The 130 berger classic hunter with a b.c. of .497 and launched upwards of 3150+ is very hard to beat. The advantage of this purchase is that it is a savage. If you end up not liking the caliber its very easy to change it to something you prefer.

I never have before but I did on the last hunt I helped out with. I will never do it without gloves again.

Incredible Shot on First Coues Buck

All the credit goes to the steiners for that. They are by far the most impressive binoculars on the planet in my opinion. -
I don't think you will be disappointed with the purchase. Sounds like a great deal on the rifle and it is a great cartridge that is more than capable for elk.

7mm rem mag load for nosler long range accubonds
STOMP442 replied to westernhunter23's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Still just a hole. Not exactly what I would expect for "rapid expansion" and still nothing different than the berger would do. I agree the topic has been hijacked and I apologize. My points have been made and I'm done here. -

7mm rem mag load for nosler long range accubonds
STOMP442 replied to westernhunter23's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Well like I said 9 times out of 10 the berger shoots better for me. Just so happens my 6.5-284 much preferred the Amax over the berger as far as accuracy goes and why I used it. It also didn't expand much and just poked a hole but the hole was in the right place. I don't believe it did anything different than the berger would have if it in fact failed to expand. -

STOMP442 replied to westernhunter23's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Funny you mention the Amax and bullets that should be used for what they are designed in the same sentence as those are stated directly by the manufacturer not to be used for hunting. I know they work well, I have killed animals with them and seen plenty killed with them. But I still shoot what shoots best in my rifles and 9 times out of 10 its the Berger. After all its about putting the bullet where it belongs more than anything. A quality shot in the vitals will produce a clean kill at any range every time regardless of bullet choice. -

Like I've said before. The 1800 number is probably a safe recommendation and does not guarantee that the bullet will not work below that. I have personally seen them work extremely well at long range and below that threshold. -

Everything I have read about them has them working very similar to the berger bullets. Funny how this seems to be ok now that noslers name is on the box for the nosler guys. -
Wow what a buck!

Opinions on Phil Roberston suspension from A&E
STOMP442 replied to longbowpilot's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
What does that have to do with the topic? And what makes you think there dirty and dont bathe? There beards?? Did they mention something on the show about not having personal hygiene I missed? Either way, like it or not, not everyone(not referring to you Stomp) is ok with other people liking the same sex and it doesnt make them "vile" cause they feel that way. My eyes tell me they need to bathe. Have you seen these guys? Everyone of them look like they haven't seen a bar of soap in months. And yes phil did mention in one of the episodes that he doesn't bathe for long periods of time. I have no problems with beards I happen to be a pretty big ZZ Top fan. I also happen to agree with Phils expressed opinions 100%. -
Opinions on Phil Roberston suspension from A&E

My opinion is that each and every one of them duck dynasty yahoos need to take a bath. Especially that dirty dad and uncle of theirs.I like the show and think it has great values and provides good family entertainment but I have a hard time celebrating people that don't wash their donut on a daily basis. I also wouldn't be surprised that this was not a calculated move to open doors for a spin off or to get out of contract with A&E to make more money on another network. My money is on the show going away and Willie spin off coming down the pipe. -
Not this fall but I called a herd in while varmint hunting last year. Been trying to find them again since with no luck.

Berger bullets for hunting
STOMP442 replied to hunter1026's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The 6.5s penetrate really well to begin with and when you don't hit a bone on a deer that's only 12" wide at the shoulder there's not a lot there for the bullet to work on. I always aim for bone and the bergers have no problem penetrating then causing massive damage. Keep using them. -
As long as you practice with the 180 partition it will be fine. When shooting long range wind is the key factor to worry about. If you practice and know your wind holds with the partition it will be fine. There are definitely bullets out there that do much better in the wind than the partition and provide a lot less wind drift. Personally I like the bergers and you will be hard pressed to find a bullet with a higher b.c. that will deliver more energy less drop and less wind and above all more terminal performance on game.

I also have to stress that as great and wonderful as technology is nothing beats real world experience, data and a log book. These programs will get you close and will definitely get you on the gong at long ranges but is rarely centered up. Small adjustments up or down by a click or two are needed to fine tune in most cases.

Yeah litz mentions that the .512 number is not a constant but works most of the time on most bullets. The other important thing to input is the scope height. I see a lot of people just keep the standard 1.5" and call it good. Scope height makes a big difference in the calculations.

The g7 form factor fits better with most modern day long range bullets having a boat tail and longer ogive. If you know the g7 it will produce a more accurate drop chart as it is not nearly as velocity dependant as a G1. Nosler lists a G1 based b.c. and is generally exaggerated by quite a bit. A quick easy way to estimate G7 b.c. is to take the weight of a bullet divided by 7000 to get its weight in pounds. Then divide that number by the dia of the bullet squared and then divide that number by the bullets form factor. The standard g7 form factor is 1 but some bullets depending on what you are shooting like bergers and Amax have a slightly lower drag profile than the standard in certain calibers so I like to use 0.95 when I am unsure. This will give you the G7 b.c or at least pretty close to it. To find the G1 you simply divide the G7 by .512 For example I will use the sierra 155gr match king in 308 which I know is almost identical to the g7 standard. It has a published G1 b.c of .450 155/7000 = .02214 .02214 / .308×2 = .233 (G7) .233/.512 = .455 (G1) As you can see this comes out pretty dang close to the published .450 bc You can do this for most bullets to find a pretty close estimate in actual b.c. the trickiest part about it is the form factor. All of this data as well as the form factors for most long range bullets can be found in Bryan litz book applied ballistics for long range shooting. Outstanding resource of information and well worth the 50 bucks.

Plink may not be the right word with this cartridge as ammo is pretty pricey at about $17 a box. My local Walmart has some on the shelf but no rifles to go with it.
