I hope I haven't hurt your chances of selling your rifle, 1uglydude. It's just that something happened recently to make me realize we're not immortal and I don't need another gun. Bill Quimby

Sorry, this is not meant to disparage your rifle. Lots of hunters prefer stocks made of plastic, fiberglass, rubber or whatever. I'm just not one of them. Bill Quimby

Thanks for the response. I intend to replace my stolen .270 but I don't want a plastic stock. Bill Quimby

Do you have the walnut stock for it? Bill Quimby

I've not heard of a toll booth proposed for the White Mountains. Does anyone have details or rumors to share? Bill Quimby

http://www.chuckhawks.com/6-5-284_6-5RemMag.htm Hawks and I agree. (Be sure to read the last paragraph.) My little 6.5 Remington Magnum is a Model 700 with a 24-inch barrel. It's a great rifle. Recoil is negligible, it shoots flat, and it has killed everything I've asked it to kill. Bill Quimby

A great video, and congratulations to the young hunter and everyone who helped him. It's something the boy will never forget. Bill Quimby

Lark: Great photo of those cliff carp. Near Morenci? A friend in Crosby Acres outside Greer had one walk up to his porch earlier this week. I had to stop and let six of those silly things walk across the blacktop when I drove into Springerville yesterday for groceries. Bill Quimby

Wikipedia has an interesting description and history of the breed. From what it says, it sounds like you have the perfect dog for a hunting family who can spend some time with it. Bill Quimby

There's an oak tree in the Santa Ritas that has grown around part of an old car's spoked wheel. I've forgotten which canyon it's in, but maybe someone here has seen and photographed it. Bill Quimby

Oops! 1965 was 50 years ago. That's the trouble with being older than dirt. It's hard to believe, but I guess I was there before someone hung that antler. Bill Quimby

Lark: The only time I was at Saunder's cabin was about 1965 or '67. We drove in from Honeymoon in my 1947 Jeep CJ2A. The road wasn't washed out yet, but there were places where it was tilted at such extreme angles it was downright scary. I obviously wasn't very observant because I would have remembered seeing an antler in a tree if I had seen it. Bill Quimby

Too bad about its Tupperware stock. I've been looking to replace my stolen .22-250. Bill Quimby

BEAR VISITED OUR CABIN
billrquimby replied to billrquimby's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Right on, Lark. It's a lot more fun to wake up with wolves, bears, elk and deer in the yard up here than the puny little bobcats and javelinas we see around our place in Tucson in the winter. No tag needed. I have no plans to kill another bear. I already have two rugs, and there's not a big enough gun to make me eat one of those greasy things. Bill Quimby -
Had some excitement at first light yesterday. Five does and a small buck mule deer were feeding on the wild roses that grow along the edge of our cabin's deck when I got up to make coffee. They were just ten feet from our kitchen window. This is not unusual, because we see deer all the time at the cabin, but what happened next was. The deer suddenly jerked their heads up, then bolted. Seconds later a very large black bear walked around the side of my truck and up to where the deer had been, then followed them down my driveway and into the meadow across the road from the cabin. We've probably seen fewer than a dozen bears at the cabin over the past 41 years, but this was only the second time one got this close to the house. Bill Quimby

The years I watched my daughter and two grandkids growing up were the happiest of my life. My daughter is 57 now, my granddaughter is 31, and my grandson will be 27 soon. I love all three dearly, but there is nothing like having a child crawl onto your lap and give you a hug and say, "I love you daddy (or granddaddy)." I must admit that my wife and I spoiled all three. Bill Quimby

I definitely am not a cowboy, but I had horses and a mule that I hunted with when I was younger. They took me places I never would have gone on foot and packed out the game I shot. My horses and mule would spot game long before I did, but I'd have to get some distance from the horses before I would shoot. The mule paid no attention to gunfire. I'd jump off her, pull my rifle out of the scabbard and rest it over the saddle, and she would hold her breath and stand perfectly still until I fired. She packed every lion, deer, elk and javelina that I loaded on her, but she refused to have anything to do with a bear. She was a lot smarter than I was. I'd let her know where I wanted to go and give her free rein and she'd find the best way up or down a ridge or through brush. Bill Quimby

Happy birthday, Casey. Sorry I missed seeing you and Scotty at the SCI Arizona dinner. My pseudo-gout (a form of arthritis in my feet) was acting up I had trouble getting around the room. Bill Quimby

40th Annual AzSCI Banquet in Tucson July 11th.
billrquimby replied to cmc's topic in Conservation Group Events
It was the first SCI Arizona Chapter banquet I've attended in at least thirty years, and I was amazed at the changes that have come about over the years. I attended the first three or four banquets after the chapter was formed, and they all were formal events that drew only a hundred or so people. The huge banquet room at La Ventana was full of people Saturday night, and everything seemed to be running smoothly, for which the chapter's volunteers should be congratulated. I enjoyed seeing Bobby Boido, TJ and Peg, and others again, and finally got to meet Amanda and Ernesto. The food was first-class and I had a great time. I even won a handgun. Thank you, Amanda, for inviting me. Bill Quimby -

How far is too far of a shot?

Couldn't open the attachment. How about pasting the text into this thread? Bill Quimby -
I hunted deer in Illinois years ago when only a non-resident license was needed. Trouble was, I had to use a shotgun with a rifled slug. The buck I shot jumped and ran off. We tracked him about 500 yards to a fence I was told I couldn't cross, even to recover a deer. I never hunted in that state again. -- Bill Quimby
