    Barrel Question

Send it off to shaw for fluting or purchase a new fluted barrel from them and have them install it. By far the cheapest route.

    Dial Drop Determination Questions?

The best way to determine drops and turret values is by shooting and lots of it. Practice at the ranges you intend to shoot and practice in adverse conditions and varying elevations to better understand what you and your rifle are doing. Ballistic calculators are great but they are only as good as the information input into them. I will never trust a calculator over my proven data and drop charts developed at the range and in the field. As far as B.C.s go berger has the most accurate and scientific data available of any bullet manufacturer. They use multiple chronographs acoustic sensors and radar over 600 yards to determine actual bcs of their bullets. They also use the G7 standard which is a much more consistent drag model for todays modern bullet designs. The actual bc can have slight changes depending on elevation and weather conditions but for the most part are very consistent. Sierra also provides very good information but does so using the G1 standard models which is velocity dependent. Hornady I will admit has come along way in their BC information especially in thier Amax and Match bullet lines but can at times be a little exaggerated but not by much and depending on the bullet. Nosler just likes to blow smoke and lots of it, their ballistic testing is limited to 100 yards and pushed at the highest velocities possible which doesnt amount to good data at all for the average hunter / shooter. My opinion on a custom dial system vs the standard moa knob is this. If you changes bullets or loads at anytime your custom dial is pretty much useless and you will have to spend the money on a new one. The moa knob allows you the freedom to change at any time or for any situation by simply making a new drop chart. Its just as easy to dial up moa as it is to dial up to a yardage on a turret.

    remington 700 sendero nightmare

Have you tried using a windage adjustable base and the Burris zee rings? You might be able to take up enough to at least get it zeroed and the plastic inserts won't allow the scope to pinch and bind. Worth a shot what's another 60 bucks. Worse case it doesn't work and you sell the rings and bases in the classifieds and get your money back.

    jetboils

I've tried that too but it never seems to stay lit for me. The heet has never given me trouble once its lit and why I prefer it.

    jetboils

I picked up an aluminum one on eBay for about five bucks and it works awesome. Fill it half way with heet and light it, less than ten minutes later you have boiling water. Best part is that it only weighs like 3oz and fits in a small pocket.

Are you shooting from the lead sled pictured? If so ditch the sled and use a rest and or bags. Sleds are known for causing issue with scopes especially when mounted on magnum caliber rifles. If that doesn't help things I would switch to some burris signature zee rings to eliminate any question with rings or alignment issues.
  8. H1000, Retumbo, Ramshot Magnum and H4831 should all give good results. Ramshot Hunter has worked well for me in a 300wsm with a 168 match king as well. Hunter and 4831 are fairly close burn rate wise. Accurateshooter.com has some good articles and data on the 7wsm http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/7mm/

    26 Nosler

Not sure why people think fireforming is such a chore. Fire form while doing barrel break in and you kill two birds with one stone. I generally break in for 50 rounds so when im done I have 50 cases ready to go and if I need more I wait until its time to clean it then fire form a few more to foul in the barrel. Works out pretty good. The 6.5-06 ackley is a great cartridge I have one and love it. I am getting 3180 out of mine with a 140 berger and only have to use 59 grains of powder to do it. The 26 Nosler can beat it im sure but not by much and it will have to burn quite a bit more powder to do it. There are quite a few 6.5s available that meet or exceed the 26 Nosler performance but dont have the backing of a major company that will allow joe smo to buy factory ammo. For those of us who reload and enjoy working with wildcat chamberings the 26 isnt all that exciting. But the guy that goes to the store looking for the best hot rod on the shelf the 26 looks pretty dang good.

    270 set up

270 will work fine especially for deer out to that range. There are some great bullet choices available now for the 270 that make it a good performer out to 800.The most important thing for making a long range shot is practice and good optics. If the load is good and shoots sub moa out to that distance I don't think you will have a problem. I prefer the scope to just have standard moa adjustments rather than the custom dial option just for the simple fact that I might change bullets or loads at some point and not have to buy a new turret to match. Bottom line is putting the bullet where it needs go. If you can do this with the 270 it will kill anything you point it at.

    Cal. Question

Worst suggestion ever Tell that to the elk. Sure beats a sharp stick shot from a string and people kill elk that way all the time. Look at the ballistics for the 250 savage running a 115 berger at 2800 fps and you will find that it has plenty of pop for any distance kids will be shooting.

    Cal. Question

My nephew shot an elk this past season with a 250 savage I put together for him. Less kick than a 243 and it did the job no problem with a 115 berger. 260 is also a good choice.

    26 Nosler

Yep barrel life should be short but probably more than adequate when used as a hunting rifle. Shouldn't be any worse than these large RUM cartridges that people like so much. Just makes me wonder why they wouldn't opt to produce a high BC 140 grain bullet when they had to know they had this cartridge in the works. I will pick a 140 over a 130 every time no matter how inflated the BC is.

134 Yard Archery Shot on 6x6

how many bulls do you suppose got drilled this year and no one even checked for blood because they didnt look hit and was too far across a canyon to go check? thats a question for a different thread though Well I know one in 22n. Got shot at over and someone smoked a 6x5 on my sons hunt. Ran right in front of us and died 100yds from us over the ridge. No one ever came and looked for the bull. They hit it a little back but still had a blood trail. Just makes me angry when you shoot something and not sure if you hit or not and still don't go look for blood. Sad story you will be seeing a lot more of that with everyone getting into long range. ive seen a bull take a .300 weatherby at 200 yards to the power plant and not even flinch. walk across a deep canyon to look for blood, aint nobody got time for that. What about all the game that's hit poorly with an arrow to run off and die a slow painful death and never found. There are poor examples on both sides yet only the long range hunters get the label of being unethical. Both disciplines require practice to become proficient and as long as someone puts in the time and effort and the game is harvested cleanly then I have no problem with it. Congrats to any hunter that is able harvest the game they are chasing regardless of how they did it.

Foxpro vs. Primos Alpha Dogg ?

Randy Anderson is my coyote calling hero and the reason i went with the primos call over the fox pro. I figured if it was good enough for him then that's what I wanted. Little did I know that he probly had a truck bed full of callers because they don't last more than two stands.

Foxpro vs. Primos Alpha Dogg ?

Dont mess with the alpha dog. I had one and it only lasted long enough for me to loose the receipt so I couldnt take it back. Fox pros are top of line and work really well. I suggest you save a bit more and get the model above the one your looking at. Make one purchase instead of upgrading later on.
  22. I had the Pleasure of helping some good friends of mine on a December Coues Hunt this weekend. The hunt started with my friends Ryan and his wife Annette picking me up at 5am. We dint have to go far and we were set up and glassing by sun up. I took them to a canyon that I always find deer in. Its one of those that just gets driven by and never really hunted hard. We glassed for a couple hours and didn't find anything so we decided to hike up and over the next ridge and glass into a nice bowl. After about ten minutes I find a nice 3x3 buck that I guessed to be in the mid 80s with nice chocolate colored horns chasing a few does. I tried to get Annette set up for the shot but just couldn't get her to find the buck in the shadows with her scope. Ryan said he had him picked out and was ready to take the shot. A quick range revealed he was 690 yards away and presenting a perfect broadside shot. His first shot hit low and the buck just stood there looking around and gave an opportunity for a second shot. The second shot hit low as well but was much closer and the buck decided he had enough and decided to bolt up and over the mountain. After few disappointed moments and choice words we decided to continue glassing the area for another buck. I went back to watching the does hoping another buck would show up and sure enough a small spike appeared to continue the harassment of the does. Since the big dog on the block got run off he figured this was his chance. After watching him for a bit through the 20 power Steiners I could see that he had only one antler and that he was limping badly due to his left rear leg having been broke at the knee. As we were watching him Annette said you know what, this is my last day to hunt and this is my third year with a Coues tag and I have yet to seal the deal on a Coues buck. She decided to try and take the buck and put him out of his misery and fill her tag and the freezer at the same time. After getting her on the buck and getting her set up in a comfortable shooting position the small spike had moved to almost the exact position the bigger 3x3 was at when Ryan shot at him. I ranged the spike at 680 yards and told her to turn her turret to the 700 yard mark and hold at his belly line. She said she was ready so I gave her a wind hold and told her to shoot when she was ready. About 10 seconds later the .260 barks and I am able to watch the bullet vapor trail of the 120 Amax hit its mark just above the elbow joint in the small bucks shoulder. The hide of the buck rippled like throwing a stone in a pond and he toppled forward and began rolling down the mountain. Annette made an amazing one shot kill on this small buck at an incredible 680 yards. The 120 Amax performed amazingly providing through and through penetration leaving a quarter sized exit hole and turning the heart and lungs to mush. All I can say is that I wish we were able to get her set up on the first buck because I have no doubt in my mind that she would have her hands around a nice 3x3 instead of this little spike. I don't think any of us would have changed a thing though. Congrats to the long range huntress and thanks for letting me be a part of the experience. The first picture is of Annette and her trophy. you can see where the bullet entered just above the elbow joint. The second picture shows the exit hole left by the 120 grain Amax. It looked like the buck was shot in the knee joint of his rear leg on one of the prior hunts probably the youth or October hunt. The third picture is of the shooting position. The shot was taken from the right peak in the rock out cropping.
  23. Great buck scott! Nice shooting and outstanding write up as well.
