Ground squirrels, good eats?
Coach replied to CatfishKev's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
It's probably 100% mental, but I have no problem eating tree squirrels, rabbits for that matter. Something about ground squirrels just seems dirty - like they're diseased rodents. I shoot 'em all the time and wouldn't eat one unless my life depended on it. Same with Jack Rabbits (why are cotton tails OK?). I did try to eat a jack rabbit one time and it was like eating boot leather - maybe just trying to cook it over a fire made it so bad. -
Living up here in the White Mountains, we've learned there are 2 extended weekends it's best just to stay home as much as possible - Labor Day and Memorial Day. We stock up before-hand and just stay off the roads as much as possible.

Ever get to the point in life when you have to take a really hard look at where you are, where you've been and what's left when you leave? I'm a religious person and only 45 but I have been thinking about these things a lot lately. My body is telling me time is short, but it could just be nothing. I think I have a lot left to do here, lives to touch, but lately I've just wanted to find God and make peace. I'm out on the Campfire, because that is where I've always found people searching for the same thing.

Man, my heart goes out to you. Thieves are the lowest of the low. I really hope your brother recovers his gear, although it's pretty much impossible at this point. I hope all fathers out here teach their sons not to be the kind of person that steals another man's hard earned belongings.

Ya, probably right. It's not that I'm not hunting. Just last week I had 4 antelope in archery range. 2 were dinks I couldn't justify shooting. 2 were studs but I somehow couldn't draw my bow. I've gone over the reasoning in my head - I didn't want to take a shot that might lead to a wounded animal - but at the same time, I know a part of me didn't want to take a life I didn't have to. It was fun seeing them come in, get nervous, just watch them and learn how they interact.

I really want to thank each and every one of you who has responded. In a way I feel a little bad for bringing up such a topic, but the responses here help me, and I'm sure others who are reading and learning from the experiences you have shared here. Really - thank you all.

Nice bucks! That's so awesome you and Tessa got to share that hunt. Huge congrats. Goats in the rut are SO fun to hunt. Kudos on making some amazing memories with your daughter.

Looks like a Lyman walleye.

I'm in Lakeside - not exactly where you wanted to park, but I have room for it here. Shoot me a PM if interested.

Both the 26 and 28 are shooters for sure. My buddy sent pix of groups from his 28 today with factory ammo and they were fantastic. That said they both burn a LOT of powder - more expensive to reload, shorter barrel life. If you go in knowing what the trade-offs are, you probably won't be disappointed. Kind of the Ferrari of rifles - high performance, high maintenance cost, not super longevity, but when you have them in their prime, pretty fun and impressive.

Not a bad little buck. What an awesome looking muley. Congrats to your friend!

One you want a closer look at for sure.

Wow, I might jump on that - do you ship?

"How did I live without it?" Hunting Gear
Coach replied to rossislider's topic in Other Hunting Gear
Disposable latex gloves. Right up there with the baby wipes. -
Not to get off subject, but I kinda like the new Badlands Approach. Just bought a monster fanny pack in it. I do think it's interesting how successful these high-end hunting clothes have gotten. A piece here and there is fun, but I can't imagine doing a whole outfit in it. To each their own.

My son cuts wood as a side job and is looking for a good used saw - something like an older Stihl 440.

Thanks guys. I know he was looking at one at the Hub yesterday but it sounded like it was pretty beat up.We'll keep our eyes open.

As I get older, seems I sleep less. I got up around 3:45 this morning and was doing some reading on my iPad. Unfortunately, I had my reading glasses on, and I saw this incredibly bright light in front of our house. I assumed it was my oldest son coming home to get ready for work since he has a big light bar on his truck. A couple minutes later, there was a huge BOOM and the whole house shook. I grabbed my flashlight and went outside to see if something had gotten hit by lightning or what in the heck just blew up. Apparently the bright light was a meteorite that actually struck around 40 miles SW of Show Low and the giant boom was the sonic blast as it entered the atmosphere. Anyone else up at 4:00 this morning to witness it? I know my buddy thought his boat had blown up - lol.

Excellent footage of a fantastic buck. Thanks for putting this up.

Thanks for sharing this. IMO IMR4350 and H4350 sc are some of the most versatile powders out there. Anything from 25 - 30 cal, even magnum loads, best all around "go-to" powder to work up a load with.
