    Another find it

We had seen 30 some elk bed on the shelf of a mountain about 900 yards out. We worked out way up and got within 200 yards when I started picking bushes apart to find the bull so I knew the elk were there but I just caught the eye while scanning.

    Lost elk tag

I got into a pretty good argument this year just trying to get a duplicate hunting license from sportsmans.

    Lost elk tag

I've never heard of a licensed dealer being able to issue a duplicate drawn tag. If you could possibly talk to game and fish on Monday, maybe they will let me pick It up for you on Tuesday before I drive up. Not sure they will be that nice tho.

    Scouting 101

BOOT LEATHER! BOOT LEATHER! BOOT LEATHER! The following isn't meant to knock all the guys that say boot leather but I think this would be a good start to all those first time posts of "drew a tad in (unit) and I've never been there" It's always the same advice but if you're trying to learn a new unit you've never been in I would start by DRIVING! DRIVING! DRIVING! Go drive all the major forest service roads in the unit, learn where your boundaries are, go check out the areas from the "where to hunt" on the G&F site and see what you think about how those areas look. Check all the tanks and Water holes you drive by to see what kind of traffic they are getting. Mark the ones you think look good on your GPS, Mark every where you see the specific game you plan to hunt (male of female). Look at all the different terrains and elevations the unit has to offer and focus on areas that might suit your style better. Mark areas you think would be good glassing spots or an area you might want to walk. A lot of animals can be seen driving the roads and may help you narrow down a general area you want to focus on. Look at maps and mark them up, Google earth, find the canyons, the meadows, clearings, burns, creeks, rivers, mountains, thicker areas that offer bedding spots, open spots that offer feeding, saddles, camping spots, where you see the most people. Basically just go drive around and pay attention to everything. One of the big things In my opinion though is go drive the unit to help you get some what familiar with what you have to work with in that particular unit and see all of your options and then start using the boot leather. Either way it takes a lot of time to really learn a unit but you'll never learn anything until you go take a look see for yourself.

    first ever bear tag ?s

I double checked the regs you're talking about. I believe all those are OTC and you can tell because it doesn't show the number of tags offered in a draw and only the spring hunts have drawn tags.

    first ever bear tag ?s

The over the counter hunts say non-permit in the regs

Is .223 big enough for deer?

I've taken one deer with a 223. 150 yard shot with a 55 grain bullet. Dropped in his tracks.

    hunt savings

I always hoard my change. Can't stand when people just toss change around like a gum wrapper. When I helped my dad move out of his house I picked up over $30 in change off the floor and I pick up every penny I find on the street. Maybe I'm cheap but I currently have $405.16 in just change. No intention of spending it just yet but maybe it will go towards the custom rifle I've been wanting to have built.

Is it against the law to kill my dog

Every mount I've brought home I chase my lab around the house with it while growling and barking. I'll set it down and every time he gets close I'll move it just a bit and it seems to scare him pretty good. I've left them on the floor over night before they get hung and he doesn't go near them.

First go at DIY euro mount

Sounds like a lot of wins In a short amount of time. Bull down, rack on the wall, meat in the freezer and back to work to make that money for you and the boss man!

First go at DIY euro mount

Looks a lot more natural than the one I did. Don't remember exactly what I used on it but it was some kind of glue and it came out way to unnaturally white.
  18. Very cool and a 14 minute response! Can't beat that!

    Would you hunt alone?

I like going solo! I don't have anyone slowing me down or changing my plans. I've taken several people that completely changed my plans because they don't want to walk, they think glassing is boring, they want to go take a nap, they want to sleep in, they want to drive roads, they are hungry, they don't want to sit, they talk too loud, they slam doors, they light up a cigarette, they sound like a herd of elephants when walking, they don't want to make a varmint call, they would prefer a motel, they drink the whole time, they don't want to go out in the rain, they get cold....... I think you get the idea. Solo is the way to go in my opinion. If something goes not as planned then you are the only one to blame. The only thing you really lose is a spotter and conversation and maybe someone doing half the work around camp but most times people don't help with camp chores either.

    Arizona elk hunters

Seems like they could of put out a lot of road closed signs since 2012 when they started this but I haven't seen one yet. One of the roads I like that is closed has even been graded since 2012 but still no sign. It's like they're baiting me.

    Arizona elk hunters

The way I've read it some units are open to game retrieval and some are not. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3803560.pdf Doesn't want to let me post the paragraph but it's the 10th bullet point down on the link above. I have not had to pack anything down a road yet but my brother hit a bull down a few miles of perfectly good road that we had walked into but we ended up never finding the bull. (Not trying to open the "another lost animal" debate)
