Finally a story of someone shooting a great buck after some serious HARD WORK! Way to go man!
-
One of the most exciting hunts I've ever been on! I've been hunting with Lance for awhile now. He's a pretty soft-spoken dude. But let me tell you, when he comes across PIGS, like the drop-tine buck, he's about as animated as Tigger on a trampolene! I KNEW that this buck was "worthy" after Lance's explanation of him being, "ummm, uhhh, a NO BRAINER!!". After helping out with Ernie's buck and finding out that Lance and Marc got the drop-tine buck, my dad and I went to help with the pack out. What a magical moment when walking up to that buck. I know TLO takes pride in their pictures but let me tell you, although they're great, they don't do him justice. Just an awesome buck to put your hands on!!! That being said, a funny story about the buck my dad gave a hair cut. We were waiting for the buck to stand up. My dad behind the rifle with the bipod out and 4 of us behind binos and tripods waiting VERY patiently as you can imagine...... FINALLY, he stands! I'll bet our heart rates went from 60 to 120 in about 2 seconds! He steps to the left and we stop him. Our heads were about to explode and the binos started to bounce with every beat. I'm sure my dad was the calmest one. No doubt it probably sounded like 5 toddlers who just stumbled upon a drum-set! If stuff like that doesn't get you excited, you're missing out! Can't wait to do it again next year.......

That is too cool! Congratulations guys!

Why so angry???? You can't argue which one has better terminal ballistics. We'll leave it at that. And you also can't assume that those who shoot LR aren't capable of closing the distance. MANY LR shooters are archery hunters as well and find themselves within "bow range" every year. In a perfect world, we'd all stalk in within 100 yards like you and your brother and whack 110" bucks. BUT, unfortunately there are much more variables to consider. Be careful calling people lazy who shoot beyond your abilities. Just because someone took a 500yd shot doesn't mean he's lazy. How do you know that he didn't just pack in 5 miles and spend 10days in a spike camp, hunting his butt off for a buck of a lifetime......which finally presents himself on the other side of a mean canyon? Boy does it feel good knowing that you've got all of the right equipment to make it come together. As mentioned before, shoot what's comfortable for you and what you're most accurate with- all the while considering YOUR limitations AND the calibers limitations. Many people out there shoot magnum rounds at these "tiny" critters NOT because the round strokes their ego, but because it far exceeds expectations of effectiveness. After-all, that's what we're trying to achieve, right? I drive a Toyota Tacoma. Although that little V-6 does a pretty good job with what I use it for, it sure would be nice to put a couple more friends in the cab and pull a trailer. Is that the exception to YOUR analogy? Possibly..... But I will say this. Many people out there find LR shooters/hunters to be an egotystical pile of lazy hunter-trash, but it's largely due to ignorance on their part. Most, not all, who argue that the .243 is just as capable of the .284 in effectiveness, will always back themselves up with "it's all about shot placement!" Never did a statement make more sense, right? But by using that, you'd ALSO have to agree that if I'm capable of shooting 1/2 of your group at TWICE the distance, I must be more prepared, right?????? Shoot whatever you want, but be disciplined enough to make the right decision when the opportunity arises. THAT'S the right answer to his question....

Nice work, Joe! Awesome!!!

As Lance would put it, "Well, there you go!" Too cool, man!

Looks great guys! But I lose a lot of things in the field. That's got "lost" written all over it for me. On a good note, I lost a skinning knife back in 07 while skinning a bull. This year, while in the same unit, lo and behold, it was still there! Now if I could only find my GPS lost during that same hunt!

Awesome job..... but I've got to ask, "WHY SO SERIOUS????"

You're too kind, Kurt. Nobody (but you) wanted you to fill that tag more than me! It was a pleasure being in the field with you and I'm so glad that our game plans worked out. As mentioned in other threads, the rut was a little "wierd" this year so adapting was a must! We did just that and definitely had some fun.... I'd also like to mention/thank Steven Ward (Wards Outfitters) for contacted me in helping Kurt out. I think some of the demise of the "guiding" world out there is that sometimes egos get involved and EVERYONE else is only competition. More often than not, that's far from the case and it was refreshing to see another outfitter was on the same page as TLO. I was very glad that I could provide the time to Kurt and end on a "somewhat" happy note. And more than anything, I'd like to thank the wife who let me help Kurt out with a 5 1/2yr old, 3 1/2yr old and a 2week old at home! Man I've got a good woman!!!

Keep at it! It'll pay off

Nice cats, Daryl! That's a cute one with your little girl.....

Anyone have experience/knowledge with this tripod? Thanks

Pretty sure it's 48hrs prior to ANY hunt going on in the unit you'll be flying.......might be wrong though.

"NV Hunter, or anyone considering booking a hunt with Timberland Outfitters. I can say these guys are great, very honest individuals that do what they say and are very enjoyable to be around. I have had great hunting experiences with them in the past and wouldn’t change a thing about them or the hunt. I live in Indiana and they are currently advising me on the best places to put in for all my AZ hunts and I can’t wait to get back out there and hunt with them. I took my first coues deer with TLO and also shot my first javelina with my bow. Ben 812-483-6418 Here's my coues deer. This was an October hunt and what a fun time it was! Here's my archery javelina to boot! "

nvhunter, "Hi. My name is TJ and I have hunted with Jake from TLO for the past two December hunts. He was a great guide and knew the area very well. While on both hunts Jake put us on many different whitetail and more 'wall hangers' than I have seen in a number of years. Jake was extremely prepared for the terrain, conditions and challenges that couse whitetail use to elude a hunter. He had great optics, rifle (if needed) and physical conditioning needed for reaching the amazing grey ghosts. I hear that they are pretty good on an elk hunt too. If I ever get a tag I will let you know how they do! I highly recommend Jake and TLO. You will not be disappointed. TJ 520-349-7248"

nvhunter, Thanks for your inquiry. Lance is out of town for a week on some archery hunts so I thought I'd get a hold of a few of Timberland Outfitters' hunters and have them post something for you. They should have some information for you shortly. Unfortunately a couple of them aren't members of the site and it takes a little bit to become one. I'll post their resonse emailed to me as soon as I get them. Congratulations on your tag! Looking forward to hearing from you and if you have any questions, feel free to give me a call...... Wasn't sure which thread to put this under but I have a question about a quad I just purchased. It's a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400. The guy didn't have the manual and I plan on ordering one but thought I'd ask this question to anyone who might know. I changed all of the fluids. Local bike shop said 4oz of gear oil in the front and 5oz in the rear. I put 4oz in the front, went to the rear, put 5oz in there and checked the dipstick....nothing on the stick. Also, there's no way to check the front. Anyway, I put another ounce in and still nothing. I called local bike shop and they said, "okay, just keeping adding it until it shows up on the stick." hmmmmmm okay... I ended up putting about 2/3qt in the rear-end(which is also for the transmission) until it read "safe" on the dipstick. I thought that 5oz sounded like very little but anyway...... Anyone own a like quad and might have info on how I know FOR SURE how much....especially in the front-end where I can't check? Thanks in advance Jake

That's funny. When I was in elementary school and waiting for the bus one morning to pick me up at the bus stop, I watched a UPS truck pull over onto the side of the road and drop a box into an irrigation ditch. I lived on a farm. Then about 5 minutes later I watched another gentelman in a truck pull over and pick it up. Always wondered about that day....
