How does it shoot currently? I think spending the money on bedding, floating and a trigger job would be the better option on improving a factory rifle.

Are you planning on re-barreling said .270? Truing the action and bolt will change the headspace of the rifle and the barrel will need to be re-fit accordingly. if you are going to drop the coin and spend the time doing it just as well throw a few hundred more at it and get it re-barrelled with a match grade barrel in the caliber of your choosing.

For the record I never said the .264WM was not capable of 3200fps. I am well aware that it is and is an excellent performer. The only point I have been trying to make is that you can in fact get very near .264 Win Mag velocities and performance from the 6.5-06AI without using near as much powder or having to go through the added cost of having the bolt opened up as simple as that may be. For me, being able to reach velocities over 3100 fps while using under 60 grains of powder is down right impressive. Why burn 65 plus grains of powder to get an extra 100fps when you don't have to. The animals will never know the difference. Any route you pick you will be happy with. The 6.5 cartridges are all very impressive and capable of killing just about anything from a long ways away.

Give them time. I emailed them the other day asking about the possibility of a 115 or heavier 25cal tipped match king and the response was basically to be patient as they were still in the works of rolling out other bullets. Sounds like they got plans for many more bullets to come which is good.

Ok, just for the sake of making my point then. looking at a few loads listed on loaddata.com using 26" test barrels they are calling for anywhere between 63-68 grains of powder to reach max velocities of just over 3040 with 140 class bullets. Since you claim to be compressing loads I will say you are running a touch more than that. Compare that to my Ackley using only 59 grains of powder to achieve 3180 fps with a Berger even. Now there is nothing wrong with the .264 Win Mag I am never one to hate on a sweet 6.5 but, there are other options out there to get similar or near identical performance without using as much powder or having to step up to a magnum case. Now kids, remember the 6.5-06AI is a wildcat cartridge, what is safe in my rifle may not be safe in yours. Reduce loads and work up slowly. That's not so hard.

My Savage .22-250 loves the new 69 grain versions. Prints five shots into the high .2's low .3's easily. It's boringly accurate for a stock rifle. I am using 37.5gr of R-17 for a velocity of 3440fps and they are providing about two and a half inches less wind drift at 500 meters over the standard match kings of the same weight.

I am willing to bet my Ackley brass will last a lot longer than standard .264 Win Mag brass. One of the major benefits to Ackley improving is minimizing case stretch. I anneal after fireforming and neck size from there without any issues at all. How much powder are you using to push a 140 over 3200fps?
-
Not burning as much powder for one and the design of the Ackley case itself helps keep the burn inside the case rather than the throat of the rifle.

Second offense should send them straight to federal pound them in the a$$ prison. -
For one the bolt will need to be opened up to allow for the magnum case. Two, I haven't seen a .264 Win Mag do much more than I am capable of already with the AI case and the extra 8-10 grains more powder needed to get the same velocities isn't worth it to me. As far as gains go the standard 6.5-06 is ballistically identical to the 6.5-284, so velocities of 2950 or so are about the max out of it. Might get a bit more but its starts to get hard on cases. The 6.5-06AI can achieve 3100 quite easily. As far as barrel life goes it's like anything else, more speed and more powder equals more barrel wear but I believe wholeheartedly that it is much easier on barrels than the .264 Win Mag. I don't target shoot with mine, I take it out once or twice a year to confirm drops and hunt with, so far the barrel has lasted as long as anything else I have. I am expecting at least 1500 rounds out of it before its time to set back. Thats a long time at 20 or 30 rounds a year.

I would go one step further and Ackley Improve it. I don't own a magnum rifle in any chambering because I have 6.5-06AI and it is capable of killing just about anything I want at any range I want to with ease. I am pushing 140 Berges at 3180 out a 26" Shaw 9 twist barrel and I can deliver almost 1200ft lbs of energy at 1000 yards with impact velocities of more than 1900 fps with only 4.5 minutes of wind drift in a 10mph wind. My rifle like yours is built on a Winchester model 70 that used to be a .30-06.

I like the M1 because it is not load specific just simple moa adjustments. The cds turret works with one load at one elevation and temperature. If you change bullet weights or types, or powder for any reason your cds turret is essentially useless because your ballistics are different than what the turret was designed for.

The Atlas are really nice, I have used a couple but like others have said I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on one. I use a simple Harris knock off, Blackhawk brand, from Walmart. It has a 6-9" height and swivel for $40. I have used mine on my last three deer hunts and they have worked great for prone shots. If it ever breaks or wears out I will spend another $40 and be on my happy way.

I understand, but I don't want to buy 500 bullets when I just want some to try out to see if they shoot.

$14 bucks for usps shipping! No thanks. Midway will have them soon enough.

22-250 bullets that won't vaporize

In my experience cats are soft and they end up with a lot more damage than a coyote does with the same bullet. If targeting cats specifically then a 17 fireball or something similar may be the ticket. That being said I use a 52gr Berger in my .223 and haven't had an exit yet with the few coyotes I have shot with it. -
A bunch of kids and some Coues.

Outstanding Scott! Congrats to everyone on some great deer. -
All it takes is a little practice and knowing your equipment and abilities. heck, my wife just whacked her deer last weekend at 824 with a 25-06 and she made it look easy. Now before you say that wasn't ethical she hit him square in the shoulders and he piled up within a few steps. A whole lot quicker and cleanly than if stuck with a sharp stick from a string at 40 yards. I had her shooting from field positions all year long just so she could make this shot if it presented itself and it worked out perfectly. Don't knock someones skills and abilities or hunting style simply because you can't or won't. For the record, I was speaking ballistically, meaning the 6.5 Creedmoor is is capable to that range.

I just finished putting together a Savage for the wife. Using a model 11 action 22" stainless 6.5 Creedmoor barrel set in a lady hunter walnut stock. Weaver bases, Burris Signature Zee rings and a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40. Rifle, sling and a full magazine tips the scales at 7.5 lbs. Sweet little rig with the ability to push 140 Bergers at or near 2800 fps will allow it to take deer out to 800 yards easily.

Way to go JR! -
Perfect just the way it is, in an excellent cartridge. Remington don't make them like this anymore.

TTT. I am really surprised this is still here.

Outstanding Barrels for the money.
