Help w/Load Data .264wm w/ Hornady ELD-X 143
STOMP442 replied to azslim's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My 6.5-06 AI has a 1:9 twist and will shoot the 140 Bergers and the 142 Match Kings very well but they are shorter than the new 143s. I also live at 3000 ft elevation and hunt from there on up. Might be worth taking some measurements and plugging your data into the Berger twist calculator on their site and see what you come up with. If you can get an SG of at least 1.4 your rifle should be able to handle it. For my particular rifle at my environmental conditions, I am getting an SG of 1.48 with the 140 Bergers at 3170fps. -
Every rifle is different and will like different loads. But I have always had good results with 185gr Bergers and H-1000 or the 210s and Retumbo. Either one of those will reach to 800 and beyond quite easily.

Brandon, Congrats on the goat man! I have always said those Match Kings work great on game.

You can buy it directly from savage. You will have to provide a serial number and also fill out and fax back a liability release form but they will sell you the parts you are after. I haven't called them in a while but they have had very helpful and friendly customer service in the past. I believe the part numbers you are after are: Detachable box mag frame: 106237 Magazine Bottom: 106104

As Lance has said the Match Kings do kill very well. I have a friend that I built a .260 Remington for that has killed numerous deer with the 142 at some pretty incredible distances and it has worked flawlessly. I have personally killed a handful of coyotes with the 69gr and quite a few with the 100gr match king in a .250 Savage. The Match Kings work thats for sure. I also seen a nice bull elk killed with a 175gr TMK out of a .308 at over 700 yards that folded right up as well.

Hate to say it but it's time to try a different bullet. Try something from Sierra. If the bullets in the green box don't shoot something is wrong with the rifle. Make sure your scope mounts and action screws are tight as well.

Natchezss has great deals on scopes all the time that would be much better options than a cheap craptex. They are currently promoting Nikon Monarch 5s 3-15s for $319. That's decent glass at a great price with all the features you would need for a young hunter. It has the advanced BDC for hold overs and also good reliable turrets if you wanted to go that route with just as good of a warranty as a vortex. https://www.natchezss.com/nikon-monarch-5-rifle-scope-3-15x42mm-ed-sf-advanced-bdc-reticle.html

http://appliedballisticsllc.com/ballistics/ This one is the best in the business with a bullet library of lots of bullets with their proven and tested ballistic coefficients in either G1 or G7.

Firing pin not striking primer hard enough to ignite
STOMP442 replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Gun scrubber is a great de-greaser and doesn't harm plastic or other materials. I would recommend not using anything WD-40 on any firearm part. That crap will collect more dirt and cause more issues than anything. I like to use Ballistol for lubing firing pin springs or even bolts in general. Great stuff that won't gum up even in cold. -
Go shoot it. It's the only way to be sure, and unless it's a first focal plane scope the hash marks will represent a different range at different power settings on the scope. It's probably best to determine your drops at high power where you would more than likely have the power set for a longer shot.

I got one a few years back and it was awesome. She was a decent size sow. If I remember right I got back about 60 pounds from the butcher. That hog was some of the best tasting pork I have ever ate. All we ever did was salt and pepper the pork chops and throw them on the grill. Nothing fancy and those BBQs are still talked about to this day. Good Stuff. Good Luck.

Hard pressed to find a better Coues rig than a .25-06. Mild recoil, flat trajectories, high velocities and excellent terminal performance for it's size.

Like I said I don't have my note book in front of me. But I have been using H1000 in the last few I have done load work on. Hodgdon site shows a max charge of 58.5gr as a max load with 117gr bullets.
-
H1000 works extremely well in a 25-06 with a 115 Berger bullet. Without looking at my notes I want to say 57.5gr has worked well in the last couple I have worked on. Velocities have been around 3150.
-
All of those colors actually look really good on Firearms. Can't really go wrong any way you choose, but good luck with the decision.
-
I'll take it. pm inbound.

I have always had good results with H4831 or H1000 / Retumbo. One of those three powders about a grain off of max charge will generally run pretty darn well with the 160 class bullets.
-
Use whatever one will let you use a G7 drag profile. The G7 will give much better results at long range over the G1. Also remember when using Hornady bullets to use the average G7 value over just the high velocity one. They have a PDF you can download on their site that has all the BC values and at what velocity band they are applied to.

6.5x55 Load Starting from Scratch?

Savage 11/111 300 win mag bolt question
STOMP442 replied to Jazz's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Yes that needs to be in the down position to insert the bolt. If you look down the rear of the rifle you will see a notch on the right side in the bolt raceway for that to fit. Then when you cock the bolt it rotates that pin to the up position and the rifle is ready to fire. As long as you hear a good click when you cycle the bolt and dry fire it you should be good to go. -
Yep the applied ballistics app is a little involved and takes a bit to get used but it works really well and worth every penny.
-
Make sure your bc is input correctly and using the correct drag model. Almost sounds like you have a G1 bc value input for a G7.

If you like dealing with the best customer service folks in the industry buy a Vortex. If not then get something else. My vote is for the Leupold Vx3i in 6.5-20x50. It's light weight, simple, has great glass and well under your budget.
