    Barnes TSX

One more question if you don't mind, can I get your load info for the TSX? Thanks
  2. Not sure why I'm even asking, guess it's because there are people I know who say "...it's fine, I shoot them whenever I get one and it pops it right out!" I'm no expert but my experience in bending metal bck to it's original shape usually weakens it at that point... I say throw it out.
  3. haha! Brian, you and I both! Sad eh?

    The Draw System

Doug, So, by increasing the BP "pass" %, essentially you're making it harder for those who drew the year before to draw again? I think most of us have the same idea that there needs to be some tweaking here and there..... I understand, you can't make everyone happy. I feel bad for even speaking my mind as it seems to take away from excitement of those who were successful in the draw. To those, I apologize. Not everyone's story is the same.... That being said, cherish the one you drew cause it may not be another 15 yrs until you draw it again like MANY have and are waiting......

    They are up!!

Haha!! Thanks for proving my point. Unlike "most" hunters out there, I can do without a tag every other year if it means a quality hunt will come my way. So your November hunt comment doesn't apply. Maybe you should have actually READ my post.....

    They are up!!

30-378str, Your reasoning would make sense if random people were successful in the "random" draw. But that's not the case a lot of the time. It gets old hearing the same story of "...this is my '11th' tag in '14' yrs of applying". Now, if 9 out of 11 of those were some archery cow tag then it's obvious why he's successful......not so much lucky. Those are not who I'm referencing. Yeah, I got lucky last year and drew a pretty nice deer tag with 1 BP. Except for that, I'm pretty sure "playing the odds" gave me the others. I guaruntee that if greed wasn't involved, the wealth could be spread. This is what I find ironic- those who seem to draw a rut tag every other year and say to people like me "quit whining", are the very same ones who find it a crime if they DON'T draw a tag........something so many of us are used to. It is what it is.....but I just find it hard to believe that it's as "random" as they say

  10. A few of you knew that because of our addition to the family that will be here in sept, I thought it would be wise to put in for a BP this year for elk. Because of this, and the fact that I've never wrapped a tag around an elk with my name on it, I decided to inquire about these OTC elk tags. Who better to talk to about these "limited opportunity" hunts than Lance? I've hunted with Lance for almost 6 years now and I've never known someone who just has a knack for finding animals- and in the most unorthodox places, I might add! This considered, and the fact that I've had the opportunity to help Lance out on several other "OTC" elk hunts, I was pretty confident we could get it done. Opening morning started out a little different than sunny Tucson. I'm pretty sure it was colder than that though... After we parked the truck and walked to our spot, I realized "I'm definitely not in Tucson anymore!" Although it was cold, I needed a drink as we stopped for the morning hunt. I reached down to grab my camelback line and lo and behold, frozen solid.. and that was just after the hike! Rookie SoAz hunters, I swear! Little did I know that it wasn't the only thing that was going to freeze that morning...... When Lance says "they usually come out at _____ time", I'll put money on the fact that they will. So when the elk didn't come out when he said they would, I was a little disappointed. I waited for another whole 3 minutes until one finally stepped out! I'll let it slide this time Lance. Afterall, you're getting paid big "bucks" to guide me! We watched a lone cow feed her way out and we decided to give it some time since it was still so early. After-all, who wants to drive 5 hrs just to hunt for 15 minutes? Yeah, me too! About 5 minutes later, a herd of cows stepped out and start heading right down the path Lance said they would. I thought about holding out for a bull on my opening day but as they started trotting right to us, I figured I'd be crazy to pass it up. We hit the ground and decided to let them drop into our lap. If you look closely, you can see their heads looking right at us. This was taken just after Lance stopped them and just before I took the shot... Lance told me to shoot one of the younger, yet bigger cows. Sorry Lance, I was at first but the only one to really hold still and give me the perfect shot was the lead cow. I was really pleased to see that the 110gr bullet went through one shoulder and out just behind the other. Not knowing this, as she spun, I sent another bullet through her mid-body. She went a total 15 yards and piled up.... After we finally had a chance to gather ourselves, we headed over to see my elk... It's funny, I've helped on so many other successful elk hunts but there I was standing over "just a cow" and I couldn't be more proud of her. After field dressing her, I went to take a drink finally........still frozen solid! Oh well, plenty of snow in the back of Lances truck to munch on! So, after it was all said and done, and we dropped her off at Casey's processing, what were we going to do now???? Flagstaff always has it's abundance of call-shy coyotes! Luckily Lance seems to always have a little something special to get their attention. Did I mention Lance can find animals??? That afternoon and the next morning produced some great coyote action. We shot several times, connected on a few but in general had a fantastic time. Oh yeah, remember how I mentioned that my camelback wasn't the only thing that froze? Well, apparently my scope had a little bit of moisture in it because this is what happens when you take a defective scope like that in freezing temperatures. This is looking through the objective lens. Here I thought an $800 scope was "good enough"! Oh well, that's what a warranty is for, right?? Thanks again, Lance for some more great memories.... As a side note, including my cow, Lance and Timberland Outfitters have helped take 11 elk so far with these OTC hunts. That's some cool stuff right there!

    I gotta Know..... ATV Use....

Let's be honest, it's a small world in the hunting community. I live in SoAz so I don't see this NEAR as much as you NoAz's do. But in places like RV, where everyone knows everyone, I'd like to encourage those who may know people doing this to please nock it off! We WILL lose priveleges if this continues. I don't care for confrontation much but if someone interferes directly (or indirectly) with something I love to do, we'll have words. I'd like to think I'm a pretty ethical sportsman but we ALL need to check ourselves everynow and then and not fall into bad habits.....Cause before you know it, "just this one time" will come up again and it get's easier to justify the 2nd or 3rd time

    I gotta Know..... ATV Use....

I agree, they're slugs, no doubt! I do have a question though. A while back I thought I saw somewhere that they were going to ban all vehicles going off-road- even if you're retreiving downed game. Was this directive ever passed? Lance and I were talking about this and can't find anything anywhere.....

    Baby boy names

Congratulations Scott! We're expecting our 3rd as well and my wife is ready to strangle me because I'm pretty indecisive. I'm pretty picky with names. Remember, these kids have to go through elementary and junior high so don't go naming your kid Peppersauce cause it's your favorite canyon to hunt! Forgive me if someone's already done that....... Good luck with your names and sorry I have no suggestions. You can't go wrong with Jake.. Ladies dig it!

    Help me pick a scope

+1. 300 rum is a heavy hitter, and I would doubt a $200-300 scope is going to hold up like it should. OTOH, a Zeiss 3-9x40 can be had for $325-$400(brand new at 400) Excellant scopes for the money and I sold a TON of them when I worked at Sportsmans Warehouse. +2 Optics is just as important as caliber choice. When the time comes to take a shot at a buck of a life time at extended range you want your optics to be top notch. Be patient and get a good quality scope. +1

    Need a new boot

I know that we've had these discussions on here before but I can't seem to find anything. Or my "search" skills through the site are rather poor. Regardless, I need a new pair of boots...... I currently have the Danner Pronghorns. What I love about the boot: Everything but their durability. This is my 2nd pair in a little more than 2 years. Either I'm really hard on boots or they're not quite what I'm needing. I tried my best to take care of them with all of the waterproofing and conditioning but it didn't help. I tore another lug off of these like the first pair. In addition to that, on the inside of the boot above the rubber sole, there's stitching and it's blown out. I actually think it's from side-hilling and it rubbing on rocks. Here's a few pics.... This is what I need: A boot to last me more than 2 seasons. I'm not close to being well off but I'll spend more if it means they'll last. Forgive me if you guys think I'm not doing research. I've contacted boot companies and checked out boot reviews. I figured if anyone knows what's needed for this terrain and style of hunting, it would be CWT junkies. I'm considering the Cabelas Perfekt, Ibex or Alaska Hunter by Meindl. Thanks guys! I need the following.... -Waterproof -Lightweight (for long hikes and more "stealthy" stalks. need all the help I can get!) -Durable -200-400gram Thinsulate

Quite the turnout for the Perfekt Hunters. May have to take a trip to Cabelas and check them out. Thanks for the input guys...

    Need a new boot

Thanks guys! I see that the non-insulated pair only come in medium widths. I need wide in most boots. I'll need to try on a pair somehow. Thanks again....
