    34A, Need advice

Hello everyone....I know that e-scouting is frowned upon but I am using my last resort. I normally hunt unit 33 (16 years) but got drawn for 34A this year as my second choice. I have been all over the unit in the past week (Josephine Canyone, Wood Canyon, Gardner Canyon) and have seen very few deer. I am asking for a little advice on other areas that might be useful. I would normally have used the August/September archery hunt to do my scouting but I had a daughter born on August 11th that had heart surgery on August 17th at UMC. We were in the NICU for 6 weeks and that took up all of the scouting time and vacation time that I had at work. My daughter is doing great now and has no long term issues. If you are willing to provide any information it would be greatly appreciated and returned with any information on unit 33 that you may desire. I am interested to know if any deer are on the northern edge of the unit specifically in areas such as Mt. Fagan as it seems very much like the Redington Pass area in 33. All of the research I have done with the G&F department has not indicated that there are. Please PM if you can.....thanks everyone.

    34A, Need advice

Thanks...I spent a lot of time in the Gardner Canyon area and it is just way too thick to really glass anywhere. Also....ther is not much elevation change...seems like the hills and canyons are all the same size so you really cannot see very far. I'm also worried about the access as alot of the area is private property or at least it was posted as such.

    Nov unit 33 hunt

I too was in 33 over the weekend. Got there at 4:00am and hiked about 3 miles back in. Way too many hunters. I have never seen it like that and I have hunted Reddington Pass for over 10 years now. I will definetly be finding a new spot. P.S. Took a small forky...only saw 2 other bucks....none worth shooting. Figured I could use the meat. Will get my toad during the archery season.

    Secret to painless skull boiling?

Every one that I have ever done has been buried for about 6 months. Pull it out of the ground and it looks great. Spary it with a hose and your done. If you have grass find a corner you do not mind diggin up and bury the head (not antlers). Cover the antlers to keep the sun damage away and you should be good.
  6. Anyone seen any rutting acitivity yet? I know it usually starts in late December but I was hoping with the colder winter so far that it might be gearing up. Also....I have hunted these ghosts for several years but have yet to take one with a bow. Any tips, tricks, ideas for the rut? I have called, rattled and stalked but not much success. I can say that I have taken a mule deer 5 of the last 7 years. I hunt 33, reddington pass area. thanks

    Got a new jeep

I would go with the standard but the automatic is nice in certain situations.....like driving on pavement. The stick is nicer cause you can stay in a lower gear at a higher rpm if needed.

    Got a new jeep

Amanda, I had a 90 Cherokee for a long time. I put about a 100K on it. I lifted it, rebuilt the engine twice and replaced the clutch 3 times. I finally had to sell it after having it towed off of Mt. Lemmon with electrical problems. If I had to do it all over again I would. That thing, when running well, would go anywhere. I had a full vinyl interior which worked great for packing out animals. A hose in the car would wash out all the blood and hair in the world and it would be dry within 10 minutes. Good luck with your jeep and remember....take care of it and it will take care of you! I wish I still had mine!

250 yd stalk.....hit him at 10 yds. Best stalk I have ever made......he was feeding with two other bucks that were both 3x3's. This one was much wider than those and was only a 2x3. I like this ones rack much better as he was taller and wider. I had all three deer within 20 yds.

I do not....I just love PSE Bows. I work at Raytheon. I just moved to the Northwest side and have not hunted the area. I have hunted Reddington for 10+years now and have taken muleys 7 of those 10 with a bow. The only time I have taken a whitetail is with a rifle. THese things really get on my nerves but I love to hunt them. I will shoot the first P&Y muley that I see or the first Coues that walks in front of me with antlers. This is the last deer I took out of Reddington

Lower areas in Reddington have some nice Muleys in there. You need to go past mile marker 14 and get into the washes. Find a water source anywhere near the lower desert area and glass. You will see them on the sunny sides of the slopes in the morning and afternoons. Good luck and I will see you up there. I'll be in the white blazer with the SKNSFN license plate!

    December/January Rut

Thanks Redman, I have read one of your previous posts where you talked about that before. Did you break any teeth on that shot? OUCH! Anyways thanks for the tip! Are you usually succesful caling them in? Any pointers?

    December/January Rut

I have had little success. Had a small 3 pointer (80") come into about 100 yds last year. But he would not come any closer. I talked to Duwayne Adams (How to Hunt Coues Deer) yesterday and he said that there are a couple of calls out there that work well once they get into that range. One is made by Modern Call Products.
