After chasing bugles deep into the timber, we finally got within striking distance. Finally getting situated in the only semi-open spot we could find, I let out a couple soft mews. The forest erupted with bugles from the three bulls we had been following. Two of the bulls split as the most aggressive bull turned and came charging in!

We ran into Capt Hook the first week of the archery elk season while hunting with Tom. He is a cool looking bull with beams that curl down hard after the fifth point. Fortunately for him, a tree occupied his attention just long enough for our wind to shift in his direction. Ten more yards and he would have caught an arrow!

After sneaking in close while this bull was raking a tree, we set up and gave a few cow calls. He finally came out of the juniper jungle he was in and revealed himself. Although not what we were looking for, he still got the blood pumping being only 10 yards away!

I thought we had found a "shooter" until upon further review we realized he was without a fifth point on his left side. Maybe next year....

Found these two bulls "feelin' out" the competition" early in the elk season.

Ya, right place at the right time. He walked just passed us at 20 yards before he got our wind. Here is a clip of him from 2 years ago. -
We filmed this bull two years ago and he was sporting a couple of kickers and some awesome mass. Didn't see him last year, but his unique rack gave him away today. What a cool looking bull when he is looking at you head on!

The bull in the middle at the 25 second mark I was estimating in the 350-360 range. Never gave much thought to judging the first bull. Not quite the class of bull we are looking for.

Had a good day out scouting for bulls today. Found one pretty nice bull and got to witness two mature bulls in a boxing match!

Jeremiah and I decided to head to more open country and see if we could glass up any good elk or deer. The bulls were in abundance! Thanks to Shane Koury for lending me his spotting scope/video camera kit. We were able to film the biggest bulls at almost three miles away!

Ran into some great bulls while scouting July 26th. Unfortunately the unstable winds betrayed me and the two biggest bulls hit the trees before it was light enough to film. I was able to burn a little footage of a bull I called flat front through the spotting scope. Once he got to the aspens I snuck a little closer and got a minute of footage with the big camera. I love the way he looks head on with the big swooping thirds! Both he and the other decent bull with him are young, but showing some good potential for the future!

Video of a nice Bull I found while out scouting with my friend Jeremiah. This bull is sporting a pretty good kicker off his left beam where the G4 comes off.

Here is another I just got back from filming this morning.

This Bull looks to be the "Babe Ruth" of elk with the big ol' Luisville Slugger he has hanging off his left antler! His body is absolutley giant! Thanks to my friend, Jeff Lester from Hunt Hard Outfitters for sharing the footage with us.

I had luck on my side while out scouting for elk this morning! I was able to get some really cool shots when a couple of the bulls got silhouetted in the golden morning sun.

I took my first trip of the year to a spot I refer to as "the elk factory". The spot lived up to its name. I saw one of the largest groups of velvet bulls I have ever personally seen. There were several 6 points already and a few bulls that showed some potential to be shooters.

I had the privilege of accompanying Bob when he took his first elk last year. He was 72 years old and had not had a successful elk hunt to this point. After his nephew Joe tagged out, I set out with Bob to find a shooter. That first evening I spent glassing some open country known for feeding lots of bulls. Just as I had anticipated, several bulls began pushing their harems out of the trees just before dark. There was one bull that stood out with a very unique shape to his rack. The bulls frame was kinda narrow, but he had some good tine length and thirds that shot straight out before curling up. The plan was to get there early enough in the morning to catch them on their way back into the trees. Our slow but steady approach in the dark proved just fast enough as we were able to get in front of the last group of elk to leave the meadow. As luck would have it, it was the same bull I had glassed the night before. If you watch closely, you can see blood erupt from the first wound mid body as the second round makes impact in the lower neck. Many thanks to Carl Bryant for capturing it all on film! This broken bull's dreams are crushed when he loses his lone hot cow to "coyote ugly".

Who all is going to the Sunrise 3D Shootout? Gotta be one of the best 3D Shoots out there. Plus every registered shooter gets a chance to win a Trophy bull elk hunt on the White Mtn. Apache Res!

Video of a group of bulls I found today after a long mountain bike ride with my wife. Some of these bulls are looking pretty good with plenty of time to grow!
