I've got a Ranger, but I'm hesitant to take it hunting because it seems like it would be fairly easy to steal. I've done some searching and I know you can get alarms for them, but I'm not interested in that. Seems the only way to immobilize them is with a cable, but that doesn't seem real foolproof either. Just curious what others out there have found to keep your OHV safe when you leave it to hunt for the day.

Just in case anyone was wanting one of these and didn't get one before they doubled in price, Amazon still has a couple for $69.95. And they are eligible for Amazon Prime, meaning free 2-day shipping and no tax. Just thought I'd pass this along. http://www.amazon.com/Badlands-Mag-Bino-Case-3-Inch/dp/B00200MX30/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1343148310&sr=1-1&keywords=badlands+bino+case

Double post removed.

Wow - I way over shot it! Looks like I gave him an extra 20 inches. So, maybe for myself, the best way to guage if it's over 185 is if I lose control of my bowels when I see it. Told you I stink at this.
-
Good info guys - good to hear they aren't stolen that often in the field.
-
Well, I stink at this, but I need to learn how as well. I always look first at the width of the frame, then how deep the forks are, front and back, then mass, then junk. The muley in pic has a great frame - looks really wide. Mass looks OK and fork depth is a little weak. So if I had to guess a score I would have to put him around high 170s to mid 180s. Don't get me wrong, that is a gorgeous buck. If I saw that buck anywhere in the state besides the Kaibab I'd shoot him opening day with weapon, if I didn't have a heart attack first.
-
Nice looking bull - Good luck getting on him again this year!

Just tried to stick my 15s in them and they don't fit well at all - that's fine for me, I'm using them for 10s but I would not recommend them for Swaro 15x56s.
-
I'll try them with my 15s and get back with you in a bit.

That is WILD! I bet that had you guys tickled pink all night.

Amazon is also a great source for SD cards. I bought 3 4GB cards and one 8GB for a little over $17 shipped last week. Just did a quick search and found this - not quite as cheap but a pretty good deal... http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDSDB-004G-B35-4GB-SDHC-card/dp/B000WQKOQM/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1343068804&sr=8-11&keywords=sandisk+sd+card That's under $15 for 3 shipped right to your door and no tax.

+1 on being VERY careful about your words and actions when dealing with ANY law enforcement officer, including G&F. If you happen to find one on a day he/she is looking to "make some busts", your words can and will be used against you - even out of context. I generally love to see G&F out there and even used to wave them down and start a conversation. I've stopped this practice, and now let them drive on by. 9 of 10 are super good folks and will tell you anything you want to know. But if you happen to hit that 1 out of 10 that assumes everyone in the woods is a poacher - or doing something illegal, you can find yourself on the defensive real quick. These kind of guys can and will find something to use against you - the last thing you want to do is give them ammo. Again, I have the upmost respect for AZGFD wardens and I want them out there doing what they do. The vast majority I've encountered in 3 decades of hunting here really have their head and heart in the right place. They want to protect our game from poachers, our forests from people dumping trash and to preserve hunting, fishing and the outdoor lifestyle we all love while protecting it from those that would abuse it. That said, there are the few who have a different mentality. These guys assume everyone out there is doing something wrong, and they make it their sole purpose to go "make things right" by their minds. If you encounter one of these guys, whether it's G&F, DPS, local sheriff's posse, whatever - they will do anything and say anything to get you say something they can use against you. Every question is loaded, a trap, and the more you say, the more rope you give them to hang you with. IMO, if you want scouting advice, ask other hunters. If you are confronted by any LEO give the shortest honest anwers possible.

+1 on the paint fading to purple. That's why I bought a sparkly red one.

Grijalva supports U. N. Arms Trade Treaty

This is bigger than just the second Ammendment. Obama is part of an organized group dead set on creating a global government - a single governing body in charge of the money and laws that all nations must abide by - superceding their own "federal laws" including the Constitution. Before you suggest adjusting my tinfoil hat, do some investigating on your own and see if this is and outlandish accusation or whether the facts support it. Google is your friend, and it's all right there. The funny thing is, they aren't even denying it. -
I posted on some other threads about home-made boxes I have used to protect my camera. Several members have PM'd me for more info on the design so I thought I'd just start a thread here and put the pictures up for everyone. Of course, if someone is determined enough, they will take it - or destroy it. One caveat. These designs involve lag bolting a steel box to a tree. If you are offended by that practice, or want to discuss the legality of it, I would prefer not to do it on this thread. For what it's worth, treestand steps screw into the tree as far as the bolts I use to secure my cameras. The basic idea is to keep the lock inside the box or protected so it can’t be snipped with bolt cutters and attach the box to a tree with lag bolts that are only accessible when the box is open. Here’s one for a DLC Covert 3.0 CA Two halves. The front slides down onto the back. There’s a lock lug sticking out from each side. How the lock lugs look when the halves are slid together . The back side of the box. The serrated “wings” ensure that you can’t get a blade in from the side. All done. Those little chain “ears” are just in case I want to put a python lock on it to give it the illusion that it’s not lag bolted to the tree. I never use them and will eventually cut them off. Here’s one for a Moultrie M80. Little deeper body and I added a swiveling mount for this one. This one uses a traditional hinge design with the lock on the opposite side. Gotta cover up the lock so it can’t be snipped. Hinge. Notice the top cover slides under a sturdy lip so there’s no pry point there. Holes in the back for lag bolts. Big holes in the box, small ones at in the pivoting mount. Side view with pivot mount. Front view finished. They’re a little heavy, but it would take some work to get the camera out of one.

\ +1. The locals here revere the deer herd for the most part, and really get active about reporting suspicious activity. We did have a case a couple years back where some local guys were shooting horses from the reservation, then sitting on the carcasses to poach bears, but G&F did catch them. Shane - wow, I've seen all those pix on here before, but I've got to hand it to you. You know where to find those big deer. I've hunted and scouted 3C for many years and have yet to see the kind of deer your family and clients harvest. Kudos.

Nice bucks and great pictures - but PLEASE don't tell me it's going to be a tough year up there. I might have finally drawn it.

I've got a ranger and really love it. Haven't driven the Big Red, but Honda builds very high quality stuff. Hard to go wrong either way. I didn't get the appeal of OHVs for a long time. Played around for a couple weekends in some owned by friends and family members, and just had to get one. I've got the '06 Ranger 750, and our family has had a ton of fun in it.

Now that's some funny stuff. 6ANut.....glad you had an encounter with this guy because it got you here on CWT. I'm sure you have found most of the cwt members are willing to share information and many are very knowledgeable about coues deer. Welcome to the best coues deer site on the internet and keep in mind that just because a sticker might say cwt.com on a piece of equiptment doen't always reflect the integrity of this site. TJ +100 TJ, very well said. And I'll add this - while this is mostly a "coues" hunting site, I think the very best hunters of elk, mule deer, bear, lions, javelina, pronghorn, coyotes and jackrabbits in this state visit this site daily and share ideas and information in ways that other sites could only dream of.

Said it on the other thread, but I think they'll come out Tuesday afternoon. It's looking good so far based on CC hits that were approved.

Since they dumped their old online vendor, it has been totally chaotic. I'm a software engineer, and believe me, this isn't rocket science. The way you have to apply online is incredibly poorly designed, and the way they process the applications is even worse. Just imagine if online vendors conducted their business this way. Now, compare that with companies like Amazon. Not to get off on too much of a tangent here, but my wife bought a Kindle from Amazon and got a year's worth of the Amazon Prime service. With that service, I can buy products online, have them delivered in 2 buisiness days and pay zero tax and zero shipping. It's easier and cheaper than driving to a store and buying something. I think G&F did a great thing by bringing back the online system, but the vendor they are using is not up-to-par with current e-commerce capabilities.

Looks like it's finally going to happen - first Kaibab hunt
Coach posted a topic in Mule Deer Hunting
About 27 years ago when I moved from Oklahoma to Arizona, one of the first things my family did was visit the Grand Canyon, including the North Rim. I saw more deer in one weekend than I had seen in my entire life - and I hoped one day I would get to hunt up there. I don't want to jump the gun, but my wife informed me that our cc was hit for 2 youth tags and one adult - I put all three boys in for unit 27 youth, separately, and for myself either 13B or 12A West, late. So it looks a lot like I'll finally get the chance to go on the hunt of my dreams. All day long I've had the "butterflies", can't even focus at work, lol. I'm not even sure whether I'd prefer one hunt over the other - At least I have some idea what to expect in 12AW, as I went up there a couple years ago with a buddy and got pretty familiar with the area, but the possibility that it could be 13B, an area I've never even seen....makes me nervous. I won't be hiring a guide - nothing against guides - just not the way I want to hunt it, but I am hoping to go up there with some ideas to get started, and try to make the best of the information I have at hand. Normally, I wouldn't ask for unit-specific information, but, c'mon this is the strip. I would love to get any suggestions via PM of course, and it's not like a normal hunt where sharing information can wreck your honey hole. Most of us will only hunt this area once, maybe twice in a lifetime if we're lucky. If anyone here has hunted these units in the past and has some suggestions of things to do, things not to do, places to go or avoid, I would love to hear from you. I'm hoping to avoid driving too much and glassing too little, trying to figure out where I should be, but there is so much country and it's a long way away, it's going to be tough to pre-scout without some ideas and insights from people who have done it before. -
I alway thought a little c4 that could be detonated via cell phone would cut down on the theives.

Yeah, rub it in, TJ! LOL. It's after midnight on a work night and where am I??? Right here on CWT already dreaming of big bucks.
