Seriously, you noticed a water bottle in the guys crotch while he's holding THAT rack?!?! -
'bout time! Congrats again!!

I respect that. But I was never convinced that it was EITHER based on what I observed. Maybe I need to spend more time in the woods . I also never planned on shooting the buck based on his "mannerisms", for sure. Just an observation that obviously made a big impression on me. I only stated that because I've never seen a Mule Deer act/look the way he did. But obviously that means nothing because I posted a picture of his outward appearance. And why do most of us pull the trigger when we've got an "Antlered Whitetail" deer tag anyway? Because it "looks" like a WT, right? And that includes EVERYTHING about the animal.....especially a tail. But how often do experienced hunters need to look at the tail to determine whether they're legal or not? I'd say less than 1%. If a buck has no tail, we have to look at other traits, right? And even after considering ALL of those traits of this buck, would I wrap a Coues deer tag around it? Nope....

I think 308nut hit it on the head. And also to those who suggested Coues deer being a much more popular animal to hunt. The "stretching the tape" theory is harder for me to swallow. Does it happen? Sure it does. But few and far between when a 120+ buck hits the dirt. And honestly, who throws out the Net score of an antlered animal these days anyway? Funny how most people will agree that an animal deserves all of the inches that he grew until another 130" buck is killed with 20" of trash hanging. Like ANY of us would call it a 110" buck..... I've come to terms with it, guys, I shot a dink last year......

How do you get the deer blood smell out of your backpack?

It'll go away eventually. That's how I get it to go away -

Congrats on the lion and especially to Tina and her great buck! -
Use a shirt or something to throw over your head and part of the binos. It helps a lot.

I'd consider myself non-confrontational as well but my fuse is a tad short too. Sometimes people just need to be "educated" and they're not screwing up your hunt intentionally. Most guys, unfortunately, know exactly what they're doing....

ARCHERY mule deer help in Arizona for a non res
Tines replied to JimmyHat's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Not sure what part of NM you're in but there's no need to drive to Central AZ in December to hunt desert MD on public land. There's PLENTY of country in South/Southeastern AZ with deer to hunt and access. Unless you're completely against the border units, the 36's always have plenty of MD to chase. -
Way to go, Amanda!

haha! Why are people sorry???

Neither one of us thought twice about shooting the buck. And it had nothing to do with whether it was a young MD or not, just too small. As for antler configuration, my buddy and I didn't pay much attention to what they "looked" like, other than it was small. Our impressions were made off of the boney structure of it's face, size of ears, white ring around the nose, small throat patch, white rump and tiny tail. More than anything, we were amazed at the way this buck moved through the trees while watching us. Looked NOTHING like a MD. His mannerisms and movements were all WT to us. Either way, other than an any antlered tag, legally, how can you shoot this buck? Thanks for your reply's, guys

The hunt was a bust. In 4 days of hunting we glassed up 4 bucks. All small (including this one). We did glass up 3 bears though. Maybe we should have gone into Silver City and bought a bear tag. Overall, pretty disappointed in what NM calls their "premium" Coues deer hunt. As far as I'm concerned, I can find MUCH more and bigger deer in a leftover unit in AZ. We ran into a few hunters who were successful in the unit but nothing much bigger than what we passed. Like anywhere, there's probably some monsters in there but the New Mexicans can have the Burro Mountains......

That's a great buck, man! Sounds like you were on a much bigger buck and maybe there's next year. But there's NO reason to be slightly ashamed of 103". That's a stud of a buck! I realize that anymore it seems that 100" bucks are the new 85" buck. Especially since I just had a picture sent to me of a 158" AZ buck. Not sure if that's the case but it sure seems legit. Thanks for sharing your success and congrats again on a great buck.

Very cool, Doug! I think you shot my buck's brother in Wyoming!
-
Just stick to your game plan, regardless of what unit you're hunting and you should be successful. And yes, 33 is over-hunted.

Now THAT sounds like a great time! I'll definitely look into it..... Here's my buddy Luke's buck that I helped him with.

Holy points! Very nice and congrats to your dad!

A guide once told me that "gear doesn't put diapers on my kids or food on my table, I'd prefer cash." No, I wasn't being guided by this person but I appreciated his comments. That said, gear might go further than cash for some.

Congrats, Nick! Way to go!
