Congrats on a great buck!

Congrats on a great buck! But did she say yes??

If it wasn't for what you already told me this morning, I'd make a joke about it being a javelina tag! Otherwise, see our morning text conversation. Congrats! As long as you're ok shooting a half-Merriam's/half-Rio Rio! the Rio excuse me 1/2 Rio (hopefully the back half is Rio) will complete my "Arizona Slam" just another check mark on my turkey hunting bucket list. Wouldn't that be a partial slam? Kinda like the "*" after Barry Bonds' home run record?

One of the best birthday weekend with the Shorties
IA Born replied to 257 STW's topic in Youth Hunters
Congratulations on all accounts! -
I know I posted a long story last April about the turkey hunt my daughter won through NWTF, but a couple of months ago, I was approached by our regional office to write a story about a turkey hunt that happened a few years ago. Our agency, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is very much pro hunting and fishing and is on a big mission to promote that heritage, so I was approached to tell a story. The conversation lead to an even better story, the one about my daughter's turkey hunt. It was difficult for me to tell the story in 500 words or less; I have too much bias with my pride in the story and the hunt. The person I was working with in our External Affairs office does this kind of writing and edited it down for size and style. I don't like bragging about my accomplishments, but I do like bragging about my kids' accomplishments, and I still love this turkey hunt as my favorite one ever! The story was recently published online on our FWS homepage and in the online journal The Outdoor Wire. https://www.fws.gov/…/…/Turkey-Hunting-and-the-Psalm-of-Life http://www.theoutdoorwire.com/features/232137

You should have seen the look on my son's face yesterday when I told him that we should know Friday if he has his javelina tag. And then when I told my daughter we should know if we both have Goulds tags.... Same here. If we're on the same hunt, I'm game for teaming up!

I asked that question not too long ago (might be the thread referred to above). Cactus Jack and several others convinced me that a Harris 27" swivel head was the way to go. I got one for my daughter's rifle and she loves it. Its probably going to bite me hard because I now see putting one on my son's rifle and at least one of mine!

That's awesome 2 more years for me to be able to take the little one out. And I agree, an azgf charge on my bank card is the most welcome charge for sure. I was bummed that my daughter didn't want to put in this year, but respected her wishes. I know I'll get my archery javelina tag, but I love hunting with and for my kids more than for myself! At the same time, I'm hoping the turkey gods will favor my crazy-high bonus points and give me (and my daughter) a Goulds tag finally!

Another bump for the two unopened 1-lb bottles of RL 15 and about half of a bottle of RL15 for sale. Unopened bottles are $25 each or I'll sell all three together for $50. Up in Flagstaff and not sure when I'll be coming through the valley anytime soon, but soccer is going, so we'll be down that way quite a bit through April. We have two games on Nov 11 (Gilbert and Queen Creek) and might be down there for a tournament the weekend after Thanksgiving day. Also open to reasonable trades.

Way back when I started loading for my daughter's rifle, it loved RL15, to I bought two extral 1-lb bottles. After her rifle's rebuild, it doesn't like RL15 anymore and, after testing loads for my son's rifle, neither does his. I have 2 unopened 1-lb bottles of RL 15 and about half of a bottle of RL15 for sale. Unopened bottles are $30 each or I'll sell all three together for $50. Up in Flagstaff and not sure when I'll be coming through the valley anytime soon, but soccer is starting up, so there is a good chance we'll be down that way starting in late Sept and going through March. I also have a bottle of RL22 that has had exactly six rounds worth of powder from it that I posted earlier for $20. That deal ended up falling through, so its back on the market.

What are the best aftermarket barrel options?
IA Born replied to Presmyk's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I've heard nothing but great things out of those barrels and will also throw in a plug for Pac Nor. Seth Staples, with Rim Country Rifles out of Parks is absolutely great, too. He's going to be converting my .25-06 into a .280AI to give my to my son in a couple of years when he grows into a full-size rifle. -
Hoping to see that magical charge that lets me know I get to take my son on his first big game hunt!

Congrats on a great buck! I know how it goes trying to get two passions lined up with your kids (soccer and hunting here). I'm going to show this to my daughter who says she wants to chase Coues deer next year! Congrats again!

I was hoping to log on and see that this stuff had sold to remove my temptation! If I didn't already have a 5wt and 3wt I'm in love with...but I do love those Ross reels! Good luck!

Trailer is sold. Thanks everyone who contacted me.

We've figured out that we've outgrown our pop up. I hate to sell it because its awesome, but its time to upgrade. Its a 2007 Rockwood Freedom 190 pop up camper. Oversize all terrain tires and lifted suspension. ATV rack on front with ramps. Only used a couple of times per year. Queen and full beds (heated), dining table fold into bed. 10,000 btu a/c. Has a propane furnace with electric ignition and thermostat and a built in fridge along with a three burner cook top. Has holding tank for clean water and also hookup for fresh campsite water with valves on tanks to empty. Full electric hook up (110) and cable TV hookup. The pop up has the power up and power down feature on the top (electric winch up and down to set up the camper), with manual crank down stabilizers. Outside gas hook up for BBQ grill (included). Also has outside shower head. Storage and wheel covers included Canvas is in good condition. We have the awning in the garage and its easy to reattach. Asking $4900 obo. Located in Flagstaff.

Same here. After three years of chasing my daughter on all of her elk, deer, and javelina hunts, its strange to be done so early since she only had an elk tag. Friends keep asking me when my next hunt is and I get sad....until I remember that I'll be taking my son on his first big game hunt in January! Good luck to everyone tomorrow! 218 Buck, 20A may have burned in the fire, but I've been in some of the areas and the regrowth is good. It should produce some good bucks soon, but should be holding bucks now.

Iv'e always been a huge fan of Leuopold Dual Dove Tail bases and rings. It seems that my new (to me) custom 6.5WSM, built on a pre-64 Win action doesn't like them when paired with my Vortex Viper 6-24x50. When I first mounted it and laser bore sighted it, I pegged the windage elevation all the way to the right to bring it centered. After remounting it twice to check for operator error, I still had the same problem, so I called Vortex, sent it back, and got it back rather quickly. One of the things Vortex and I spoke about was the overall action/barrel alignment and that I might need a set of windage adustable bases. I recently remounted the scope and just finished laser bore sighting it. Its only slightly better now, but I don't have much windage adjustment left for sighting it in at the range. I suppose its possible my boresighter is off, but I've never had problems with it before. Two questions: 1) Anyone in Flagstaff want to meet up with a different (better?) boresighter and check my alignment? 2) If its a need for windage adjustable bases, can anyone recommend a quality set of bases (prefer 2-piece) and associated 30mm rings that will fit a Win pre-64 action and give me some more windage adjustment, but won't break the bank? Thanks!

It looks like there might have actually been a case of operator error on this one! I just got done checking the scope and rings before remounting everything on my daughter's rifle. The rings appeared to be slightly off, so I readjusted them. That, in turn, got me five inches of adjustment to the left! My scope went from still needing to move two inches left to having five extra inches. I can live with that. Thanks again for all of the input and ideas!

Thanks! I had a great conversation with Big Browns yesterday, after he reached out to me and asked me to call him. We talked through quite a bit and I have a plan moving forward doing just what you say: process of elimination. I'm going to remount the bases, rings, and scope on my daughter's other rifle that isn't really set up quite yet and check that to see how the scope bore sights against a rifle that I know is true. I will also likely take her stuff and mount it on this rifle to check that set up for the rifle to eliminate those variables. Adam and I keep coming back to the scope really being the issue, but, after I hung up with him, I had to ask myself if maybe I don't have the rings in 100% perfect alignment. I know that 90-99% alignment can look good, but even a millimeter off will cause some of these issues. At the same time, I'm going to have my gunsmith go over everything with me when he gets back from his Utah deer hunt. I've seen what this rifle can do from my friend I bought it from, so I'm not giving up. You're right, 300RUM; there's just not that many things it could be.

I used to hang out with a former Green Beret and we got to talking .308s one day. He told me his amorers and CIA contacts all said 20" barrel was the optimal barrel for a .308. Take that for what its worth. But yes, pics!
