You will also want a hard primer cup.

No crimp. You will want to bump then shoulders a little more than for a bolt action (.003-.004), but case life is short enough with an M1A you aren't giving anything up.

Yes they did. Not sure when they switched to the current version, probably in the seventies.

Those are gone but I'll probably have more soon. I sent a PM when you first posted, but it looks like your account doesn't accept messages.

Cornmeal black powder filler
Mike S replied to buckman888's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Never loaded for cap and ball, but black powder should never have an air gap between the bullet and powder as it does not burn progressively like smokeless and will have major pressure issues. I expect that is why you are hearing reference to fillers for that application. For muzzle loading rifles, at least, there are vented nipples which can help with ignition and some brands of primers are definitely hotter than others. -
Cool rifle!

Sounds fun. Once you get a good load, head north, the higher the better, during the summer for the actual shooting. Left hand twist will help, but spin drift will be the least of your worries ;-). We shoot at 1000 with irons, coat and sling all the time at Ben Avery, the 10 ring is 20".

Keep the 6.5-270AI or get the .280AI
Mike S replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thinking you meant to type 0.002. Not understanding how setting the die for a longer case neck can maintain your shoulder datum. -
Keep the 6.5-270AI or get the .280AI
Mike S replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I'd keep shooting the current barrel until it was done. How many rounds are through it? Do you have access to a bore scope? Once the barrel is shot out, and you'll know, I'd go ahead and re barrel to the same chambering as you a;ready have the dies. Cant see that an elk would know the difference. You mention having to trim cases every firing. Something seems wrong there, an AI case should stretch very little. Are you sure your reamer/chamber requires neck turning the .270 brass when necking down? That's not much of a diameter reduction. My 6.5-06 does fine w/o neck turning, neck clearance wise, using Winchester .270 brass, although I do use lightly turned necks for my hunting rounds. -
I believe Dennis Olsen (Montana?) is still doing work. Seems like there is a company called Canyon Creek that was making some nice wood stocked customs. At the next price point up would include the guild builders. PL Holehan inc in Tucson builds some great rifles. Here is my guild member built .257 Roberts Mauser sporter, is this what you are thinking of?

I believe that is correct. Frank Luke?

lets talk effective distance for caliber/bullet weight
Mike S replied to Tac's topic in Long Range Shooting
Up to the point where the bullet becomes unstable, likely in the trans sonic range, it pretty much boils down to the shooter. -
If sanding does the trick, be sure to put some type of waterproof finish on the sanded areas.

Best Case Trimmer for 300 RUM???
Mike S replied to gaps's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Got curious, so I timed myself trimming 100 .308 cases. Took just over 10 minutes. -
Best Case Trimmer for 300 RUM???
Mike S replied to gaps's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I put my WFT in a drill press and its amazingly quick. Where did you read that they are not adjustable? Mine are set up for a particular parent case type, say 243 thru 308 or 25-06 thru 30-06 for example, as they index off of the shoulder, but are adjustable for trim length. -
Pressure Signs Early/Well before MAX *AND W/Factory Ammunition*

Isn't the head space set on a Savage by the barrel nut? Any chance that has moved? -

This would be a coin toss between my two backpack rifles as buffalo is not on the criteria list... 6.5-06 Pre 64 M70 action, Rock #2 1-8, McMillan Hunters Edge, Jewell Trigger, bullets depending on game. I would switch from the 10x Mark 4 back to the 2.5x8 CDS Leupold and be at 7.75 pounds. 30-06 Pre 64 M70 Featherweight, factory 1-10 barrel, tuned factory trigger, McMillan Hunters Edge, 155.5 to 200 grain bullets, 2.5x8 Leupold, 7.4 pounds. Could also make do with my .257 Roberts custom Mauser, but it is heavier at 8.3 pounds and not as weather resistant... Edit: with buffalo on the list, my 30-06 is the clear winner for me. Bought it with buffalo in mind actually. I don't hunt javelina with a rifle, but a handloaded 30-06 would work fine.
