I was checking the NNDFW website and noticed that the Navajo Nation has aroun 50 leftover tags for the any elk hunts in units 13 and 14. has anyone ever hunted these areas? I have frequented unit 16 and there are some good bulls in there but no tags are even offered unless you purchase a unit-wide hunt.

watched a small 5x5 with 38 cows yesterday morning he was bugling like it was late sept. in unit 1 NE of Greer

Thanks for the input guys...didnt expect pictures, those are some decent animals! I am going to attempt to get home in a couple weeks and head up to Gallup to check out that area...and see if it is worth the cash! -
Bill Quimby wrote: "It is amazing how many types of wildlife live along it -- from bears and beavers to elk, mule and white-tailed deer, turkeys, antelope, and lion, blue grouse, bald eagles, and every type of waterfowl found in Arizona. Years ago, when AZGFD was trying to introduce them to Apache County, I even saw California Valley quail and ringneck pheasants downstream from South Fork." The california Valley Quail are still there(alot of them too) in the Richfield valley on the TEP powerplant rd.

listen to what the elk are doing, it could be silent for the most part, or they could be going off up there, in which case you will have some luck calling in smaller bulls. Personally i think calling is a waste of time , you rarely have the big bulls come in unless its a perfect situation. best way in my opinion is to scout the area well, find the routes leading to/from bedding/feeding areas, and be there an hour before dawn breaks preferrably with the sun at your back. stay off the edges, dont get too close so you can angle in and cut them off. Ive had the best odds doing this and may only ever bugle to locate, thats it. watch the wind, cover scents and sprays are BS, find wallows and sit them mid-day if hot....good luck! if its anything like last yr. up there it should be great.

By Amazon.com....sick of my wife ordering crap on there! hope the next hit is AZGFD!

Sorry guys had to be the first to post a BS CC hit thread this year...Last year my card was hit on 3/30, just saw it while doing mounds of tax paperwork! fun...should be finished by the time results are up!
-
FInally came together this morning at first light, was able to shoot him at 50 yards, and then shoot him again at 75 yards. He didnt even know he was hit on the first shot (which wasd a good hit). both arrows a couple inches apart right behind the shoulder. Also found an arrowhead while following his bloodtrail! Two for two in 2011/2012....probably wont see another tag for quite a while!
-
Thanks guys and i agree with you on the arrowhead keychain!
-
Bill's advice +1....and try to get away from the main big lake roads. After i killed on my elk hunt last year i watched 5 different hunters go in after the same buck right off the highway....didnt look like much fun!

Not looking for scouting information, would just like to know if any of you have had this tag and if so, how was your hunt and the quality of animals? I drew this tag as my third choice and have always wanted to hunt it, plan on doing a good amount of scouting and am looking forward to only 74 other tag holders being in the unit, unlike my unit 1 bull tag last year with what seemed like a hunter behind every tree.
-
Thank you! I dont mind, it does seem a little off to draw a third choice on a hunt like this, i wish i could remember or find out of i messed up and actually put this as a second choice.
-
I was in your same boat and got my first bull tag at 29...then drew this 3B tag the very next year....it'll happen for ya! Alot of good information guys, thank you all, very excited to get some scouting in and cover some ground.

ok....anyways....anyone else have any input about the hunt itself? thanks for the input Joe and nice bull!
