    No rut behavior

Know a guy hunting late 27 - should be a stud hunt. No rut where he is, so I kinda joked about the warm weather. Says it's cold and snow on the ground parts of the unit. Could just be a bad year.

With all due respect, Mulepackhunter, I agree with the second half of what you said - can't agree on "still means the same thing".

    The Perfect Rib Roast

About 4 years ago I startd a Christmas tradiion of cooking up a home made Prime Rib roast. The first time I tired it, I hit it out of the ballpark. The past 3 years to follow, it was OK, even realy good but not anywhere near that first one. So, I lucked into it once but lat's talk about what makes the perfect prime rib. I've got this link to Chef's awesome rib... http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22895 But I have to ask - seems there are two camps for standing rib roast (aka prime rib), one is cook really hot, really fast with beef stock arond 500 degrees. The other is you cook slower at 350 degrees and keep the internal meat under 120 degrees. I've got a really good hunk of prime rib waiting to ge cooked up this year, and I'll rub it with EVOO and a dry rub we already like, but the question is, is it better to run really hot, like 500 degrees and really sear it and let it stand, or is somethign like 400 degrees until the meat around the bone gets to 120 and let it stand for 15 minutes?

    Terrible Hunter Etiquette times 2

Big congrats to you and your son - great buck. With all due respect, unless I'm missing something, that sounds exactly what most public land hunting is - you got there early, got it done and others were hunting that area for the same reason you were. Best wishes, Coach

    Merry Christmas

I hope today as we exchange gifts, we remember the greatest gift of all - The Son of Man, the Son of God, whose life and death were the greatest gift of all. It's His birth, life, death and resurrection we are all celebrating today. Once again, Merry CHRISTmas!

    Headlamps

There are so many really good ones available these days under $20 makes me feel silly for my $60+ petzl that's still my go-to. One thing I find annoying about headlamps is they have so many "modes" - bright, brighter, flashing, red, green - and you have to cycle through all of them. I want one that is really bright and has two modes, on and off with one big button you can feel through gloves.

    Late season tactics

Hate to say it but driving around is probably the most "effective" approach. Personally, I like still hunting - hiking, listening, looking. While doing this for deer this year in NM I was surprised to find myself right in the middle of a bunch of turkey. Had it been a turkey hunt, it would have been awesome, but for effectiveness, I'd call it a low-probability approach, but super fun if it does come together.

    Merry Christmas

And a HUGE thanks to you, Doug for sharing so many of your amazing photos with us - honestly, one of my favorite things on this great site. That and whenever Chef chimes in with his art of cooking.

    Morning with the boy!

Love it. Congrats to you and your son. Don't you just hate how phone pix end up sideways or upside down? Certainly not the fault of the site, but seems to be a very common occurrence lately.
  14. Nope. It's still available.
  15. DANG! I always miss the great deals...

    Guns for sale

I'll start out with a Remington 870 youth 20 gauge shotgun. This thing has killed more birds than a wind farm. Has extra chokes, including turkey, aftermarket truglo sight. Bass Pro has 'em for $329 new but without all the extras plus tax. Asking $290 ftf, obo. Next up, a Stevens 555 12 gauge over-under. Brand new in the box, never shot, great wood. The pic below is not the actual one, that's the one I kept for myself. I'll post better pictures of the walnut stock tomorrow (I hope, we have a Christmas party tomorrow so I'll be cleaning house). 5 chokes. Amazing gun for the price, I just don't need two. Google these - great value for the $$. Normal retail is $550 to over $600 plus tax. I'm asking $520 OBO. Finally, a savage 110 FP in 25-06. Not really sure how to price this one. It has a Cabela's Alaskan Guide 6.5-24x50 scope. It's a tack-driver, but heavy. I just don't use it for much more than exploding p-dogs. With this one comes reloading dies, brass, already loaded ammo and probably some bullets. It's got the original black stock painted in camo, with wear from carrying it around with a pack a few times. I've got reloading info to go along with it. It has the lighter accutrigger too. I've got at least $900 in the rifle, scope, dies, brass, etc. I'm thinking $650 for all, but open to offers. In trades about the only thing I'd look for is a Tikka t3 Light, Ruger M77 or Winchester Featherweight - in .243. I'm in Lakeside, so it's all person-to-person. If I need to ship I will, but you pick up the FFL and shipping costs. All serious offers considered.

    Looking fo a kodiak tent

One other thing to keep in mind, competitive edge often has deals where they include a ground tarp that is exactly the same footprint as the tent - that really helps protect the floor. I've also bought a few mover's blankets from Harbor Freight - they are like $4 each when they're on sale and you can line the inside of your floor with them.

    Looking fo a kodiak tent

I bought mine from http://www.competitiveedgeproducts.com. Make sure you get the newer model with big windows - the older models have a tendency to get hot and hold in moisture from what I've heard.
