Imr 3031 will work awesome and probably give some of the best groups and velocity but is horribly temp sensitive. Imr 4064 should also give good results as it is very close to Varget as far as burn rate goes and far more stable than 3031.

Great looking gun. I would stick with bullet weights above 70 grains to maximize the calibers potential. With bullet weights 70 grains and under your not really doing anything different than the 223 as the 22 cal bullets will have a higher b.c. from being longer and sleeker and will retain energy and velocity better down range. The 85 game king would be great coues medicine.

Have you looked at the 6.5 Grendel? Now thats a sweet setup for the AR platform. Better velocity, b.c. and sectional densities than the 6.8. I have a buddy that shot a coues last year at 500 yards with the 123 Amax and it dropped like a wet turd.

what bullet should i try first for .270
STOMP442 replied to jcarter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
130s always seem to shoot best for me in the 270. I would go with a 130 berger vld set 25 thou from the lands or right at maximum mag length. The sierra game king would be my 2nd choice. -
What are your preferred gun cleaning solvents and oils?
STOMP442 replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Gun slick foaming bore cleaner is a one stop shop. Spray it in and let sit at least a couple hours and wipe it out. It gets it all, powder and copper fouling. -
Custom build. What caliber would you go with?
STOMP442 replied to briant_az's topic in Long Range Shooting
The 6.5-06 I built had a 26" barrel and with 49.5 grains of H4350 I was getting 2960fps and half inch groups at 200 yards. Very sweet rig and very hard to beat. The recoil is mild and the performance is top notch. It can be beat by the heavy 7s and 30s like 308Nut mentioned. But it takes a lot more powder and recoil to do it. I would hunt anything on this continent with it and wouldn't blink an eye about it. -
Well I wish I had a nice big buck to write about but this will have to do. After three long days of hunting without even seeing a buck It sure beats tag soup any day. My brother Trent found this buck for me early on the 28th with an excellent pair of 20 power Stiener binoculars. He was feeding up and away from us and we knew we would never have a chance to get any closer to him before he topped out and disappeared. So we made the decision to set up where we were for a long shot. My first shot hit right at his feet and after a quick adjustment I was able to center up and send a 140 grain Hornady Amax home. The morning was perfect with only a whisper of wind at my end I held on the front of his shoulder hoping for it to drift just behind the shoulder for a double lung shot.. Turns out it drifted a touch more than that, the bullet entered at the 2nd to last rib but because of his angle exited 3 or four ribs forward of that clipping both lungs and hitting the liver. The buck humped up took about five steps and fell dead. I still cant believe the shot but the 6.5-284 sure got it done.

Brass problems
STOMP442 replied to galiuro mountain man's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I had three firings on it doing load development and come ups and it seemed just as good as the first time. Primer pockets were still good and tight. -

STOMP442 replied to briant_az's topic in Long Range Shooting
The 6.5-06 and 6.5x284 are essentially the same thing. Their case capacities are almost identical and load data can even be interchanged between the two. That being said and having built and load developed for both I like the 6.5-06 the best. It seems to be slightly more efficient and brass cost is considerably less since all you have to do is neck up or down from either 25-06, 270 or 30-06. Velocities of 2950 plus should be easily attainable with a 140 bullet and will provide much better wind drift and energy numbers at long range over a 30-06 unless a 200 grain bullet is used. -
DIY Fiberglass Stock Bedding
STOMP442 replied to massamino's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
If its a plastic stock I don't recommend epoxy it don't stick real well to the plastic, under recoil it will pop loose. I like to use steel stick found at any wall mart. Its a putty that works real well on plastic and sets up harder than Chinese algebra in just a few minutes. Bedding is actually pretty easy the trick to is release agent. -
Brass problems
STOMP442 replied to galiuro mountain man's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I know hornady brass had its problems in the past but I have been messing with a 6.5 creedmoor with hornady brass and it seemed fine. They even weighed out well as far as volume goes. -
Burris signature zee rings are the way to go. They come with plastic inserts that secure and center the scope evenly so there is no need to lap. They also make additional inserts that can adjust the cant of the scope up to 40 moa much like a canted base but much cheaper around 8 bucks instead of 40 for the base. Edit to add that they make dovetail as well as weaver style rings.

Anyone have a Cooper rifle in 6.5x284? Looking for best grouping ammo
STOMP442 replied to az300wby's topic in Long Range Shooting
I just worked up a load today using reloader 17 just to try it and it worked really really good. 49.0 grains was shooting one hole groups with 140 amax at 100. Smallest group measured .186 and the biggest measured .214. These were 5 shot groups. -
Which rifle for a youth hunter?
STOMP442 replied to SteveKDC's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
After doing some quick calcs using hodgdon data with a 25-06 running a berger 115 at 3050 and a 7mm-08 running a 140 Berger at 2850 they are pretty much identical at 1000 yards, only difference is about 100 ft pounds of energy in favor of the heavier 140 bullet and about 25 inches flatter trajectory for the 25-06. At 500 yards trajectory and drift are within a few inches and the same 100 pounds of energy in favor of the 7-08. -
Mine really like 24.5 grains of 4064 and a 52 grain berger. 3 shots you could cover with your thumb nail.

Which rifle for a youth hunter?
STOMP442 replied to SteveKDC's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
250 savage is perfect for small kids with plenty of punch and less recoil than a 243. A 115 grain berger at 2850 with the recoil of a 22-250 is hard to beat and it does a number on coues and anything else for that matter. -
how much is 223 brass worth???
STOMP442 replied to Big Browns's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Might be better off just taking down to the recycling joint. If you decide to sell, it may be worth your while to at least sort it by headstamp. -
Check your PM box I can help you out.

Action or donor rifle $300, Custom barrel, $265 - $350, Stock depending on what you want can be expensive but a nice Boyds laminate can be had for $100 Trigger if you get a model with an accutrigger can be as cheap as a $20 spring to bring the weight down as low as 10 oz or a rifle basix for $85 or SSS for $90. That brings the total to around $750 so there is still a little wiggle room for a fancier stock or higher cost barrel. The Savages will shoot right there with any custom Remington any day of the week. Just ask the Savage F class team. The savages are very easy to build on and they are just as true as any Remington because of their floating bolt head. Head over to savage shooters forum and poke around and look at their vendors for prices and after market options. I have built a number of Savage rifles for hunting and benchrest shooting and have never had one run over a grand.
-
Just because the load data mentions a certain bullet doesnt mean you have to use that bullet. as long as the weights are the same or nearly the same i.e. 165 or 168 you should be fine. Start low and work up.
-
Build it on Savage. There seems to be more room in a Savage Short Action and it can be custom built to your specs for under a grand with a premium match grade barrel. Plus you can do it all your self and not have to pay a smith.

IMR 4064 should give good results as well.
-
I bought twin marlins one in 22 mag and one in 17hmr.I sold the 17 and kept the 22 mag. Way more thump on rabbits and other critters and the littlest whisper of wind doesn't blow it around like the 17. And the ammo is way cheaper than the hmr too.

You guys need to get out more. That's a beautiful rifle in one of the sweetest calibers ever.

7mm Mag has much better ballistics than the .300. A higher B.C. means more down down range energy flatter trajectory and less wind drift. A 7 mag with 168 bergers is hard to beat and will kill absolutely anything you ever want it to.
