Get those big plastic totes from Walmart or wherever, the kinds with the locking lid handles so they don't blow off in the back of your truck, mark each one with a sharpie...cooking gear, tent, sleeping bags, etc. then when it's time to go to camp, you just load the totes. Keeps your stuff organized, and dry if it rains or snows

meat in the freezer tastes better than any size of antlers on the wall, great deer

I would never take a shot that far, even if I were capable, which I'm not, there is just too much that can go wrong with that shot. Even if you've practiced at that distance a thousand times, up slope draft, cross wind between you and the animal, swirling wind patterns, the coriolis effect, too much can go wrong to insure a definite humane kill. I'm glad the shot was successful, but for myself, if I can't get closer, I don't fill my tag, period. Impressive shooting though.

I do a lot of videography for high school and middle school sports, have done it for years and am very calm, cool and collected at it, and the footage always turns out very well.... and have taken the video camera many times on hunts with friends and family, and STILL haven't got it on tape, lol. Seems like at the moment it's like "DEER!" and everything else leaves my head. Even from a thousand yards, you got it on tape and you have it forever now. Awesome job! -
The time spent with your dad would have made a couple of spikes worth it. Awesome job!

Man, what an AWESOME Christmas gift! That's a huge buck, so much mass! -
Awesome job! Down here on the border it seems so hard to get all our tags filled, gone 2 for 3 a few times, 3 for 4 once, and 3 for 3 a couple of times, but it's rare everyone fills their tags. Excellent work, and with pictures like those the story doesn't have to fill the entire page, it's true what they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Great job, great bucks!

I have been on so many hunts where the tag was filled in the last 20 minutes of legal shooting light on the very last day. I've gutted so many deer in the dark I feel like I could do it with a blindfold on, lol. Way to stick it out and get your buck, it doesn't look near 80 inches to me, but maybe,..he is decently wide and the tip to tip spread is out there too,...I'm sure you know what you're doing when it comes to measuring... but considering all the hard work you put into it, I'd say that's as good as a 110 any day!

I know this is a little late, but good for this coming year...or ANY year really. I live in 30B and have hunted it extensively for mule deer and whitetail. When you drive out to the area you want to hunt for whitetail, look for the highest, nastiest, most inaccessible place in the area, farthest from the road, and head up there, lol. That's where the deer are. If possible get up there in the dark and wait for the sun to come up, then glass and glass and glass. So many hunters in this area seem to want to stay on the road and glass from the truck, then wonder how come they aren't seeing deer, or not filling their tag every year. There are a LOT of whitetail bucks in this area, and you will NEVER see those from the road. It seems that about 90% of the hunters in this area are "road hunters", which is great news for the hunters who will actually get their legs under them and climb, and walk. The deer ARE out there. So, if you get out there in the middle of nowhere, the hawks and vultures are flying BELOW you, and you are dreading the thought of getting a buck because of the miles and miles and canyons and hills and mesquites and ocotillos you're gonna have to go through to get him back to the truck, then you're in a pretty good spot, lol

excellent buck, and awesome story...good job dad, lol

Great buck. Getting out there on the mountain will get you to the deer a heck of a lot better than those "roadrunners" will ever know, lol. My brother and dad both got really nice 4x3 mule deer last year in an area covered up with road hunters...my brother's in the morning, my dad's that same afternoon. Loved the looks on the road hunters faces when we drove by with those big bucks on the back of the quad, lol. They were all saying the same thing...we didn't even SEE any deer...no kidding jerk, try getting off the truck and actually HUNT! lol

According to what I've read, and from my personal experiences with these deer, This is a nice, but not outstanding buck, definitely a "trophy" but not going to make that magical "100 inch" mark. The ears on this deer are about 5-6 inches long, so when comparing the side view picture it appears the overall beam length should be about 13 inches, which is 32% of the overall scoring....to make a long story short, and not go through all the steps I took to arrive at my conclusion, I would score this buck at about a 77, so unless he adds a lot of mass, and some more length in this years antlers, I think he will still be under 100. I am enclosing a few pictures and links so that it can help in your knowledge on the topic, the last 2 are from a South Carolina Article, but explains the system in a good amount of detail, and can exactly be applied to the coues whitetail as well, as does the scoring sheet in the 3rd link. I hope this helps http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgrecords/bc_scoring_typwhitetail.asp?area=bgrecords&type=Typical+Coues+Whitetail+Deer http://www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/deer/scoring.html http://www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/deer/pdf/ScoreSheet.pdf
