SPOT - (Not the dog)

+1 with what Amanda said. Mine has worked wherever I've gone. Plenty of places without cell signal. I don't have the Assist so I don't know anything about it.

Rattlesnake Bite

A couple of yrs ago I almost placed my hand on a black-tailed rattlesnake as I was coming up the bottom of a canyon to reach a treed lion. After I shot the lion and hiked out my buddy hiked back in there the next day and he almost stepped on the snake in the same spot. Crazy how small their range is! How do you stay calm when you know you just got bit and have some ground to cover, you ask? Naturally an event like this is going to get someone pretty excited. But the key is to keep your heart rate relatively slow and senses together. We all know ways to increase or decrease our heart rate. Move steady as opposed to sloppy, you know? Getting too worked up will just dull your senses and make you look silly. Ha! I've been on a few rattlesnake bites and granted none were in a wilderness area, most were able manage the pain and their composure to help the situation. This might sound insensitive but most "emergencies" are the overreaction of an "inexperienced" victim. Our bodies are super resilient. some pretty basic understandings of a scenario should help increase our likelihood of overcoming.

Rattlesnake Bite

Good point about the epi-pen. Most people will have an allergic reaction to the antivenin though. But that's in a controlled environment so it's almost a moot point.

Rattlesnake Bite

Just to clarify. In your scenario of being "2hrs from civilization" and you've made it to your truck, I'd say you're fine. Get help ASAP but understand that there are FAR worse accidents that take place in the field. More people die from wasp and bee stings than they ever do from snake bites.

Rattlesnake Bite

The good news is much of predominant rattlesnake country consists of decent cell phone coverage. At the very least, most places will allow a text message to get out for help. I invested in the SPOT for reasons similar to this. Especially if you find yourself hunting alone often like myself. If you go this route, make sure you purchase the insurance that goes with the plan where if you were to use it, it helps cover the serious expense of a "rescue". The other good news, rattlesnake bites are rarely lethal. Obviously the antivenin plays a factor in this but the snakes venom takes several hours to reach its effect anyway. You'll experience tissue damage LONG before death. The BEST thing you could do is have insurance because the antivenin is ridiculously expensive. And they always want to give several treatments. But if you're out in the field, this is what I'd do: -Stay calm and move the affected limb as little as possible. This is where splinting helps. -Remove anything restrictive (watches, bands, or whatever) because swelling will occur around the site. -If you must move, give yourself to some time to relax and calm down. It should help in localizing the venom and discouraging blood flow around the site (more blood flow = more tissue damage). -I'd probably clean it off as quickly as possible to reduce the chances of infection. This is what I would NOT do: -tourniquet (you'll do more harm than good. It's typically LOCAL tissue damage that occurs. I'd rather have a jacked up scar on my calf than a prosthetic limb from the knee down because I restricted blood flow to my foot). -cut and suck (it's already injected into your tissue. This is like trying to cut and suck the medication just put into your arm by a syringe. Silly.) Finally, I honestly don't think I'd kill the snake. If it were in my back yard, I'd definitely make a nice skin out of him. But out in the middle of nowhere? What good did that do?? Guess I'm a hippie when it comes to this.

Round 2

"99% of all Obama haters is because he is a little too brown...."???? What a completely ignorant and asinine statement. Almost doesn't deserve THIS response.
8. Richard made a great shot, as you'll see in the video. Here's a few clips I threw together for everyone to see. Congrats again, Richard!!!! Enjoy! PS. You can see the shot much better in HD..

7E Peaks

Careful, that's not within "The Peaks hunt" boundaries.
11. A huge congrats to Ryan Owens on taking this amazing bull! It's been quite the roller coaster ride for everyone involved and from what I hear, there couldn't be a more deserving hunter. Now THAT'S refreshing! I wasn't there so I'll share what details I know but I got the information from Ryan Sandal who helped Ryan take the bull today. Ryan shot this bull in his bed at 60yds. The bull was quartering away and he put a perfectly placed arrow through his vitals. The bull didn't go far at all and a short time later, Ryan and everyone involved were standing over this goliath of a bull. That's the very condensed version. There was much celebration and tears throughout the journey. A short history (from what I recall) of this bull that Lance named "LAB". For at least 4 years, TLO and TLO guide Ryan Sandal have been watching LAB grow old......and big....then REALLY BIG! "LAB" stood for "leans a bit". There's more history with why he chose THAT specific name but I'll save that for Lance. 4 years and many pictures and video later, someone can finally put their hands on him. UNOFFICIALLY, he's 435 1/8" gross and 414 5/8" net. Regardless of that, or how many inches he will officially score, Ryan seems to be one of the most deserving and humble hunters you'd ever meet. As you get the entire story, you'll see why. Those few that need to be congratulated are Ryan Owens, of course, Ryan Sandal and Lance Crowther. And a huge honor it is to everyone involved to experience such an amazing animal on the hoof and in their hands. Enjoy!
12. More videos will be posted soon!! Hope you enjoy this over-the-counter archery hunt.....
13. Here's a little video I threw together for Debbie and her great buck. Enjoy...
14. Some of you might know or recognize Richard from the Antelope forum. Richard's had quite the season so far. If you haven't seen the buck he shot this year, go check it out. 87"+ Stud! http://www.coueswhit...ichard-sprague/ Richard was also lucky enough to draw an archery bull tag this year. Lance and Richard stalked into 40yds to this bull yesterday evening and Richard made a great shot. This super heavy bull with 62" of mass will look great in his shop next to his B&C Antelope buck. Congratulations, Richard!

The last two are a couple of weeks ago. Here's also a short video clip of LAB from 4 yrs ago standing next to Tilt. LAB's on the right, obviously. Sorry for the poor quality. We're having a difficult time finding the original footage. We'll get it up asap.

Wow!

Yup, they got killed. All you sundevil fans can sleep better. And nothing anyone says will sound like anything but an excuse. But I'll give them to you anyway. To many, the final score represented an inferior team in AZ that was "overrated". To anyone who actually watched the game and honestly critiqued it, it might BETTER be an eye-opener on who's now the #2 team in the polls and what they DIDN'T do. If you or Oregon thinks that the Ducks are the #2 team in the nation based on THAT victory, you're all in for a rude awakening. Like the commentator mentioned in the 3rd quarter, the score wasn't a good representation of the game up until that point. If an "overrrated" AZ team can march into the red-zone that many times (as POORLY as Scott and some others played and regardless of capitalizing or not) then what's an Oregon team going to do with USC, Oregon State, UCLA? Not to mention any powerhouse in the south?? If they think they'll stay #2 based on what happened last night then like AZLance states, "I'm sure they'll take some ocean front property in AZ.." too! Honestly, the score should have been 149-0! Give me a healthy Matt Scott and that's a different ball-game my friend....
17. Who would have thought that in America, in the 21st century, being a Mormon and successful businessman is reason enough to NOT get a vote. Ignorant and embarrassing.

GIANT bull down!!

Just wanted to let you all know that I added a short video clip of LAB and Tilt from 4 yrs ago. It's combined with all of the pictures in the first post. Thanks!

AMAZING bull! Big congrats!

GIANT bull down!!

Ha! If I remember correctly, it was in reference to a couple of things. His right sword leaned in "a bit". But it also has to do with his daddy "Tilt". One would "lean" and the other would "tilt", for one reason or another. I'll try and upload a really poor quality of both of them standing side by side. Thanks for all the comments, guys. I'm sure Ryan's smile won't leave for a long time...if ever.

I'll never understand how this can be the first thought/question on someone's mind before a congratulations to the hunter.

Giant bull DOWN!!

Ha! It took me several times looking at that picture to realize there was a dog there. Guess the giant bull was distracting. You're a true dog lover Tj. ; )
