Hopefully its just starting. I put in for 3 javelina hunts with 100% draw odds and I don't not have any hits yet.

When you get the tag. Believe your eyes more than what people tell you. That was my biggest mistake on my hunt.

When i used to get late season archery tags. A friend called in more than a few bulls for me in November. I think there are two reasons for the later and later rut. 1st is all the females are not bred in September making them go into a second estrus cycle. 2nd and I see this with deer as well, the amount of human interaction with elk during September is extreme and forces them back a month to the less interrupted of October. Back in the 90s when archery and calling was still fringe. I would watch full rutting on September 1st.

Its been raining most of the time here in showlow for the last couple of days.

The elk and other animals are the property of the people. Free for us all to enjoy. Tag or not being around elk is not really an ethical question. We are allowed to be out there. Learning an animals patterns and your own abilities, when you do not have a tag, during the rut is a good thing that makes you a better hunter. Now that being said, its annoying AF to run into a non tag hunter with a fox pro or one of the 15 helpers to a tag holder checking bugles.

You would be in the bonus round for north of the canyon. Your odds are 5% or below for elsewhere with a rifle. Back before archery hunting was cool I got alot of tags (5) I am hoping they open up a particular unit for archery so I can go after a particular buck.

The day before you get there and the day after you leave are usually the best for the rut.

Same as now. Either the nutrition is not there or there is a lot less elk.

Nephew sent me game time updates yesterday. He was at 91 yards for a couple of hours

This year has been really dry. The nutrition just might not be there. That being said I have noticed that the rut has been getting later and later each year. I have watched full rutting in mid November.

Nope. The giant one is the stuff of legend.

Same gun she used for her elk. Pre-ww2 270 model 70 with a Leopold vx3 4x14. Hornady 140 grain. I think with the small stature of antelope the bullets did not expand as needed.
