Heres a thought. I have used the term Eastern whitetail on many occassions, not because I didnt know there were differant sub species of whitetail but mainly to seperate them by location from the smaller western Coues whitetail deer. So I called them eastern whitetails due to their location. To us western boys the big whitetailed deer were predominantly known to live in the eastern states, and the smaller ones (coues) lived in small pockets of the west, it wasnt to many years ago that I first heard that whitetails were migrating into montana, and other places that surprized the heck outa me. guess its kinda like saying, you have eastern boys, western boys, southern boys, northern boys, big ones, small ones, fat ones skinny ones, their all of the human race but nick named to be classified by location. Now we will just have to clarify better, eastern whitetail, canadian whitetail, western whitetail? the big ones or the little ones? texas whitetail, and now New Mexico, WOW who wooda thunk

I watched 2 guys tryuing to load a elk into the back of a brand new truck once and they had taken the tail gate off alright, but were using it as the ramp, after they bent the tailgate in two, me and a buddy went over and loaded it in for them, the old fashioned way. seen lots a guys up here on the mountain with a small winch attached to the head ache rack on their truck for loading elk, seems to work really well. Last year I took a 6x7 in the archery hunt and the wife and I loaded it in the truck, had to cut it in half, left about 10 feet of my intestine and other body parts on the ground doin it, but we got it loaded. the set up in the video is defianantly cool...Dan

Dang you guys are all young bucks, except for Bill and Lark,(he he). I was 12 when I got my first deer, I remember going over to a service station with my dad and buying the tag over the counter for $1.00, the old metal tags that once you clipped them together you couldnt get them apart, some of you may remember them. Me, My dad and brother went up toward Alpine Az. and seen a bunch of does, I picked out a buck in the bunch but my dad and brother didnt see him, and I was to young to take the shot without dad tellin me to, he didnt want me to kill a doe by mistake, the deer ran off and thats when they seen the buck, I ran up the hill after them and caught up to them and shot my first buck a 4x4 muley with an old Marlin chambered in 256 Win, kilt him on the spot.

Guess alot of the roads are closed around the state, Talk it up and let us know whats going on in your neck of the woods. Hope you all have a safe and Happy New Year........Dan

My son had a fun experience the other night I thought I would share with you all. Night before last about 2 in the morning my son and his wife were awakened by what sounded to them to be someone tapping on the outside wall of their house, they both got up and went to investigate, my son one way and his wife the other, pretty soon my daughter in law came running in to get my son telling him he needed to come check this out, outside their house was 3 bull elk, the 1 bull was eating the grass next to the house and when he would move his head his antlers would clang against the house making the noise they heard, about that time the smaller bull of the 3 ducked his head at one of the larger bulls and off they went into a wrestling match, the bigger bull pushed the smaller bull into the side of the house, making a large bang and shook the house a little, they wrestled around for a bit, tore up the garden area real good, then quit. This all happened just outside the window at what he said at times was about 2 to 3 feet away, my daughter in law tried to sneak out and get some video of them, but they heard her in the gravel and ran off, not every day you can see something like that........Dan

You guys are awesome, you have to be , you hunt!!!!.As has been mentioned before we are a brotherhood of hunters, reguardless of age, size, shape or other wise if we don't stick together to clean up one mess at a time, and fight for our freedoms,we will loose that what we dearly love. I have honestly never been to a honest to gosh (ya gotta pay) shooting range and can't identify with the problems you guys must endure.I only know how I would feel, or handle the problems you have described, and I would'nt appreciate it either...wish you all luck with that venture.......Dan

I feel bad for you guys, you should'nt have to feel like your going to get a beatin every time you go shoot.

Try any of the primos cow calls like the cow girl, hyper lips, imakadabullscrazy, even try some of the sceery calls. the more you have in your arsenal the better. I have found they are easier to use the the diaphrams but if you can use diaphrams use them for sure they work great for heard vocalization. You want to use as many calls as you can to help make you sound like a heard. The bulls will let you know what they like. It also helps to have a someone calling about 100 yards behind you to bring that bull past you for a shot. Bulls often hold up when they get to where the calls are coming from and they don't see any elk. +1 Good Sound advice here, mix em up and yes even the hochie works occasionally.

Fortunately I live in a rural area where its not to hard to find a spot to sight in a rifle and safely shoot many hundreds of yards, so I can't really feel your pain on this one, unfortunately there is an unregulated area here where a lot of folks go to shoot, the problem is most of these guys take all there trash out there and shoot it up and then dont bother to pick up after themselves, I have taken the scouts out on occasion to pick these areas up in an attemp to keep the area clean.but basically the area looks like a land fill most of the time. I can see the advantage of a good regulated area, but with that said I don't believe you fellers should have to put up with the crap and bad attitudes your talking about here, sounds like they need guys that are dedicated to the sport and enjoy what they do. I would also like to add, I have heard some comments about the older generation here and would like to say that unfortuantly weather I like it or not I fall into that class, and want you guys to know that not all of us feel or act like what has been discribed, I personally have raised boys as I know Lark and many many others on this web site have of the younger generation that are as Honest and hard working people as you can get, we have spent counless hours and money not only teaching our kids but others kids how to safely hunt and shoot, Please don't lump all of the old farts or flock shoot all of us because of a bad experience with some..............Dan
