Vortex Talon HD vs Eagle Optics Ranger ED
azpredator@work replied to couesobsession's topic in Optics and tripods
looks the same to me, but I have no knowledge of either company -
I have both the flatlines and fmjs as well as axis. I wouldn't ever consider the flatlines for an elk arrow. They are 3 grains/inch lighter than the fmj arrows. Not knowing your exact arrow length I guess you are shooting the 400 spine with a 63 lb draw. The flatlines 400's are 7.4 gr/in and the 400 fmj's are 10.2 gr/in. The closer you can get to the magical 400 total grains the better. For elk, I use 400 fmj's with a 50 grain brass insert that totals 447 grains. This arrow packs a heck of a punch. Use flatlines for coues and get some fmj or like weighted arrows for heavy boned animals like elk. Good luck on your hunt...

I am following a little over a dozen bulls and none are full 6x's yet like you have. Check out the trail camera section for more pics from this year.

straight fletching or helical?
azpredator@work replied to Timberghost's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
If you're shooting a fixed blade past 40 yards I would definitely say helical. Helical fletching will cause the arrow to straighten out faster and compensate for minor flaws in shot execution better than straight or offset. More helical = more arrow drag = less speed & more noise. Different type of fletchings all have their own "good and bad" so you have to decide what you want. Go ahead and fletch up some arrows with different combos and see what you like the best. I shoot a radical right helical on all my arrows. -
I like white vanes so I try to match a color on the arrow for my cresting. Here's an example of the fmj arrows I made up for this year's elk hunt. Post a pic with what you decide.

great job and good luck in the competition! -
Congrats superjumbo. I drew a first season unit 13 tag. I drew the same tag last year and had success so I'm stoked.
-
They DID cut back the # of tags for bulls in 22n this year. My son drew back to back tags so I spent a lot of time scouting the unit the last couple years. I've never heard so many complain about the number of tags and the low quality of hunt as 22 rifle bull (early or late). You will get out of a hunt what you put into it. In my opinion the cut in tags was not necessary as the bulls were located as easily as the hunters riding around on quads and making quater mile circle hunts. The coues in the unit are spectacular. I don't rifle hunt, but my son drew a general tag his first year. We had many opportunities on 80" bucks and one 100"+. It's not hard to find areas to hunt by yourself if you start walking. Glass, glass, glass and good luck.....

Anyone fish the White Mountains this weekend?
azpredator@work replied to AZ RANGER's topic in Fishing
Several of us went up to reservation lake and it was great fishing there. Nothing with any size, but I was catching 50+ fish / day. Power bait, worms and small #0 mepps spinners all worked very well. Good luck..... -
This 5x6 has hung out in the same canyon since last November and has been with another 4x5 bull every time I saw him or got him on camera. Now, he is hanging out with this "button" bull and the 4x5 hasn't crossed any camera since mid-december...? With binoculars @ 60 yards it looked like his antlers were cut off. Can't tell as much with trail cam pics, but I figured it was pretty interesting. The "button" bull has a large body just like the 4x5 had as well. Here are some bulls that are starting to develop. Enjoy...

mathews drenalin, diamond edge & rascal
azpredator@work replied to azpredator@work's topic in Classified Ads
Mathews Drenalin and Diamond edge bows have sold. Thanks a lot.... Still have the rascal for sale. Great first bow. 15lbs-30lb adjustment, small, lightweight, fast, lots of draw adjustment. $160 -
WHALE - no tags for us quite yet. We only have hopes for Nm left. Thanks for asking. I guess I should have mentioned this bull had the same stubs in January. He couldn't have shed them that early. I never paid much attention to him or any of his pics until I saw "close-ups" in the binos. Just seemed strange, but elk are pretty mysterious. I can't wait until we start seeing some fully developed racks out there! Good luck to everyone....

Rocky stalker boots size 10.5 - bought for my son and he grew from a size 10 to a 12 in 3 months. Used on 1 hunt for 5 days. $50 Bushnell yardage pro compact 800 rangefinder. $100 Bohning blazer vane jig. $20 Nikon 13"-36" lightweight tripod. $35 Sitka bivy 30 backpack. I bought this pack last year and love it - I just need bigger for 6 nights of bivy hunting. It's a 3000cu inch pack that currently retails for over $300. Very well designed pack. Super quiet, extremely lightweight and built tough. Zippers and pockets where you want / need them. No blood stains. I have packed out a first load (elk meat) of 80 lbs with this pack. It was not comfortable, however this is the most comfortable pack I have owned carrying loads between 15-60 lbs. Lots of details go into this pack. $240 Cabelas Outback lodge tent - perfect condition with extra stakes. Paid $300 will sell for $200.

I took the family to Alamo for mother's day weekend. It's an annual trip. Every year the bass fishing is great, but this year was something speacial. My 12 year old son was cathching 30 bass a day on topwaters. From Thursday - Sunday our worst day was around 75 bass. We fished all over, but found the best banks to be on the east side of the lake for early and late topwater and down lake when the wind would cloudy up the water a 1/4 oz rattle trap was just what they wanted. I caught 8 "overs", but everything else were slot fish. Good luck to everyone.
