I agree with Lance. Redding is my preferred and Forester also makes a nice set. RCBS is good and LEE works just fine too. I hate Hornady dies tho, they are the worst. I have had to send two different sets back in the past. One was supposed to be a .22-250 set that had a .20 cal sizing stem in it so I was making a nice 20-250 wildcat instead. The other was a .204 Ruger die set that had a set of 20 Vartarg dies in it. To Hornadys credit they replaced each set with the correct dies no problem but I refuse to buy another set from them.

Bullets tight when chambered **Update**
STOMP442 replied to Camofreak's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This has been a common problem with the 6.5 Creedmoor specifically. I have seen a hand full of them with the same exact problem. Contact Savage and they will send you a shipping label to send the rifle back and they will replace the barrel for you free of charge. The last one I dealt with took about 3 weeks turn around. I believe there is a thread over on Savage shooters forum where they have have a list of firearms in a certain serial number range that have this problem. You might look for that list and cross reference it to your rifle. -
Replacing an Accutrigger
STOMP442 replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Swapping the trigger on a Savage is pretty simple and straight forward. The hardest part is getting the sear spring and the bolt release to line up just right to get the pin through. I have grown to love the Accutrigger and with a little trimming of the weight spring or the replacement listed above you can tune them up nice and crisp with a 2lb pull. Having tried the Timney trigger, the Rifle Basix Sav1 and Sav2, and the SSS Trigger, the Timney or the Sav2 are definitely where it's at. I believe there are some nice write ups over on the Savage shooters forums under the articles section that talks about each trigger and directions for putting them in. -
This has been my go to shotgun for years. It recently broke the extractor and the pin that holds the charging handle in place during a skeet shoot. Charles Daly has closed shop and not doing any warranty or repair work anymore and I can't find the parts I need to get it back up and running. Selling as is for parts to someone else who may have one of these and needs parts. Asking $100 shipped from my FFl to yours.

Been there, done that. All the parts I need are sold out. Can't seem to find parts anywhere else either aside from buying a complete used gun. If I am going to buy a new gun I'm going to try something different, even though I loved this one.

This one was made in Turkey.

The Federal Premium loaded with 168gr Sierra Game King.

Also needs to compare other high bc bullet designs in 7mm to his high bc .308. There are far better offerings in that weight class from Hornady let alone other bullet brands than the SST or the interlock. .308 155 Sierra TMK = .464 (Litz) .284 150 Nosler ABLR = .576 (Litz) .284 162 Amax = .599 (Litz) .284 162 ELDX = .630 .284 162 ELDM = .652 .284 160 Sierra TMK = .600 .284 168 Berger VLD = .618 .284 168 Nosler ABLR = .624 (Litz)

3150 from a 24" barrel .308? has this data been verified through another chrony preferably a lab radar or magneto speed? This seems about 150-200 fps faster than anything I have ever seen or heard of with 150gr bullets.

Question on building on a savage
STOMP442 replied to dse's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Model 10, 11, 12, 14, & 16 are all the same action. The different numbers just represent different options such as stainless or wood stock. For $120 the Boyds line of stocks are really nice for the money with my favorite being the Pro Varmint model. It fits really well and shoots nice prone off of a Bi-pod as well as off the bench with a rest and bag. -
Limbsaver on Ruger m77 mk1 tang safety?
STOMP442 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Belt sander for rough fit and some sand paper and turtle wax to finish fit. Mask off the stock with masking tape and wrap the sand paper around a small flat piece of wood or small sharping stone and just work your way around. Put a good movie on tv and get to it. Takes a bit of time but will look good when your done. -
Limbsaver on Ruger m77 mk1 tang safety?
STOMP442 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Get a grind to fit pad and fit it yourself. You will end up with a lot better fit and finish. The pre fit pads rarely fit correctly in my experience. -

22-250 or .243 for yotes and mulies
STOMP442 replied to AR15RDY's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The .243 is hands down the better multi-purpose cartridge listed but there are others out there as well. The .260 Rem or 6.5 Creed would also be great choices and allow for a bit more power and range on the top end of the spectrum with 85-90gr bullet options for the yotes at blistering speeds. The .257 Roberts mentioned above would be an outstanding rig as well. -

260 Rem or 6.5 creedmoore???
STOMP442 replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
If you reload, the .260 makes the most sense as you should already have plenty of .243 brass you can simply neck up and be on your way. If you are looking for high quality factory ammo at a decent price that is relatively easy to find then the Creed is the way to go. Ballistically there is really only about 50fps difference between the two. -
So again your saying without actually saying it is that you are shooting or going to be shooting a Lapua because it works so great at long range and drops elk where they stand and yet claim you don't care what the BC is. I hate to say it but you really can't have one without the other. Bigger caliber, heaver bullet results in a higher BC just the way it works. Make that same shot with a .300 or any other suitable caliber for that matter and the bull would have likely died just as quickly. As you have pointed out so many times before it helps when you hit them in the right place. Just to clarify a bit the O.P. asked what bullet to shoot out of his .300 Win Mag. The fact that you can't answer a simple question such as what bullet proves you are a lot dumber than I have previously given you credit for. Anyone here with half a brain and who has done even a little bit of shooting understands the point I am trying to make. If you are half as good as you claim you are and done half the hunting and shooting you claim you have, you know I'm right too. You just don't want to admit here in front of all your friends. I'm tired of explaining myself over and over again on this topic, It's obvious there is no getting through and no one especially the O.P. is getting anything out of this.

Never said anything about being unethical just not needed. I love how you guys keep putting words in my mouth. And I love how you keep proving my point. Let me ask you this. Why are you shooting .338 lapuas? List me a few reasons and then ask why it's so bad I suggest heavy for caliber high BC bullets for the .300.
-
I will never deny the .338 Lapua offers outstanding ballistics but I will defend to my dying breath that it is not needed to hunt elk or especially these little deer. There comes a point where it becomes more compensation than anything else. I for one am very comfortable with the size of my whoop stick. Those with itty bitty ones shoot .338 lapuas.

Wow I could post pics of dead critters too but it still wouldn't change the fact that higher BCs will drift less in the wind, retain more energy and provide flatter trajectories. This is proven scientifically beyond a doubt. I have never once in this thread said that you "have" to shoot a higher BC bullet I have only been proving the advantages of doing so. I also never said any one should shoot a partition at that range. What I posted was simply a what if scenario to show what can be accomplished with a higher BC. Don't take things so personally and seriously it's only the internet. Step outside and go shoot a ballistically inferior bullet at something, take a picture and calm down. And yes I did kill a deer at over 1200 yards and I didn't need a super duper magnum to do it. A high BC bullet was used though and it worked like a champ.
