First year taking on an archery hunt. I decided to go out and set up a blind today for a week of hunting. I planned on beginning the 18th. I was going after work and the sun just started to go down faster than I thought it was. There was no way I was going to make it to my scouted honey hole. I was already on the road all packed but so I decided to stop way short of my spot and decided to go to a watering tank just to take a look. I had my tag and my bow so I said what the heck it won’t hurt. I pull up about ½ a mile from the hole and get off my truck. I look back and see what appears to be a deer but pay no attention to it. I just got off my truck and thought there was no way I just saw deer and I don’t even have my pack or bow with me. I put on my pack and look back towards the same area and still the object deer was standing there. I thought it was just a bush or tree looking at my direction. Then the tree moved down! Take out the binos and WOW a doe. I decide to just glass for a while and there it was a buck! I counted six points but there could have been more….or less. All I knew is that there was an antlered deer in front of me. I begin a stalk on my hands and knees. They were approximately 300 yards away. After an hour I was within sixty or so yards. My heart was pumping. I was behind a lot of brushed and knocked an arrow. I imagined the shot and waited for the right moment. I felt I needed to get closer. I began to move. Then the wind came. A doe that had fallen behind and I did not see was downwind from me and spooked them all immediately. My first stalk blown! The hopes of having such luck and the possibility of having meat in the freezer gone. But that was a great time. It was well worth it and the adrenalin rush was like no other. This wasn’t my first rodeo and adrenalin has been there but not like this. It was different. Like a huge reward was on its way. By the way my apologies on a long write on an unsuccessful outing. Yeah no pics either, Sorry. But if you already read up to here might as well continue. I did learn a couple of things I knew already but did not think of them once the chase was on. First, Tunnel Vission what if that doe would have been another buck. A bigger buck. Or a lion pissed cause I was taking his dinner. Second, scent control. I was going out just to put up a blind but took my bow just in case. Maybe I should have at least sprayed myself down once. If I was going out to play then I should be ready to play. Third, I need a rangefinder. I thought it over and over again as to why I was afraid to take a 60 yard shot. I got home and stood at the 60 yard line of my home range and told myself I need to work on my estimations I think I may have been closer than I thought I was. A rangefinder would of taken care of that either during the stalk or when I was out scouting I could of practiced estimations with the help of a range finder. Well first stalk was not but was a success. I may be new at this and I know a lot of people think new guys are going to go out there and fling arrows at any moving thing; but this is one new guy that will play his cards right and will take the shot only when I am ready to take the shot. I will keep my next post short. Hopefully it says “Here is my buck” and the picture itself will tell the story.

Congratulations on the long shot. You do have an advantage...I envy right now. I passed on a 60 yard shot today. I was confident going outside to my target and sending an arrow 60 yards but apparently I did not feel comfortable taking the shot at the deer. My first year at Archery Hopefully with some ( and I mean a lot) practice. I will be confident in taking that 8o yard shot next year. Congratulation again!

+1 on the GT XT Hunters. I had fletching go bad on an arrow one I shot an old scrap fridge the a brick wall to finally break the arrow. I have shot wooden fence post (yes, I miss too.) and have had the arrow survive the shot/s.

Great Buck! Hope my first will be one for a good story like yours! Wouldn't mind the size but first come first serve. Congrats! -
They should let them keep the poor bear. Probably all alone. Two years and no problem. Sound like the rednecks live in the middle of the wild. I would see no probelm since every one is happy! Someone must have been really jelous cause they couldn't have there own Bear!

I really don't think Politics get in the way much in this site. Now, I am a quiet (cause i am young and am learning now) but faithfull participant to this site. I pout my 2 cents when I can. I was looking at the topics available on the site and correct me if I am wrong (which 90%of the time I am). Politics only come in to play in mostly one topic. The Illegals! Now not gonna say anything on them nor should this be the place to post you opinon on the topic of illegals. I saw two of the most popular (which I think are the most popular) aras and I only see one Thread up on Illegals and that is the only one I believe Is political. Plase correct me if I am wrong and Delet my comment if I sound stupid and don't know what I am takling about. This a good site. I like deer and hate politics so I wouldn't stick around if it was really that bad.

OK 270. I am cuurenlty employed by a law enforcement agency. I am not an officer but am an employee with experience. If an officer has a run in with an illegal alien they Usually (not all the time) call out Border Patrol for the detention of the subjects in question. It is really not there job to look out for them or to track them down. It IS there Job to protect you. if you go out there again carry your weapon. Put it in the holster on your side. That is just fine. Also carry a cell phone. Not sure how signals work out there but carry the thing and when you see them report it! call BP yourself. Call MCSO if they seem to be putting you in danger. MCSO HAS TO RESPOND. And if they don't then you might have a nice fight you can pick with them in court. And if they put you in extreme Danger well then...........Warning shot might work. I myself am Hispanic and My father and Mother were once illegals. I always back up the illegals since that is how I got the chance be born here in the USA. But if these guys are being agressive and putting your life in danger, well, I have to agree with 270. My way of life has a priority above them and my will to live is very high. No one illegal or Legal should have the right to put me in danger. Now lets not cause a seen and go out there and call it open season on them eithere. Remeber if your life or Someone's life is in extreme immediate danger then you do what you have to do. Untill that time come (god hope it dosen't) , keep your gun in your holster. If you see them out in the field Ingore them. If they see you acknowledge them so that way they know you see them as well. God bless all of your hunts and hope the best for you guys!

He is our "leader"! I would call him one of us, since I asked the same question before I saw the Punch line! He is not that bright but neither are I.... I mean "am I"
