It sounds to me like goats would be the way to go for you, however either borrow or rent a horse for your 70 year old hunting companion. That way he doesn't have to walk in and can save his energy for the hunt. Personally I'd stay away from mules. Too many good horses out there to mess with a mule...IMO.

I've just been lurking the last while but thought I'd check in with you all. I've had a pretty good Fall so far. I've got out hunting Ruff and Blue grouse a few times, tagged out on a nice Mulie buck and last night filled my Sandhill Crane tag. Heres a few pics from the year so far. I still have 2 Sage Grouse tags, antlerless deer and elk tags as well as my general season muzzy elk tag so hopefully I'll have several more pics to share as the season progress's. And thats not counting upland and waterfowl hunting!.

Finally got out after Sage Grouse today. It was a fun hunt but unfortunately my kids couldn't make it. Gunner and I had a blast though, we got up over 40 birds and put 2 nice males in the bag. Unfortunately they were molting or else one of them would have been headed for the Taxidermist.

Thanks. This past weekend didn't go as planned. I had 2 horses decide they were part beaver and ended up eating almost all of a sheet of wafer board. Needless to say this plugged them up so I spent 7 hours walking them around Saturday until the worst of it had passed. Hopefully next weekend goes better...

Thanks again for the kind words. Sage grouse season opens tomorrow. I only get to go out for a couple of hours since the kids have their final soccer games in the morning as well, but hopefully we'll be able to find a few birds.

Thanks everyone, I rarely go out without my kids. Both because I love to have them with me and also because they won't let me out the door without them!

I shot a mulie buck about 12 years ago that had warts all over him. I wasn't sure what the crap it was so I took him into the local DWR office. A biologist came out and cut a couple off to sample but they were just warts like cattle get. I was worried to even touch the thing though...

Thanks everyone. Hopefully we'll have a lot more pics to share in the coming months. I'm in NE Utah near Roosevelt.

As you can see I've been having a blast hunting with my kids this year. I let my kids decide which deer I shot, and I think they did a pretty good job picking the buck. Also having my 2 year old along packing his "Shop Gun" on the bird hunts has been a lot of fun too. I'll post more pics as the season progresses. Sage Grouse season starts on Saturday!

I took my family to the library Saturday and my 6 year old son found a book about a kid and his dad who took a hunting trip to Alaska. I was blown away, I didn't know there were any books like that out there. Turns out theres a series of them. I plan on buying them all since I really like supporting people who support hunting, especially ones who promote kids hunting!!! http://www.littlesportsman.com/

I've been busy with work and hunting and haven't been on as much as I used to but thought I'd give you all a little update on how my fall has been and share a few pics. I ate tag soup on my deer and elk hunts but the birds have been really good this year here in NE Utah. I picked up a few new area's to hunt and they've paid off. I've killed more quail already than I did the last two seasons combined! The ducks have been good too. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed shooting ducks until I took the kids out last week. We've been out every night since. -
Great waterfowl hunting today

Nice picture, looks like a great day. I know they call it Turducken when you stuf a chicken in a duck then the duck in a turkey. You could do something similar to that with your teal, gadwall, and gooses. Then serve it up as "Duck, Duck, Goose". (It sounded funny in my head.... ) -
Glad to see the government finally pulled their heads out of their arses, at least as far as this issue goes. Shutting down those slaughter houses hurt a lot of people, not only those who owned and worked at them.

I'm with you both on that one. I love watching a good cow dog work, or any working dog. But pointing dogs get me all hot and bothered, especially when I know they're working a covey of Valley Quail! -

With a good looking dog like that, good hunting is certainly guaranteed Thats for sure. I wish I could say I made her what she is but she was given to me last year, best free dog I've ever had! I just have a thing for Ugly Dogs I guess... I love my Pointer and will always have one around, but the same goes for the versatiles. Either a GWP, DD, or PP will always be in my kennel as well. -
I drew a limited entry archery elk tag this year up here in NE Utah and since it took so much time and cost so much I decided to buy a compound bow to use so I could have a little edge. I love my longbow but using traditional gear you go in knowing the chance of filling your tag are cut in half. I found a really nice Hoyt Trykon that is a year newer than the one I sold when I went traditional. I'd forgotten how fast these bows are! I also forgot that they'll shoot clean through a tight bale of hay. Guess I'm going to have to fix my shooting set up. I'd also forgotten how heavy compounds are. I don't think my longbow weighs 2lbs. This is my new set-up. 70# '06 Trykon, cobra 5 pin sight, quick tune fall away rest, and 4 arrow hoyt quiver. Shooting 28" 5575 Goldtip carbon arrows. I was thinking about using the Rage 2-blade broadheads, what do you guys think? I used to shoot muzzy's before going to traditional gear but I've heard a lot of good things about Rage and like the idea of the mechanical shooting like my field tips. They way the arrows blow through the hay bales I'm sure it will blow right through a bull too! I shot bigger (fatter) arrows with my old Trykon and didn't get many pass thru's but it always did the job. These Goldtips are smoking fast. I'm going to take it to the archery shop this weekend and have it chrono'd to see just how fast.

One of the guys at the local archery shop where I buy my arrows suggested the tekans. He's actually the one that got me questioning buying Rage. He and his friends all went to them right off and now none of them use them anymore, so I got asking around and got a lot of responses like his. So the decisions not any more difficult...Wish it were as easy as picking my arrows was!!! Pink Zebra Striped with the Nuge's name on them, that was a no brainer.

Thanks for your replies. I looked at the SWHACKER video. Some of the info was interesting, like showing that both the Rage and the Swhacker had better penetration and square inches of wound than the 2 fixed blade broadheads. The only question I have on the Swhacker is if the blades don't deploy until its inside the animal what kind of entry wounds do you have? I know the wings or whatever they are have a single bevel edge but they don't look like they'd cause a very large entry wound. No matter how much damage is caused inside if the entry wound isn't large enough you won't get much of a blood trail unless you get a pass thru. I liked the looks of the Slick Tricks too. I started out shooting a 4 blade broadhead when I was 15 and never had trouble trailing game but after moving to faster bows I never found one that could be tuned so I switched to either a 2 or 3 blade tip.

Nice video.

Some rub off early, I see bucks almost every year that are hard horned during the early part of archery season here in Utah. One thing is if you don't like the velvet you can always have it stripped off and the antlers stained. I had that done to an elk I killed a few years ago, it looks nice. I wanted to keep the velvet since I love velvet antlers but it was already starting to loosen and wouldn't have worked out. Good luck on your hunt!

Nice tailgate picture. Looks like you guys did alright!! -
I had to put my Spanky dog down last June. I still get misty eyed thinking about it. I was the same way with pictures. I have more of him the last year of his life than I had the first 9. Sad really...
