Awesome hunt - thanks for the story and pictures.

Great pix. When my boys are all old enough we're gonna spend a couple weeks on the Russian River horsing those beautiful reds out. What an awesome place. For those hunters and fisherman who have never seen the "last frontier", you have to make it a priority some time in your life. Thanks for sharing! Here are some pix from my last Alaska trip - man these pix remind me of how old I'm getting... A "Red" from the Russian River A big rainbow from the Russian A small King from the lower Kenai Some halibut and ling cod from out of Seward A nice Seward Bay Silver Enjoy!

Way to do the solo bivy hunt - IMO one of the hardest and most rewarding ways to hunt. Looks like you really know what you're doing with the right gear and the tenacity to get away from the crowds. Awesome hunt, thanks for sharing.

Bobbyo is DEAD ON wrt to score. That's a great buck that has eluded many a hunter for many years. You did very well, and I'm glad to see you hooked on chasing these elusive deer.

Congrats on a great looking 3x3. Great job and thanks for sharing - and let's hear the whole story. Sounds like you had a really great hunt.

By "bivy camp" I just mean a small backpacking camp where you carry *everything* in your backpack to your hunting destination. Small tent, small sleeping bag, mountain house and other dehydrated meals, tiny cookstoves... The idea is to camp further in than the guys with comfortable setups like campers, wall tents, 5th wheels etc. will ever get because they'd have to start hiking at midnight or 2:00 AM to get to the same glassing areas you can roll out of your bag and hike a couple hundred yards to hunt. It's a GREAT way to hunt, but a little scary solo - especially in any of the Southern-most areas of AZ or NM.

Another big "Thank You!!!" to all veterans and those currently serving. We all owe you a huge debt of gratitude and respect. You are the front line of freedom and everything that makes America strong and great. My best wishes go out to all of the young men and women currently deployed and your families. And to those who have served our country proudly in the past, thank you - from the bottom of my heart.

Plus one for me and my family! Thank you, and thank all of you vets for your service to our country. I truly believe that our soldiers are the heart and soul of this country.

I've called in several, and at that time, BP's first question was whether they were carrying large packs. From what I can tell, they'll pick up the illegals when they can, but their first priority is the smugglers - which is understandable. The next question is whether they were carrying any visible arms. This year the BP agent I spoke to said the number carrying long arms (rifles) was on the increase - although many were so rusted they probably don't even work - for what it's worth. That's not to say that the threat is low - we all know that the big mule trains are guarded with serious cats with serious weapons - lots of AR15's and FN Five-Sevens. Those are the one I worry about.

Welcome to the site! I love to see you youth hunters getting out there and experiencing the thrill of the hunt. Let's see some pix of that deer! BTW, I was in my 20's before I got my first ever coues, so you are kicking some serious tail! Keep it up bro!

Great job! Way to get at those 'yotes. I'm hoping to get out there and do the same this year. I've been saving up for a good electronic caller, but I think I'll just go at 'em with the old-fashioned mouth calls.

Nice glass, Cory. I bet you'll find some takers.

I agree with lots of the suggestions here - Slick Tricks, Magnus Stingers/Buzzcuts, G5 Strikers all seem to fly well. Don't forget the old "vanilla" Muzzy 100's. Great head, and if they fly well for you they are devestating for sure. Like nlacost said, you'll have to do a little trial and error to find out which ones fly best for you.

Thanks to CWT for providing a forum to share in all the hunting experiences of so many great folks. Seems I live on here these days. I just wanted to recap an amazing season my family has been blessed with this year. It truly was a year of "firsts" for us all. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a truly great year. The pix are in chronological order. Nick's first javelina Nick's first turkey Matt's first turkey My first archery deer My first mule deer (2nd archery buck) My first muzzleloader harvest Good luck to all of you who still have tags this year. I hope it turns out to be a very memorable season for you. Get those kids out there! Jason

TTT - shameless plug for my boys! I LOVED seeing them connect with turkeys and a javi last Spring!!!

I can really appreciate the dilemma you are faced with. I did a solo bivy hunt this year in an area that I was very concerned about being able to safely hunt and come home to my family - based on drug runners and all of the associated risks. It turned out OK, but being out there totally alone was not exactly the relaxing break from routine I might have liked. Maybe the best solution is to use this forum to "recruit" a couple of helpers. A small bivy camp made up of two or three people is a lot less vulnerable than an individual going solo. There are still no guarantees, but it definate ups the ante for anyone who might mess with you if the target is larger and less predictable. It's simple schooling or herding mentality - numbers mean strength where an isolated individual makes an easy target. On the other hand, I really believe that the smugglers are hoping to avoid ANY confrontation that might complicate their jobs. They *surely* have been taught that any armed confrontation will only fuel the efforts against them. They have to know that any incident that results in hunters or hikers getting killed down there will force more and more enforcement efforts against them - and let's be honest - that's bad for business. Let's keep hunting these areas, but be smart and informed. And I for one will volunteer to go along with anyone looking for some back-up - taking into account work and family commitments, of course . If we all band together we can help eachother to not become targets.
-
Dang - sorry to hear that. I sure hope it turns up.
-
Dang - 23 seems to be especially bad for this crap. I sure hope someone finds this "fellow hunter" and gives him a lesson in ethics he won't soon forget. Very sorry to hear about yet another loss to the camera theives.

That's a great write up! Thanks for sharing it with us...I can only imagine what was going through your head when you saw that droppped pack.

Tail Chaser, you won't BELIEVE how fast that little guy will grow up. It won't be long at all before he'll be waiting for you to catch up! Great job getting him involved and exited early. If I had a quarter to bet, it would be on you two becoming life-long pardners. Keep it up and keep showing us pix of him on your future hunts.

It would be easy to play "Monday Morning Quarterback" and tell you what went wrong. In all honesty, I doubt that anyone reading this post has not been in a similar situation. You manned up, called G&F, got it all out in the open. That tells me exactly where your ethics are and I commend you for it. Your son probably learned more from this hunt than many adults on here have had to experience, and you did the best you could - after the fact - to stay above board and do the right thing. Good job. You set a good example. Of course, if you could do it again, you probably wouldn't have suggested the second shot, but we are all in a continuous learning cycle. You did the right thing by bringing G&F in and staying honest - that says a lot about your character.
-
Very cool! Wow, to see a lion like that in persuit of a coues, and take a great buck on the same hunt - what a great hunt!

There are good muslims in our military - guys and gals who believe in America and are willing to put their lives on the line for all of us. That said, this *particular* muslim had a history of making some pretty telling "Jihadist" statements in support of suicide bombers, etc. I'm not for all-out profiling or excluding anyone who truly wants to defend our nation. In this case though, there were enough red flags that he should have been recognized as a threat. Just my $.02

Very nice buck! Congrats, and way to stick with it. It's funny how those bigger bucks sit tight - darn smart, but you guys did it right. Good job!
