Nice Amanda....there are some great pointers in there.I especially like'd the greatest spread measurement with the square.Daniel
-
Just like on the Boone and Crockett web site they have a scoring sheet system, that when you put your measurements in there it totals it up for you.Pretty nice. Have you thought of getting one here for the shed hunting forum? Only thing about B&C was you have to have a measurement from both sides, and while measuring some sheds last night of my coues, all I did was put zero's as the measurements since it was on antler. And it worked.Daniel

Bears and Trail Cams
Daniel in Ak replied to standman's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I do have a problem with bears eating..............my dog food out of my barrel hahahaha! And they do that when Im not in the tree.Guess Im going to have to start using cams over my bait stations. Yeah! That would be cool to get a wolf on the cam.....WHy I never thought of that before? I have a co-woker who has problems with bears eating everything they put out.Last year they flew out quite a few times putting out 55 gallon drums full of gear for the up coming baititng season, anyhow they did not go back for three weeks before they could legally start and when they got to there cache the bears ate everything tore everything up,punctured all there gas cans, including the ones hung in the tree's.It was totally wreck as he put it. And then this year the same fella and a friend blazed there own trail in with chain saws and fourwheelers and six wheelers, anyhow after setting up camp the 1st day the next morning the hiked up the ridge to start glassing bears in the open high country, after topping out in the high country on the cam side he looked back at camp and noticed something wrong, put the spotting scope on it and dang! Two hours later back in camp as they left a bear or bears tore the camp up his six wheel polaris was moved thirty yds from where it was parked all thetires on the bikes had flats, and one tire on the polaris had 33 puncture holes.Tent was shredded etc...they where gone three days and the entire time was trying to get there gear back out.No shelter no food.Bears there so fun up here.Daniel -

Daniel in Ak posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
And I copied my old post,so it's all here in one post for you fellas. I know there's a bunch of you fellas out there hunting Coues now,and I thought I'd help fire you up a little. This bad boy which I did not harvest was harvested by a friend in Nov of 1996.The thing was I put him one that should have gone about 115,and this fella was supposed to be one canyon over. This one has 13 scorable points, and at the time I was helping another friend track his biggest Coues he's ever shot. And when he finally got a hold of me,he wanted me to accompany him to check him in,since I was nice enough to share my knowledge. I scored everything and came up with 143.Wish I had my measurements I took. The split eyeguard is just so cool! Heck the entire rack is awesome, short on top but nice. Sad news was the night before he was to take him to Tucson to have it scored, his little girl knocked it off from the top of the microwave and broke the skull plate Ok! Bullwidgeon here is another buck that I put another friend on.This was also his biggest Coues to date. This one in-fact was the smallest that year that I help'd anyone harvest for Coues. He went just over 90 This one was harvested over on what us local call Hwy 101,dont ask lol! Anyhowhead out of S.V.towards Hereford and go to Coronado and go over the pass like your going to Parker Canyon Lake. Look on a map and when you finally desend off the Mtn basically there is one road that shoots straight into Mexico, and brother trust me you might miss the marker like I did and I came out in Nogales,Mexico..........that's a whole 'nuther story. Once the road gets to the border it parallels it.Along your way in keep an eye out to the left/East and you'll see a windmill, you can park along here and wait in the truck for deer to come for water,or go to the east side of it and glass the drainage that the deer come out of. Trust me there are Coues down in there. This one was shot late in the afternoon, and my buddy actually got out of the truck and snuck towards to cut down on the shot distance.I want to say he shot it over 300 yards away???? I dont rememeber. I hope ya'll can make out that he's a 3x4 not counting eye guards.Yeah! He was excited and my future wife help'd pack this one out and she' brought it into our livingroom gotta love her.Daniel -

TAM ya hit the nail on the head, them bears sure do scout you out. Had my best friend and brother fly up from Arizona this past August for a caribou hunt and to make this short,I saw a grizz,I lit out after the griz,I walked by the grizz, where and when I dunno, all I know is she was practically behind me standing on her hind legs staring at me.............like mmmmm! mmmmm! that thing looks good. Well while she charged me she covered approximately 70 yards before I shot her and that was in a seconds, man them bears can move, and did I mention she was about 150 yds off before she charged? Yep up here ya never know and ya gotta keep your eye out.And More D come on up,you'll see bears up here.KNow a guy this year that shot a 7ft grizz on his way to go fishing, crossed the hi-way right in front of him.Now thats being in the right spot at the right time.Wanna go fishin? Daniel

Hahahahahahahahaha! Ya'll are just way to funny. I call it "butt stokin",he called it "In dire need to keep the pig away from me",hahahhaa! Sounds funny but he was all reaction didnt have time to think. I need to come back home and guide ya .270 I have a pig a few years back that was young, had a white head and four white stockings, have it on video. I wish i knew how to put a video clip on a post and show it to you all. And TAM this winter is just begining here,no strange thought's but gimme a month Daniel

ya'll are getting me fired up about pigs now dad-gum-it! sure wish I was back home to call in some pigs. And hey .270 you dont need no guide for pig's,just squall on a call and they come a runnin' ya just gotta keep your eyes on the country as once my best friend and I where out callin' dogs either at Cienega or the Bennet Ranch,oh! bot how my memeory is fading anyhow Im watching this pig come running in my buddy had his head down getting into the calling,I tried throwing pebbles at him. WEll I sat back and thought this is gonna be interesting.Hahahahaha! that ol' boar come a snortin and a runnin and the next thing you know my buddy is a cussin' something fierce and actually butt stroked the dang pig. That sucker actuall made a .360 circle around him and ran off the same way he came in. And ya'll seriously wanna know what I was doing? I was laid over on my side holding my gut,oh! momma my sides hurt! Daniel

Another Huachuca Mtn buck
Daniel in Ak replied to Daniel in Ak's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
yeah! Bret, guess I need to find a new server.Do you have idea on where you want to go yet? Cochise County is getting a god awefull amount of hunters these days, hunting or staying close to the road systems. I've found some real nice bucks up high in the Whetstones also.Try above Kartchner Caverns and more North or better yet the North end and the Northwest end of the Whetstones. I forget the name of the road and ranch, but I'd come in from I-10 a few miles up from the Sierra Vista exit 358? I'f I remember, man! that's sad and I grew up there.Anyhow I'd go in there and hike into towards the very North end and find bucks.Mainly I went in for 'yotes. Funny as I never shot a Coues, but I always kept and eye out on them.Oh! dont go into the Canelo Hills area.Heavy traffic and small bucks.I mean like basket bucks in there. Hope Im able to help out.Im racking my brains here trying to remember where all them deer are Daniel -

I dont understand Amanda. In my pre views the pic's show up like now.ANd When I post they are there. But I re-checked my first post ( Big Huachuca Buck) and nothing but that dad-gum red x. Anyhow here are the two pic's to go with the post above.Daniel -
Unfortunatly my hunting is done here in Alaska for the year,so I plan on watching what you guys post.Ya'll talking about the Chiricahuas got my blood boiling.I have forgotten more back roads and places to hunt in Cochise County than you guys care to know. But here is a little spot for ya'll.South of I-10 on the North east area of the Chiricahuas, thats the East side of the Mountain and make sure your North of Rucker Lake(yeah I know thats on the other side. This is a good area and heck on packing due to lack of roads and trails.but the deer are there.Oh! and did I mention bears?,and Lions? yeah! keep your eyes open.Good Luck ya'll.Daniel

hey Bullwidgeon and 111,yes it almost looked non-typical.ALl the way up to his G-2's he had knarly bumps, was way cool!.Them Huachuca bucks have great gene's and there main beams have great curve to them. Not to mention they flatten out and turn over near the tips, that's a most distinct trait from there, but go into the Canelo Hills and man they get tiny, but you will get cross breeds as I call them. Bullwidgeon,I'll post more bucks from 35A or what I call Huachuca bucks.More than Likely you cant hunt there, but how much hiking do you want to do? I might be able to point you in the right direction.Daniel
