Awesome buck! Congrats.
-
Congrats again my brother! You are definitely having an awesome year.
-
Thanks for the info brother. I have been wondering about that cause i am in the 30 point bunch as well. I just want a drama free hunt.
-
Luck of the draw! This may be hard to believe but I haven't won the lottery either. Weird??? I have only had one 10 tag even tho its always my first choice but i met several people there that drew the early archery with zero points. Did i mention i love the unit though! Haven't been over there this year but there are always some mouth dropper bulls. Can be hard to hunt but worth it for sure.
-
Depending on which side of the unit you are hunting, there are a couple of them in lakeside and wagon wheel. Also one or two in Taylor. If you cant find numbers, let me know and i will get them for you.

Unit 1 Bull Tag, Late Archery - Gonna do it!
105Coues replied to creedhunting's topic in Elk Hunting
I drew my first late archery this year 3A 3C and i am really looking forward to the hunt. That being said, i was out quite a bit last year at that time and like everyone is saying, depending on weather, i think it could be pretty good or really bad. Lots of variables for sure. I cant count the amount of shots i have missed in my life due to a wardrobe malfunction. Lol -
Soooo it was the hardest hunt in the state......so lets shorten it and make it bull only??? IM SO CONFUSED!

I had 7 and no dice....

Got a call from Game and Fish last Monday Aug 21st I'm going elk hunting in 5bs

Now that is a cool story. Congrats on the tag. Should be a great hunt. Happened to me once with a lim op bull squirrel tag. Just kidding. -
My daughter had it last year (our first time hunting it) and it was tough but we put in a lot of time and she nailed a 5point. Seemed like there were a lot of hunters everywhere we went but i am sure others know the unit way better than us. I drew a late archery tag in the unit this year so i will be out prior to yours. All hunts are good just some are better than others!

My father and I used to hunt 36B over 20 years ago and saw some great bucks. Has any other old fart hunted this unit that could comment on how it has changed over the years? I am excited to go back to my old stomping grounds.

Quality of 36B compared to 20+ years ago?

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. It sounds like it is exactly what I am expecting. Good luck to you all -

Well said. There are stud bucks taken every year in every unit. Just not as many. I don't kill said bucks but it sure is nice to see them. -

I think all the units have suffered on quality with the addition of the extra hunts since then. I know 33 has changed a lot since I was younger. The 36 units have always had great potential genetically tho. -

There were 1100 tags per hunt some years. Nut 2 butt lol but we still found nice ones. -
Was the pauns management tag a NR tag? How many points did you have?
-
Big lake is very nice, has easy paved access and the opportunity to fish. West fork is still closed and GF killed the fish in it last year to get rid of the Brown trout and i dont think they stocked it last year due to a hatchery sickness.

This will be a great hunt. Had it in 2012 and killed a 373 6x7 with 60+" main beams and a broken sword. Pics and video are on this site. Had a blast and the elk rutted harder than i have ever seen in my life. That was only the second archery bull tag i had ever drawn and i grew up here. Have not been able to draw a 10 tag since. That being said it is no cake walk and 350 min is a big order. My wife had an early bull tag the year before and kept passing good bulls and ended up shooting a 5 pt the evening of the last day. The price you pay sometimes.... Good luck friend!

22 is a great unit and close as any. The prescott area is also great country. Scouting is key....

Interesting article regarding the new Boquillas agreement

I agree. Shut it down to stop the extortion. Let it go and it will only grow. Once others see they can play the extortion game, it will grow out of control. -
Tell me your experiences with September 3A3C archery bull

Why does hornady load data seem so much lower charge weight?
105Coues replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have shot 165 308 Nosler BT for years and I tried the Hornady 155 AMAX at a grain higher charge which should have increased velocity but it did not. Lower weight projectile and more powder should mean higher velocity... My assumption after this and also noticing the Hornadys left more copper in the barrel is that they had more drag while in the barrel than the Noslers. They did shoot tight groups though.....
