The bull in my avatar was from the late archery hunt in 3c a few years ago. I hunted everyday of the season and some days I saw a dozen bulls and others I did not see an elk. I do not have the patience to sit water so I glassed and still hunted. Still hunted the bull releasing the arrow at 18 yards in very thick cover causing a stampede. I would do it again knowing this is NOT a rut hunt and the opportunity to not fill your tag strongly exist.

750 - 1000 wolves planned in Az; meeting planned this weekend
idgaf replied to couesmagnet's topic in Elk Hunting
I have seen and experienced what a nine wolf pack did to my favorite hunting area in unit one. It is not good. The wolves would chase the elk herd for miles until one would drop back and then they would eat for the night. They would do the same thing the next day. Two season ago during the deer hunt we saw over a hundred deer in that area last year in the same area, same people, over three days we saw ten does and pack of really fat wolves. when the elk would startle the immediately go in flight mode and run in single file for miles. Mexican wolves can stay in Mexico. -
honestly, I think the answer is yes all of the above to a point. The unit with the biggest bulls is a moving target, unit 10 one year and unit 1 the next, unit 9 the following. I think there is no one answer to the question. It is based on a couple of constants: genetics and pressure and a couple of evolving variables climatic conditions and food sources. In 2010 I saw pics of 420 bulls coming out of unit 10 in 2011 and 2012 I saw pics of 420-460 bulls out of unit one and 27. Last year I saw pics of giant bulls from everywhere, lots of rain, especially in 23n. Pick a unit and hope weather conditions and the draw favor you.

I mean no offense to those that are bitter about not getting drawn and maybe its my understanding of supply and demand, but I have no negative feelings (and am happy for them) to those that are luckier than me and have a tag coming or G&F for the draw methods. When 2500 people want one of 20 tags it may take awhile for you to be one of the twenty. Or usually in my case when 11 people want 10 tags and I am the one without the tag, I simply say typical and then I will get the next one. The draw is about percentages and luck, if you have a lot of luck put in for any hunt and win, if you have less luck (like me) play the percentages and eventually you will win.

Good news card just hit. Bad news its for my wife or daughter and not me.

I got to tag along on a deer hunt yesterday(raffle winner), we saw some coues rutting activity in 27.

I would pass on the 12# lb for that fish. I could make a weeks worth of fish taco's from that guy.

Lee, I do not think you need to worry about the fire danger for show low. Everything around us has already burned.

I just did my javelina from January. I boiled for several hours than de-fleshed, boiled for a couple more than de-fleshed. Than I soaked in heated hydrogen peroxided overnite and than I boiled for an hour or so in the hydrogen peroxide. All of the flesh fell straight off of the bone the last round including the cartilage around the nose. It came out quite well but that was alot of work.

try any of the main ranches. King anvil, Elk Horn, Santa Margarita
-
Pigs all over the place. pick an arroyo and walk it. I saw eight different herds the first week of January. Good Luck

Also try a sonoran relleno. It the same as a hot dog but the hot dog is sleeved in a green chille. Yum.

I think it's time to help Game and Fish out a bit.

Gov't is Gov't they never seem to spend my money (and they take way to much of it) in the right places but when they at least try to spend it correctly, I will applaud them not hinder them with criticism. I am not upset with Gov't or frustrated, I am upset at people like you and me dependence on them. When we expect them to go out and hunt for us, something all of us on this board enjoy, we depend on them way to much and it is time to do something about it. ThomC is correct I am not doing this just for G&F, I am doing this for myself and the big game animals I treasure hunting. I believe this is called a win, win, win situation. I will give my fullest effort to taking thirty big game eating predators out of 3b this year to see if it helps. I will do this not because the Gov't told me so or gave an incentive to do so. I will do this because it needs to be done and it takes people like you and I to do something without being told to make this place better. -

After reading on the Sheep and Antelope forums, the criticism G&F got for trying to do something good. I realized that we are beginning to depend on Gov't for everything. I read some opinions how gov't needs to hunt more predators. Than i thought "What has the U.S. become, we now depend on Gov't to do even the things we enjoy, Hunting." That thought coupled with the lack of Antelope I saw on my elk hunt in prime antelope country, the amount of coyotes I saw within a hundred yards of elk and the 90% reduction in antelope permits gave me a new resolution. I will do my best to take 30 coyotes out of a concentrated area, 3b, this year and see if my little effort will help the big game animals in years to come. This one is the first. I am by no means an expert at calling but got this large male fifteen minutes into my first stand, no camo just levy's and a point loma sportfishing hoodie. I misplaced my lanyard with my goto calls and found a squeeker I had not used in a while. I thought for a second as I rolled him "Crap I just shot a wolf" -

Thanks, I would call for a bit and then get an update on the early football game on my phone. I didn't notice but the coyote got within 25 yards before we noticed each other. -
This pic is definitely something our of a "saw" movie. This one was shot with a two blade rage.

Here is one I shot the end of the first week in January. WARNING!!! This picture is not for the timid. This is with an arrow and a broadhead. Needless to say he did not travel very far and was very easy to field dress. Saw a bunch of pigs during the week.

Thanks, I have not quite figured out the settings and functions. After I get frustrated enough I may even open the directions. I just have to remember when I take this camera on one of my "death marches" that I should put it in its case.

I asked my wife and kids for a camera for Christmas after mine met an untimely demise, so they gave me a coffee pot. So a few weeks after x-mas fedex drops off a belated gift to me. I took it out on its maiden voyage on Sunday with my bow in tow. Nothing worth shooting with my bow, but a lot fun for my new toy. Enjoy.

I found a cow today that took an unfortunate tumble down a mountain side two or three days prior. The birds have yet to penetrate it and I was wondering if a lion would eat any?
-
I sat the "crash" site for a day and a half. The time I had left before my overlords, um bosses, would miss me. I could see where something larger than a crow was eating at it and I just could not get the timing right. You can see the path that the cow tumbled. I knew the area was step when escaping bucks would watch there step.

Found a few (12) during my deer/javelina trip last week.

Just a thought, but there is no question the cats have spots. I would question the "kitten" part. I would not consider these cats, kittens, I would consider them juveniles sort of the proverbial teenager.
-
Well 19 rounds, I think I gave one away. I accidentally bought this box instead of 454 casull ammo several years ago. Make me an offer. I can always use broadheads (rage) or arrows or ......?

I just spent a month hunting either in 1 or 3b for elk during all phases of the rut and an additional seven days helping my wife chase deer in 1. I saw bulls in both units that would crush your expectations. If your experienced with the area I wouldn't hesitate to pick 3b, but if your not I would chose unit 1. You can literally find elk in every part of the unit in 1. I also saw a pack of nine wolves that had the elk on edge to say the least. You may be a bit optimistic on the draw cycle.
