What unit for the first time AZ Coues hunter?
Jason replied to a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Hey Larry, Another option is to become a member of the Huntin Fool Magazine. It is designed for out of state hunters applying for other states in the West. It goes over all the Western States individually, draw odds, best trophy potential, best units, etc. www.huntinfool.com Good Luck Send me an email and i will give you my opinion. Jason -
Burro Mountains Unit 23
Jason replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
I put in for that Hunt this year for my first choice and 27 for my second but no luck.. Hopefully next year i will get drawn and be that Client. Congrats Jason -
Crazyaboutcoues, After reading that article, if i didn't live in the city i would be buying goats to help pack in my gear. I know the Dwight Schum uses Llamas for his hunting. I know i couldn't pass on a 100"er. Good luck! Jason

Who was able to watch the Northwest Hunter Show with Ojo Caliente outfitters? How was it and did anyone happen to record it? I don't get that outdoor channel. Jason

azcouescrazy, The new issue of Rocky Mountain Game & Fish has a article written by Tony Mandile called Packing In For Coues Deer. The article talks about hunting in unit 27 and 28 with Scott Adams. Great article!! Jason

Crazyaboutcoues, 5yearcoueshunter In New Mexico can you have a draw permit and buy a land owner permit in the same year for the same animal?? Example: Get drawn for Elk in one unit and buy a Elk land owner tag also OR get drawn for a Mule Deer tag in 10 and buy a land owner tag for Mule Deer also Just Curious Jason

I agree with Ernesto C. You should never worry about overkill. Hunters have the responsibility to make the quickest and most humane kill as possible. I do not own a 300wsm but like the fact that it is a short mag and it comes in a more compact rifle(Light weight). I have read that it doesn't have the recoil of a 300win but almost the same ballistics. Good Luck Jason

AZOD Hunter, I sent you a email with my phone #. I have hunted 23 a couple of times for Elk and have always seen more Mule Deer then Elk. Not a good unit for out of shape hunters(atleast the northern part of 23). Jason

AZOD Hunter, Try Frieborn Canyon if hunters drive you out of your other spots. It's a good hike in and out of there and you won't see any road hunters. Jason

How did the lucky October tag holders do on their hunt?????? "Details"

Hey Bret, I have hunted Elk in Unit 23 a few times in the Northern half of the unit and around the Blue Range Wilderness Area. Have seen a bunch of Mule Deer but never any Coues Deer. Are you hunting in the Southern part of the unit? Jason

I would not recommended the .22.250 for deer size game. If you have to use it for deer hunting I would go with the 55 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. I believe it is the only bullet that is manufactured for the .22-250 that is not a soft point.

I do not shoot at anything beyond 40 yards. I have seen to many Elk and Deer jump bow strings and result is a miss or the worst... a wounded animal when shots are taken beyond 40 yards. Jason

Sierrasoloist, Buy Tony Mandile and Duwane Adams new book called "How To Hunt Coues Deer". All the Arizona units are covered in their book. I'm not familiar with 35A. Jason

a new photo gallery topic?
Jason replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Hello Amanda I would especially like to see pictures taken from a trail camera and have always liked to see pictures of wildlife. I've been debating buying another one since mine was destroyed by some ____ ___ in Unit 23 last year. Jason -

Joe and Marisa Cerreta also take pictures for the Arizona Elk Society and they are GREAT pictures. Also make great candy!!! -
I got the video at Don's Sport Shop. It is done buy the same guys that did Western Whitetails 1 and 2 so Amanda probably can sell it on here. Jason

I seen a replica of Dan King's huge Coues Deer Buck and pictures just don't do it justice. The replica was at Don's Sport Shop in Scottsdale. The size of that buck is unbelievable! If anyone hasn't seen it they should go and check it out. Jason

In the "How to Hunt Coues Deer" book about unit 23 it mentions the deer #'s are low. I thought i read or heard that there is no more cattle grazing in Unit 23, am i wrong? I have seen a lot of deer and a couple of great bucks in January while Archery hunting and have never seen any cattle but do see a group of horse every year. I hope to draw Unit 23 one of these years! Jason

I received and read my copy last night. Loved all the pictures and recognized some of the names from this forum. Good job guys. Great Book! I hope Duwane and Tony start "How To Hunt Coues Deer 2" very soon. Jason

Travis, I have tried scents to cover up my own but when they get down wind they can still pick up mine, blow a few times and disappear. I haven't tried a grunt tube yet but will have to buy one and give a try. Thanks Jason

Hello I am interested in buying a pair of fresh Coues deer sheds for rattling this January. I would like at least one side have three long points and the other two points at least. If you have a pair that you would like to sell for a reasonable price let me know? Thank you

I don't know what i was thinking.... I have asked my Dad to send me the horns from some small whitetails i killed in Michigan. They should work great. I had been carrying around a couple of mule deer antlers but are to big. I have been able to get Bucks to come out of the thick stuff when i rattle in January while Archery hunting but they never come any closer then a couple of hundred yards. I don't know if they see me or aren't interested enough to get closer. I thought maybe a smaller set of horns might sound more realistic to them. I'm going to try a small decoy this year and see if that helps any. I'm starting to think they are just to smart and skittish for this to work but i'm going too keep trying. Anyone have any sugestions or help hints that i could try. Jason

Chuck I moved out here from Michigan 5 years ago and there is not a better place to live and hunt then Arizona in my opinion. The rut seems to me that it runs from the last week in December through the first two weeks in January. Some of the units will have snow in the higher elevations and might make for a cold spike camp but some of the other hunters on this forum are much more familiar with the units then i am. Me personally, I don't hunt the water holes in January but haven't tried either. I try to glass a buck then TRY to stalk with-in bow range but i have never seen a tougher animal to stalk. You won't find a more fun and challenging animal to pursue, Good Luck. Jason
