    Sarah and the Swede

Hello , first of all congrats on a job well done, i'ts awesome to see a family do things together as well. I have a Carl Gustaf 6.5x55 swedish that I was thinking of turning into a hunting rifle for my kids to shoot with. I guess you can hunt deer with that caliber , cause a lot of people have been telling me that it's too "light" of a round and not flat shooting enough. But looks like u guys proved them wrong, Thanks .

Hello I hunted 36a Nov 4-10 and every time I saw deer. Twice i jumped a bedded whitetail buck in the same pile of rocks around the same time ( Friday and Wednesday).I usually hunt of off Ocotillo Ranch Rd.entrance.Which put me north of the McGee settlement and just south of the power lines on the Navarro ranch.I hunted a little lower than most would like for coues but I've taken two deer from the same area and seen many deer taken from the same general area (2009 and 2011).The roads are easily accesible with little four wheel drive action needed.Like people say, find a high spot and glass or maybe you just have to "hoof it" and bust some draws, canyons and ravines. A buddy of mine hunted of off Arivaca rd. and had no success.I don't know if you are familiar with that entrance but just in case you can take Mission Rd. south to Ocotillo Ranch Rd. and stay on the paved road till it ends. Then make a left on the dirt road and follow it till you see the sign that tells you to access state trust land or gate.Once at the gate I usually go right on the power line service road and find a road that takes you where you want to go cause there are many roads there. Good luck and I hope some people don't get upset about this info cause somebody may see it as "e-scouting". The way I see it is,the more hunters there are the more support we will have to insure we continue to have the Right to Hunt.

300 win mag or 300 wsm?!?

Go with a .270 it works great on everything. Just match the bullet type and grains and you can also find it anywhere, it comes in so many colors and flavors. Or the good ol' trusty 30-06, even my great grand pa' knows about the 30-06. But the best thing you can do with any firearm is get to know it and know it real good. I have seen people shoot an old rifle been held together with wire and lubed up with cooking oil and they can put the bullet where they put their eye, all cause they have shot their rifle so much they know it better than their wife.

    Which camo would you choose?

I usually hunt with mossy oak brush on coyote hunts and seems to work good for our dry area and also with Marine Corp digital camo (tan) it also blends real good. I sometimes mix my pants and top depending on vegetation. For example in summer/ spring i wear tan camo pants ( grasses/ bushes)and a woodland or realtree hardwoods (treetops in full foliage)top and in fall/ winter all tan (most everything is dry or dormant). I also pay attention to the head wear to make sure it matches my top. Except for quail hunting I wear brown pants with a heavy canvas layer built into it in cold weather and a heavy cotton long sleeve shirt in tan and in warm weather brown jeans with brown snake chaps and a light tan long sleeve shirt. I was told to try to match the vegetation or terrain to your camo to increase your odds. And sorry but I have never seen anything naturally blue out hunting. Even my rifle has been painted coyote tan since there are no black things in the wild.GOOD HUNTIN' and GOOD TIMES

    Randey's Story as Promised!

COOL, COOL,COOL !! I actually enjoy reading these stories way more than watching those fancy hunting shows on T.V. This is what most of us experience and we can relate to these stories and especially when they are written with such detail it makes me feel like i am right there alongside. GOOD JOB and CONGRATS!!

Unit 36A Lets do our part

I talked to the cowhands again (36a) and they told me that they know of three different Mountain Lions and a couple of "feral" dog packs out there. Some people are dumping their dogs out there and they are forming packs and causing havoc. They usually hang out just north of the McGee settlement and south of the power lines. They think the lions come down at night around water holes and large dry arroyos and move back up in the morning. They told me to be careful with the drug runners up in the mountains (NW) part of the Sierrita's especially after dark. They are armed and will shoot with out question, cause they don't want somebody to contact BP, and there is an ongoing battle between them and the "bajadores" or border bandits. They have been knocking their fences down to cross unobstructed through the desert. I don't want to scare people but be careful. As far as the genetics part ,I guess most hunters have been trying to take the bigger bucks since hunting became a sport rather than a means of survival, and there are still big deer out there. So GOOD HUNTIN' and GOOD TIMES.
  9. Just harvested a spike buck today. Jumped a 3x2 on Friday no shot possible, and a fork today, missed the fork @ about 250 yards he was running.I wasn't able to hunt Saturday,Sunday,Monday or Tuesday. Decided to take the first buck I saw cause time is running out and won't be able to go out on Thursday .After I carried my buck back to my truck, two of the ranch hands that work for the Navarro Ranch came up to where I was.We started talking about hunting and all of the illegal activities taking place in their ranch. I gave them a rear hind quarter from my deer, which they gladly accepted. They told me it was the first time anybody offered to share some deer meat with them. I did it cause we are guests in their Ranch and would hate to lose access into their property. They were telling me that last year they ran into two hunters that had discarded the whole body of the deer they shot and were only after the antlers.I believe that actions like that give hunters a bad name. They also mentioned that they need help controlling the mountain lion and coyote population, cause they are killing their cattle. I hunt the area off of Ocotillo Ranch Rd. So please lets give these guys a hand and not abuse the privilege of being allowed access on their ranch. If we shot all the big ones and leave all the small ones eventually we will end up with forks and spikes (genetics). I suggest we take a small deer every once in a while, they all taste the same.
