Thanks for the great information on 27. I've packed in for elk and set up camp east of Bear Mountain in years past. I think it was about about a 3 to 4 hour mule ride providing you had no wrecks. There was an old corral and a nice spring there and I'm thinking if we hunted south of that area it might be good country for coues. That would put it about 10 miles east of Strayhorse and a couple miles west of the NM border. That country had a pretty good elk herd and a lot of bear and I'm thinking far enough away except for hunters on horseback or some crazed young-buck that has a strong back and a good set of legs. Horseback is stickly transportation. They're noisy enough to push game before you see them or you can't get off fast enough to get set up for a shot before they're out of sight. Patience and glassing is the same. Thanks for you help.

nmmuleman replied to yotebuster's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
I like it-hadnt thought of that-your right though-have to annoy the **** out of them tocut thier own illegal lock -
Thanks for info, will be aware as I scout and move thru area, is illegal trafic higher in winter, summer or does it stay constant year round, do you cable your AtV up be fore leaving it so its there when you get back or have there been many issues with that? I have always cabled my atv to a tree so that its tied wheree i left it-habit i got from my mules I guess. If its not tied down asume whatever left on atv may be gone when you get back

Checkerboard land access
nmmuleman replied to yotebuster's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
in new mexico, I dont worry about roads unless they are posted, seems like they(private landowners) do a pretty good job if they want to post thier land, legally- state law requires they have to have a sign every 250'. Bigger problem-especially in Gila is a few rouge outfitters trying to lock public gates to keep public hunters locked out.I have run into this on 3 occasions-where they have locked gates on forest service roads, a good topo, gps and bolt cutters solved this issue- -
Thanks, will stop in and check out pictures, am going get down and do some scouting in next couple of weeks, will check outthat area you mentioned

Checkerboard land access
nmmuleman replied to yotebuster's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
with regards to "cutting across the corners" on checkboard land in NM, that is considered trespassing and you can and will be cited if the private landowner or outfitter who has it leased makes a fuss. The reason I have been given by game wardens is that all 4 corners come together and while theroretically you step from public to public-you also step over private and that is trepasssing-it has been held up in court in NM. We have tried to get NM G&F to amend law but no sucess-landowners and outfitters have a lot of clout here-look at our tag allocation system I have known several people who tried to navigate checkerboard and were cited by NM game and fish personel- this policy has allowed milions of public arces to remained tied up and landlocked here in NM. -
nice buck, good to see what one looks like on the ground
