4th Annual Flagstaff Area CWT.com Get Together!!
Tines replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
One more thing, I also think that moving it to the wknd before interferes with his Buffalo hunts. And he'll have plenty of pictures to share with you all in regards to that critter this year!! -

Inverter Broadhead test #2 Cinder Block
Tines replied to wardsoutfitters's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Not many heads would withstand the tests you've conducted. Can't deny that. I'd shoot an elk with them...... maybe I will if I ever draw a tag! Hope it's a big seller for ya! -
Everyone knows that the 3 footed lion hangs with the 3-toed sloth.......

All credit to Andy and his dogs, guys. 2 1/2 yrs ago I met Andy and he's been nothing but reliable and consistent in everything from hunting to just plain being a friend. Just a few days ago he spent all day on my sisters roof with me while we finished re-roofing her house. And just like Andy fashion, he wouldn't take anything in return. That's hard to come by these days. I also don't know of a person more dedicated to perfecting the skill of being a houndsman than Andy, and this was just an example of his hard work finally paying off. I was just the lucky one who got to tag along. This was an incredible experience. I couldn't believe how high up that lion went! I was just a few feet from the base of the tree and I ranged straight up and got 22 yards. That's 66 feet! "Luckily" the canyon was so steep on each side that I could get a decent angle at him. This was my view of the shot I took. I had to tuck the arrow in-between his arm and the branch. On a side note, some of you might remember how Andy almost killed me on my WT hunt last year, right? Well, how naive would I be to think that nothing would happen on this hunt? As I was trying to get up the canyon as fast as possible, and using my hands to climb up some rocks, I put my hand literally about 8 inches from a rattlesnake! If hearing the dogs weren't motivation enough, those rattles gave me quite the adrenaline boost. To top it off, a few hundred yards later, as I grabbed a hold of a branch to break it off and push through the brush, it snapped right at my hand and came back and hit me right in the side of the face!! No kidding, I saw stars and my bell was RINGING! It was about the diameter of a baseball bat handle. You can see the battle wound to the side of my face. I haven't been hit that hard since high school and fighting was "cool". Thanks again, Andy! One more thing. I checked him in with Jim Heffelfinger today and he aged the lion at 8-10yrs old (but probably closer to the 9-10yr mark based on other wearing). Wow!

Not sure if you heard this clip but Arnold in California seems to think it is funny, here is one of his quotes. "I was also going to give a graduation speech in Arizona this weekend. But with my accent, I was afraid they would try to deport me," the Republican governor joked in his speech at Emory University. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20004676-503544.html Arnold, if you would wake up, this is no joke......and it ain't funny..... Seriously, as if voting Arnold in as Governor wasn't a joke already!

You're right, lets roll over and wait for someone else to come up with a better plan. Especially since it will cost us more money. Maybe if the feds actually reimbursed the state of AZ to begin with due to illegal immigration (which is their end of the deal), we'd get money that could off-set some of the costs. Maybe if we stopped all of the benefits going towards those who are in this country illegally, THAT would off-set some of the costs. To tell me that we DON'T have the money to incarcerate them but we have the money to give them free health-care, housing and food is RIDICULOUS!!!! Pennies on the dollar, my friend. And don't think for one second that even if employers try to go about it the right way, illegals haven't figured out a way around that. It's called Identity Theft. On a side-note, good thing that theres nothing stating in the U.S. Constitution that the government will protect each state within the union from an invasion. Otherwise we might have a legit law-suit towards them......wait, it IS there, and they've labeled those invading AZ "non-hostile". Haha! Go ask the Krentz' family how "non-hostile" they are.

I was talking to Andy the other day about your avatar because I saw the preview to the movie. What was it called again?

How Mexico treats illegal aliens

I don't believe any of you who say that G&F personnel aren't on the same page....no way..

Have any of you seen the new "Chicken Little" movie? The sky actually WAS falling......... just a thought. It's a pretty funny movie too! Also, many of you have mentioned that there are plenty of places here in the good 'ol USA that are worse than Mexico. Here's the MAIN difference between the two: When I dial 911, someone's coming....... for now, anyway. That brings a little piece to my mind even when I'm stuck on the south-side of Tucson. I've spent a lot of time in Mexico and haven't had any issues either. That doesn't mean the dial on my "vulnerability scale" isn't reading RED! One more thing. Be careful where your motivation lies when telling people how "safe" Mexico is. Could it be that money is involved some way or another? And that's not implying anything illegal either.....

I shot a cow at 50yrds with a 25-06 110gr Accubond. She went 10yrds and piled up. Obviously there's better calibers for elk but depending on the circumstances, I wouldn't hesitate in your choice of caliber or bullet. Good Luck!

How long has it been since you been drawn for bull elk
Tines replied to joeybari's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Most people who like the system are the same ones who benefit from it year-after-year (not all, of course). That being said, I don't see how going to a waiting period could make things worse? Couple positives to a change: -G&F still gets ALL of their money. -It provides a better chance (even if minimal) to those of us waiting for a "premium" tag. -Oh yeah, did I mention G&F still gets their revenue??? I've reaped the benefits of our current system (not for elk, though). Even then, I'm all about a waiting period! Yes, its MY CHOICE to apply for difficult hunts to draw. But it is for my neighbor down the street as well who raked in his 4th or 5th archery bull tag in a row for a premium unit again this year. Guess his two 380+ bulls in a row weren't "enough". Once again, most who don't want the system to change are those who either reap the benefits of it or feel they're entitled a permit based on past success. Neither a reasonable thought process, imo..... Waaahhhh!!!! -
How long has it been since you been drawn for bull elk
Tines replied to joeybari's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
....never....15yrs -
Something tells me that I could gather a handful of people from this site and the draw would go pretty efficiently. Common sense goes a long ways, folks. And it seems that so much of the "pre-requisites" for jobs aren't considering that!

Oh the memories. I used to fill soda cans full of gasoline, light them on fire, stand back 20 yards or so and shoot them with a shotgun. It was cool to see anything explode when you were 8. I'm sure we can all look back on our childhood and agree that there HAD to have been some sort of divine intervention.....otherwise.

This cargo box was on the quad when I purchased it a year ago. It's worked great and someone would be really happy with it. It especially worked well with keeping kids/riders tucked in behind you. These aren't cheap and the cheapest one I found on EBAY (before shipping, of course) was $220. Obviously it's used but it's in fine shape. Keeps all of your gear dry and secure with slots for a lock if you'd like. I'll let it go for $125. I'm also heading up through to PHX on Saturday (the 13th) and Flagstaff on Monday (the 15th) so it can be "delivered" if someone can meet me at a reasonable spot. I'm located in Tucson for all of you locals... Thanks guys!

I thought I remembered not much of a difference in the amount of applicants when they switched back to the paper apps. But as far as the "non-die-hards" NOT applying if their CC is charged up front? I don't think people will think twice about that. There are two types of CC holders: Those who use them wisely and those who don't. Either one, the up-front charge means nothing.....

+1 for the 110 Accubond. I've watched quite a few animals including elk, coues and mule deer get flat-out DUMPED by that round! At pretty good distances too.... The 115 BTs shot well for me too. I just didn't shoot anything but coyotes with them because the 110s flew a tad better and I liked the idea of a tougher bullet. Casey, I'm no expert but I was under the impression that the BT's were constructed different/better than the Bsilvertips. I understand the coating difference but I thought I remember reading they held together a little better. I could be wrong though. Good luck with your choice of bullet...

Hey Jim, thanks for the insight. Curious what direction the G&F leans on the subject- I realize the odds of rolling up on a Hybrid are rare and most of us won't have to worry about seeing one, let alone killing one in our life time. With that said, your statement on not shooting a buck that looks "funny", and a prior statement in this thread about a WM would have taken it had it been a whitetail hunt caught me off guard. Can animal identification and a subsequent game law infraction really come down to DNA and gland location when general characteristics show differently? There certainly are funny looking critters running around out there, all shapes and sizes, but the very trademark that gave the whitetail its name cant be overlooked can it? I've seen some big eared, mule headed, fork antlered whitetail and some dainty, basket racked, ninja skilled mule deer but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a mule deer "flag". Reminds me of the Polar/grizzly bear hybrid a few years ago- that dude jumped through way too many hoops for something that seemed obvious on a common sense level. Mother nature does what she does and much as we'd like to think we can control her, we can't. things happen...Look at the platypus . Any unit with a sustainable population of both species has the potential to pitch a hybrid and some day one lucky hunter's dream buck has the potential of becoming a nightmare because its metatarsal gland is too big, small, high or low. Dave Good point. All I know is that if I had a WT tag and an obvious white tail presented itself, I wouldn't care if his head gear looked as if he just walked off of the strip, lead is flying!
