Did your buck bleed out? How long was the recovery?

Mike and Bill, VERY nice read! Despite what my wife thinks, us hunters can be edumacated also! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and beliefs.

My brother was hunting down near Benson in Oct. My son and I were on a hill glassing east and my dad and brother were walking from the east towards us. I spotted hunters below me at 7am and watched them walk in a circle. We didnt see deer all morning and when the hunters made thier circle at 11am I stood up to strech and saw 4 deer running towards the hunters. I couldnt figure out why they were running towards the hunters. The deer realized the hunters were there and headed south towards us. I lost them in a ravine. I told my son that we were going to head back towards our truck to see if we can find the deer. We walked about 20 feet and my son said " Dad, there is a deer" I took a step back and saw a mountain lion 75 yards away! He took off and 5 min later I saw the hunters to my west take two shots, then they disappeared and I heard one more shot. My son and I meet up with the hunters about 20 min later on the road to our truck and they told me they had shot the mountain lion. They told me they didnt want it but told me where it was at. They also told me that there was 4 mountain lions above me that morning when I first saw them. I found the mountian lion, my dad went back into town to get a tag, because we figured we could keep it like any downed animal but we were wrong. I told game and Fish what happened and they told me I couldnt keep it. .............yeah, that's called poaching- on their part!

I love those "jacked up" bucks! I don't care how "dinky" they are, they're cool. Here's a friends buck that he shot a few years ago.

What a terrible thing to do!!!!!!!! C'mon Doug!

"Huge" could be 120". It could be 130"..........or maybe even 140". Amazingly enough, it still wouldn't make it the the new world record. I don't doubt your father-in-law's enthusiasm. Heck, we'd all call a buck in that range huge. There aren't too many of those typical bucks running around that fall in to those categories. But it's easy for someone to see a buck of that caliber that looks so diproportioned to anything else, or anything they've seen for that matter, and think it's probably the "new world record". I hope I didn't sound negative. I'd LOVE to see it broken. Especially if it's an AZ buck. Please post pics if you get them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It states that, "No person may take wildlife from a motor vehicle..........." Then it states that "Take, as defined by law, includes pursuing, shooting, hunting and killing wildlife. You are unlawfully using a vehicle to take wildlife if you intentionally drive around until you see the animal you wish to harvest and then make an attempt to take................" I've spent a lot of time down south and haven't had the issues above mentioned. In fact, 36A's manager is quite the opposite. He's pretty understanding. Different managers have varying views on the definitions but they all agree that they typically go after those who have had complaints against them or are under investigation for suspicious activity. Not saying they wouldn't question your average joe but let's face it, it's their job to "harass". Also, there's way too much road hunting down south anyway so it needs to be enforced. It's starting to look like northern AZ. It's only affected me during archery hunts though. It's a pretty vague law (like many of them). Only YOU know if you're "road hunting". I've found that most (NOT ALL) people who question the road hunting laws, if they were honest with themselves, are in fact, road hunters.

What is it with finding monster bucks while going to the bathroom! Reminds me of the story of a big non-typical killed several years ago. I need to drink more water while hunting! -
I think elmer meant the Velocity imparticular.

I've shot it. It's nice. A few people I've talked with don't care much for their new grip. I liked it. Something you'll need to shoot instead of take someone elses word for it.

Sorry guys, the WB can't be beat as far as functionality and convenience for our style of hunting. Wih that being said, I ALSO shoot the TT on another bow and love the fall away (although a lot of them are absolute JUNK!). Friction= nothing but a slightly slower arrow (and if set up wrong, obvious other reasons). 15fps is pretty steep. A lot steeper than any of my conclusions. The advantages far outweigh the bad. The WB is hard on cheap vanes. I don't have a problem with my WB and Pro-fletch vanes. If fall-aways were THAT much more accurate, you'd see them taking over the indoor tournaments. It's almost like saying that Hoyt is more accurate than PSE. Nathan and Chance still seem to be shooting fine. I don't mean to start an argument here. Sorry if I stepped on some toes but if people had the convenience of testing everything that's on the market, they'd find that marketing plays much more of a role in what's popular and not so much in what's better. Then there's always personal preference. In the end, there's the facts. Don't let the before mentioned cloud the latter. I've NEVER been biased towards any manufacturer and have always considered the advantages and disadvantages to every product I've had the chance to test. Once again, I shoot both. I've hunted with both. I love my TT but you can't go wrong with the WB's advantages.

It's always good to wait for next years' models. I don't know about "unbelievable". The WB is close to that. Perfect for southwestern style hunting.
-
WOW! Unreal. That's SO cool! Way to go!

I'd be all over the base. Too many good bucks with very little hunting pressure (experienced hunting pressure, anyway). There will always be the Kaibab. There won't always be the Ft.!

RR, Thanks! I read a little bit about it this morning also. Looks like Sportsman's clerks should familiarize themselves with the product before giving that kind of advice. It's a good idea to see what the outcome is though when reverting to copper jacketed bullets. I'll have a chance to do that when it's time to go to the partitions for my dad and his December cow hunt this year.
-
The other day I went to Sportsman's to buy some more ammo. I've switched over to some factory Winchester BT's and so far I like them. When the clerk saw me pick them out, he mentioned that there will be a noticable difference in accuracy if I ever switch back to a copper jacketed bullet. He said that the Lubalox coating really leaves it's residue in the barrel. Has anyone ever heard of this? From what I understand (I'm by far no expert at this), the Lubalox coating was to help reduce fouling. I'm pretty consistant with cleaning the 'ol rifle and I haven't seen a noticable difference in how long it takes or how much garbage I get out after shooting. Just a question for those who know. Thanks

Very cool! You're in for an adventure..........

This can probably be answered with a question. Can a .22 kill an elk? Yes. But probably not your best choice of weapon. I just noticed that my avatar doesn't show up anymore, any idea why?

who hunts with ballistic tip ammo?
Tines replied to AZ RANGER's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I sent this partition through the last rib of a quartering away coues buck last year. Found it lodged under the hide after it broke through the far shoulder. The bullet performed the way it was designed to. However, even after that hit, I had to shoot the buck again. I think the BT is your ideal bullet for coues deer hunting. Since then, I've gone to BT's and am very pleased with their accuracy. I've taken a couple of deer with BT's in the past but not with this caliber. We'll find out come October. I understand it's all about shot placement but we don't live in a perfect world and it's nice to have the advantage of a BT. -
My brother bought a Ruger M77 in .308 and the trigger sucks! I'm not familiar with Ruger but do they all come @ like 15lbs? Kidding, not that much, but it's heavy. Anyone set their own or does it have to go to a gunsmith?

Does anyone know of a webstie that offers spec information on factory ammunition? For example, powder used and amount, etc........? Manufacturer's sites don't offer too much. Thanks Jake

Bowhunter tries to close road with boulders on Saturday
Tines replied to bowsniper's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Some of you guys have really got your priorities out of wack! Be courteous and respectful and get over your egos! It wasn't that TwoGuns' friend had someone sitting above him (although I'm sure that wasn't what he'd hope to find opening morning), it's the fact that the first thing out of this guys' mouth is "F#$@ off........!" If you've got your salt on public land, it's first come first serve, right? Well, that's according to your interpretation of the law. Don't define the law but present the exception when it relates to YOUR hard work. This guy spent tons of time, money and effort in replenishing this DRY tank. No different then spending tons of time, money and effort into making something (a salt lick) out of nothing (no resource). This guy could have been a decent human being and called the phone number or left a reply on the note. Instead his moronic attitude came through and he thought it better to defend his actions! He knew he was in the wrong. Doesn't anyone take pride anymore in harvesting an animal through good ol' fashion, honest work? Everything's got to be handed to some of these people! Sorry for the negative post. This was a little out of character for me. Happy hunting, guys and gals! -
If you fixed the problem, great. This is what simplifies it for me. Longer cable= Decrease in draw length and weight. Shorter cable= Increase in draw length and weight. Longer string= Increase in draw length and weight. Shorter string= Decrease in draw length and weight. I'm curious as to what set-up you have. I've NEVER heard of a bow losing more than 20fps. I understand your cable may have stretched but cables don't stretch like strings. Did you chrono it with the same chrono, arrow and bow set-up? For a cable to stretch enough to lose 20fps, you're figuring DL would have in turn decreased approximately 1 1/2". That's a lot! Sorry if I made things even more complicated. Seriously, glad to hear your bow is back to factory specifications.

hunter07, No problem. I drew an October WT tag also in one of the southern units and will be in the same boat as you (as far as competing with lots of WT AND MD hunters). I can't tell you what 24A will be like but where I'll be, lots of MD and WT hang out in the same terrain/elevation. It still doesn't effect good opportunity for me. Be patient, spend LOTS of time behind the glass and have a great time! You'll do fine. I had a pretty bad experience with "hunters" last year during this hunt but it didn't stop us from being successful. Just quite irratated! I can't find success rates in your unit for the past 4 years. Is this the first time they've opened it up for an early hunt in awhile? Regardless, success during this hunt will be about 20-30% (my guess anyway) so just tell yourself this, "....all of the time I've spent in the field and observed other hunters' skills while perfecting my own, I've got to be in that 20-30%!" Good luck.

hunter07, After your post, I was curious as to what javelina hunts may affect other coues deer hunts as well. I don't even see a fall javelina hunt offered in 24A. I must be missing something....
