  1. The big guide groups pay a finders fee for the giant elk they take. At the very least it's open for interpretation.
  2. New here. Just moved to this great state from California via Idaho. Never hunted the Grey ghost in 33. I have the muzzleloader tag. What are your thought on lemmon canyon?

    Rifle hunts in Jan

I would. If it snows. It would be like hunting a caribou migration

(Slightly off topic) Who would waist 20 years waiting for an elk tag. I've honed my craft by hunting elk on what people consider crappy tags. I would take a 4b November archery tag every year. Back to the question. If it was a sheep tag which I am now at 20+ years of waiting. If I had a similar ethical dilemma I would immediately call g&f and proceed from there. If not available (and we are speaking hypothetically) I may use the SSS method.

Correct. There was so little meat on it that I almost left it.

It ended today. Besides all they wanted to know was that I got one for their reports

I'm with you. This is nuanced and with more degrees than it seems. For me in this instance when an animal is suffering and I have the legal ability to end it. I will. That superseded the elk in the alfalfa goal g&f set. Of course I had to 'old yeller' my horse many years ago.

The story. G&F called me last week and asked if I wanted a depredation cow tag for round valley after a minutes of thought I decided to take it. I heard it expires the 8th. What she actually said was the 5th. My wife had the show low creek hunt that expires today so it would give me the weekend to hunt. She got her elk Tuesday and I was really relaxed Wednesday until I saw the date on my tag. Last night I go to the very south end of the area and nothing. Get a semi late start from my house in show low today. Rushing to my vantage point I see a few cows just off the road by the river and figured why not. Sneaking in to where that cow is at the beginning of the thread I jump a 3 legged calf with dots in bad shape. I say to myself sh!t and take the 20 yard shot it runs 18 yards and falls over. For s&g I finish the stock on the cow and take the picture. Hardest part was deciding to rock climb out, go through the swamp, wade the creek, or go through willow jungle to get out. Willow jungle was the best. The cliffs the river the jungle before anyone says anything this hunt has a special exemption for archery hunter where you can shoot within a 1/4 mile from an occupied structure and it is encouraged to shoot the elk that are in the alfalfa.

12a archery hunt, who else got drawn?

You can get service at the edge of the canyon on the Kaibab. I would have done my bison hunt but it was boring AF.

That was like 10 years ago before everything was social media's. Heres Yesterday's cow with a 240grain Hornady at 80 yards.

A power point on a spike bull at 100 yards.

If the tag holder is happy that's all that matters. Personally, I would have held off.

    Enough moisture?

That crosses from the rez into 4b. Already with cows and in velvet.
