when an average hunter gets a strip tag. In the field updates
idgaf replied to idgaf's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Friday I got to where the California guide has been going with his new Mexico client at dawn. Beautiful place. Looked elky to me. I see three bucks , one shooter, and spend the morning catching up to no avail. I spend midday going after matrix, no luck. Early afternoon I go to where I saw the first giant typical no luck, but I do find this. Sorry the field photos didn't take I get lost on parashant and have no idea where I slept. -

ok, nearly caught up with my 300 emails for the week I was gone from work. Im keeping it sequential. think of my last post as a Quinten Taratino movie where its not in order. Wednesday I go after the boss buck and sit in his bedding area for the day. I find these guys in my first moments of glassing My view for breakfast I get to the top and get pinned by this guy at 25 yards. Fortunately hes solo and doesnt care about me very much. I stay in the bedding area most of the day and the boss doesnt show up. I was working my way to the edge when another (or the same) sleeping buck is at 30 yards or so. The evening I drive around a bit on black rock and decide I want to go after Matrix. I head out and get about half way and guess what, I get another flat. this one with side wall damage. I spend the night on the side of the road and head back to see my new friend at Southern tire in St george. I learn that when they grade hwy 5 (big piece of dirt road it sharpens the rocks and the reason for the flats) They hook me up with a deal and I get back to dellenbaugh during a torrential downpour. I wait it out. I get to this one little field and I have a giant 4point at 40 yards from my truck. I get out and he saunters off. The evening ends with me taking this pic. note the rainbow. I sleep at the turnoff to parashant and dellenbaugh that night. Trying to figure which way I am going to go. -

Last post for me until the conclusion. Headed down to dellenbaugh. That voice in my head keeps telling me to go after matrix. Today I found every buck in the group except the three biggest ithink they left. Another hunter is hunting them as well which makethe plan going back that way easier. -

I make a decent living selling light bulbs, oh I mean outside sales for an electrical distributor. I'd have a lot more money if the cartels that run state colleges didn't know how to suck every penny from you. I know drug dealers with more ingritity than those guys. Got into the smaller guys of the herd this morning after breakfast (an orange and beef jerky)I'm headed to the bosses bedding area for an all day sit -

fun evening. WARNING PICTURE INTENSIVE!! i found a the buck that makes me lose my breath. I get back from St George and try to check out a spot on Mudd Mountain. I can see where camping was extensive and the place was hit hard. I go back up top and see the husband and wife team. Hes going after that 5x6 he has on camera. Not expecting to much I go high vantage point and start glassing. Nothing. I am thinking I should be at the waterhole I was at this AM so I pack up my bag and start moving than that same hard horn 2 point pins me. I dont move and they go back to what they were doing than 150/160 class "dink" gets to 25 yards and doesnt take his eyes off of me for 5 minutes. I dont even twitch. The three small bucks eventually pass. I know they are part of the bigger herd so I creep up and startle a few bucks they scramble 50 yards to right, 75 yards away. I figure well they have me busted so I'll keep trying. I inch forward and see this. I dont move and they go back to chewing there cud. I see big horns and inch closer. I am judging him and strongly considering. If I had any other tag I would have emptied my quiver. I put my bow down to resist temptation some more gratuitous 3 point pics I inch closer, im now within 50 yards of the two 4 points and the big 3. Then some more bucks move in. I first see this guy then this little fellow pops out. Im thinking where is the big guys at? then the boss shows (not sure if the side view is the boss or another buck) I snap a couple of blurry pics and then I think I should be freaking shooting my bow. right then canter off. I get to 35 and trip on a rock and they bounce. they will be back tomorrow (I hope and I will focus on this guy) his main beams are freaking sic and he made me loose a breath. I may even wear camo tomorrow. Keep in mind a strip buck ear to ear on average is 26". the average south of here is 24" -

Today 9-2 I drove halfway from oak grove to Black rock last night, intending to go the rest of the way in the predawn hours. I get about to the turnoff to Mudd Mountain, when i see water on the ground and parts and pieces off to the side. One of the Utah guides had hit a doe and wiped out his vehicle. I clear room for him and take him up to the top so he can meet up with the guy he is helping. I sneak into the area where that big herd that I have been posting pics of has been hanging. Apparently, a couple of bucks in that group went 230" inches or so. Who Knew. I find them, less than a hundred yards away and they seem jittery. I take a couple of pics of the smaller ones and look for the big guys. then this guys look my direction but not at me. The guide I had just helped is behind me. Apparently several of the bucks were killed during the week I had to work. The guide and I talked for quite a bit and he lets me know that majority of my hitlist has been obilterated. we meet once again with the other hunter on the mountain. His wife just killed 180" and he is staying the full hunt. and then I go and check my trail camera the reason I asked that question earlier is because I could probably record it. and that buck is kinda cool. oh yeah that lion is still on the prowl. I spend the evening chasing the pretty buck. He is now hard horned and has a couple of friends. I was at the edge of the field he has dinner in, ironically making dinner when the storm started hitting. Thinking he wouldnt come cause of the rain, I drive through and meet him and his buddies in the brushy part of the field . they leave in a hurry. tomorrow, i will sit one of the three tanks that a has water on black rock. -

I Get into the grove of hunting the strip, either sit water or drive around. My choice this morning is drive around. I see this guy and consider putting a stalk on. The Bucks have lost or are starting to shed there velvet making them look not as good. then his friend pops out I go down the road a bit and see this guy I spend mid day back looking for Matrix, that 6xwhatever that I missed earlier leaving the area and going to Oak Groove. Wear your best camo if you check water down there, you will get your picture taken. I keep going south until a view of the western half of the grand canyon, on my wake back I see some Scale Quail. I thought it was unusual. -

Saturday 8/31 Ok, I seen what the roads are like and decide to take it to the extreme. I found a place on google earth called Suicide tank on Suicide Point. several miles from the nearest road, I make the journey with enough supplies to last two days maybe three if I stretch it. I leave at first light, packed heavy with water, food and bedding I get there about 1200. This is what I find. On mojave park its dry AF. I make the journey back and get to the truck around 530. I start driving around because my legs are to wobbly to walk. See this little guy first And then catch this little guy at water And round off the evening with this guy at 50 -

Im in place with service time for some recaps Friday See this on the way not to much to report I leave St george about 1:15 and get to Deffinbaugh around 6:00. A couple of california hunters on SUPPED up Geo trackers and recreationlist have the animals buggered. I drive past Waring Ranch and head down a road I am complaining about every inch in my 2019 tacoma. Then I see this and can only imagine. I am 92 miles from St George, I wondered what that ride was like for the guys riding in this. As far as animals go nothing but a single doe -

Round two starts now. I got my shooting issues taken care of. I have decided to go full nomad for the next ten days solo. I will not set up a camp. Wherever I end up is where I will sleep. I also brought my overnight backpack if the situation arises. Headed to dellenbaugh so I will post as service allows. This is will be interesting- 366 replies

it will be close. there is probably 6 or 8 inches on each side for deductions for the horseshoe shaped stickers. then they have to strip the velvet. -

I wasnt going to post this because A. the video is grainy and B. it irritates the heck out of me to miss like that. But here is the video of me missing that buck I believe to be the one they just killed. You can see the horseshoe sticker on the right in the video but its a bit to grainy to see the left side. I had him several times after that within 100 yards and know its there. for the record I didnt say heck. -
