Use whatever one will let you use a G7 drag profile. The G7 will give much better results at long range over the G1. Also remember when using Hornady bullets to use the average G7 value over just the high velocity one. They have a PDF you can download on their site that has all the BC values and at what velocity band they are applied to.

Savage 11/111 300 win mag bolt question
STOMP442 replied to Jazz's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Yes that needs to be in the down position to insert the bolt. If you look down the rear of the rifle you will see a notch on the right side in the bolt raceway for that to fit. Then when you cock the bolt it rotates that pin to the up position and the rifle is ready to fire. As long as you hear a good click when you cycle the bolt and dry fire it you should be good to go. -
Yep the applied ballistics app is a little involved and takes a bit to get used but it works really well and worth every penny.

Make sure your bc is input correctly and using the correct drag model. Almost sounds like you have a G1 bc value input for a G7.

If you like dealing with the best customer service folks in the industry buy a Vortex. If not then get something else. My vote is for the Leupold Vx3i in 6.5-20x50. It's light weight, simple, has great glass and well under your budget.

Long range shooters & 6.5 guru's - your opinion
STOMP442 replied to azslim's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The only down side with the .264 Win Mag is barrel ware. Even when loaded down you will still be burning a bunch more powder than a Creedmoor. That being said when used in normal hunting scenarios the .264 Win mag will more than likely last a life time. -
Switch to the 147 and I bet it tightens up even more. I have yet to find acceptable accuracy with the 143s but the 140s and 147s have shot very well for me.

Got one hit for me. Needed two of them but I will take it.

Two New Rifle Upgrades Coming Soon To An Addict Near You...
STOMP442 replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This is exactly why I abandoned my 6.5WSM. I had built one of those first then built a 6.5-06 Improved about a year later and found the 6.5 improved did everything the short mag would more efficiently. -
6.5X55 SE Handloading - Whats its potential?
STOMP442 replied to chuckster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I believe he was using R17 if I remember correctly. It's somewhere in this thread I think. http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f28/6-5-creedmoor-shooters-183735/- 17 replies

6.5X55 SE Handloading - Whats its potential?
STOMP442 replied to chuckster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have been reading excellent things about reloader 16 as well. All the benefits of 17 but with temp stability. I found a pound in Tucson last week but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. It doesn't have to be H4350 either, Accurate 4350 is a little easier to find and is also an excellent powder choice. I was reading a thread over on long range hunting the other day with a guy claiming to get over 2800fps out of his Tikka CTR in 6.5 Creed and given the larger case capacity of the Swede case you should be able to eclipse that pretty easily I would imagine.- 17 replies

6.5X55 SE Handloading - Whats its potential?
STOMP442 replied to chuckster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
R17 may be the better option if you are wanting more speed. For pure accuracy though 4350 of some sort is very hard to beat. Speed is nice but it definitely isn't everything. There is nothing you can do at 2900fps that you couldn't do at 2800fps, just take a couple extra clicks to get there is all.- 17 replies

6.5X55 SE Handloading - Whats its potential?
STOMP442 replied to chuckster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Yeah it will hold it but in my experience, 42 grains generally works pretty good. The Swede is probably the most forgiving cartridge I have ever loaded for.- 17 replies

6.5X55 SE Handloading - Whats its potential?

Yeah should be able to just fine in a modern action. Somewhere around 42 grains of H4350 should put you right in there.- 17 replies

STOMP442 replied to chuckster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
You should be able to run up around 2900 no problem. Like most 6.5s H4350 seems to be the ticket in the swede.- 17 replies

Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)
STOMP442 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I bet you will be pleasantly surprised how well it works. I have had very good results in a standard 260 as well as the Improved version with H4831 -

STOMP442 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have used both with no discernible difference in accuracy or velocity at least in this particular cartridge. It's the same stuff, one is just smaller grained. In a larger case with large powder charges load densities may change enough to see a difference but I haven't seen it in my rifle. -

STOMP442 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Here is my old thread on mine and a pic of my rifle. My rifle shot much better with H4831 than it did with H1000 or Retumbo. It's funny how particular barrels can be. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/41495-65-06-ackley-improved/ -
Usually how it works is you purchase the gun online and before they ship it they will require a faxed copy of the FFL license of the business you would like it sent to. Before I had my own I would contact whatever gun shop or dealer I wanted to go through and let them know of my intention. Once the purchase was made online I would have my local shop send the info over and a couple days later go pick up my firearm and fill out paper work.

Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)
STOMP442 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
That is one of my favorite things about Ackley cases. Most of the time you can reach velocities of much larger cases with less powder which also translates into less recoil and cost per round. The no trimming part saves a bunch of time as well. -
Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)
STOMP442 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Pretty sure that barrel with 4000ish rounds on it was also nitrided and set back at least once to achieve that round count if I remember correctly. That's quite a bit more money and effort for an everyday practice rifle. Truth be told a guy doesn't need 3100fps and the extra powder and recoil required to get there to shoot long range. Personally, I would still pick the swede for what the OP wants to do. Pressures are low and ballistics are more than sufficient for just about anything with widely available and affordable high quality components. -

STOMP442 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The 6.5x55 has been doing all the neat and wonderful things the creedmoor and 260 has for over 100 years. In a modern action velocities well above 2900 are possible and lapua and Norma brass is easy to come by and pretty darn cheap to boot. -
Sportsmans Concrete for sure. Buck & Cody are awesome guys.

General Purpose/ Back up Rifle
STOMP442 replied to duckhunter175's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Two inch difference in barrel length may effect muzzle velocity by about 40 fps in a .270 thats not a whole lot to worry about especially for a back up rifle.
