I shot this buck Sunday morning at 448 yards from one hilltop to the other. He has three extra trash points and alot of mass which gives him some character. I gross scored him at 103 2/8". This is the biggest bodied deer I have ever shot. It was an awesome hunt! We saw alot of young bucks and I passed a 90+ incher on Saturday morning. The weather was excellent.

On my nephews first hunt he used a 223 of mine. There are premium bullets on the market if you handload that do suprisingly well. He shot a spike at 230 yards right behind the shoulder and the bullet passed completely through. The deer jumped and fell. Normally I would not condone such a small caliber rifle but it is very important to teach kids to shoot accurately and they will not if they are flinching due to recoil. A good hit with a small caliber is better than a bad hit with a magnum. I will have a daughter hunting soon and she will be using the 223. Good luck and happy hunting

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?
105Coues replied to DesertBull's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
DiamondbackAZ, I must have gotten ahold of a different fee proposal than you did. Mine says the license and tag would cost 117.00 per person, not 50. Like the writers before me, I don't drink or have new equipment but I do hunt very seriously and I am sure we hunt for the same reasons. Hunting is a great way for families to enjoy nature together and spend quality time. We hunters need to stick together if we are to keep hunting. Well I'm going hunting. -
Seen the fee proposals for 2006?

All I will say is that if you are opposed to the fee increases, you had better make yourself heard by emailing or attending one of the meetings. The G&F took a survey last year on the increases and I beleive around 85% of the replies were opposed to it. The only thing they will listen to is a mob of people writing them. The absence of opposition is considered support by the department. I sure hate to see the department make hunting a rich mans sport. A family of four will have to pay an obscene amount of cash to apply for multiple species. At least it is obscene for me, maybe you guys make more than I do? My 2 cents. -
Congrats!

Awesome buck by the way. Good luck on yours.

Come on guys, You need to all learn to keep a secret and not let the nonresidents know about the potential of this unit. Now they will all want in on the action.

That is an awesome find!! All I usually find are weaner buck antlers. I killed a 160lb. tom in 33 in 94 and its measurements added up to 14 6/8".

I just had some more this last weekend. My father was stalking some pigs and we were talking on radios about the pigs. Some guy comes on the radio and says " I'm glad your finding them because we aren't seeing any over here. These guys must have been scanning channels on a GMRS radio to find us. We were on channel 18 Sub Channel 7. The odds of them convieniently being on the same channel but never talking for the first two hours of daylight are slim. Then they proceded to move in on us and chase the pigs everywhere. I feel for the people that suck at hunting so bad that they have to follow others around.

If this passes, a lot of the "LEGAL ACCESS" that we take for granted now will surely be locked up.

These people you speak of are in almost every whitetail hunt I go on. My wife's second deer she killed was on the ground across the canyon from us and had been motionless for at least ten minutes before one of the sound chasers came across it and shot it twice, once in the ear and once in the gut. This was only an hour after another guy yelled "Seen anything!!" and scared the first deer she was going to shoot off (unit 33). Another day I watched nine hunters from my pre-dawn perch as they fanned out like British soldiers determined to take the hill I was on. I was fortunate and killed a 98" buck just as they topped the hill (unit 33). I glassed a nice buck in 36A only to have three guys come up behind us and see where we were looking. While we were in position to shoot the deer and were waiting for him to get up that evening. The same three idiots who came up behind us walked all the way around to the other side of the deer and jumped him up. They let lead fly and one of the guys actually hit him on the run. I could go on and on.. I feel your pain!!!! I only hope that you guys express your position of the hunts being overcrowded to the G&F dept. Or maybe someone should call Taulman and have him pull some strings for us. He is obviously in tight with them since they did absolutely nothing to address the nonresident problem. If Lark ever writes his book, I have some comical yet disturbing stories for him.

I can only hope to kill one that nice with my bow some day. Congrats!!

I went out on the first and got into one herd right off the bat. The wind changed in mid stalk and they won. I found another herd about an hour later and stalked to within 40 yards. I waited for a shot and it finally presented itself. I nailed him quartering away and he went about 50 feet and fell over dead. After taking care of him, I went varmint calling and killed a couple dogs(coyotes). It was a pretty awesome weekend! Good luck to everyone going back out!

Attaboy Lark!! When is that book comin' out?

AZONECAM is right on in my book. Data is nice for a starting point but the only way to know for sure and gain your shooting confidence is to fire it at each distance and record your findings. I do this and then put a small cheat sheet for quick reference on my stock. I hope this helps.

I have a Nikon XL spotter and have been very happy with it as a mid grade choice for a spotting scope.
