    March bears

I've done that for 3 or 4 years now and always call. However, I Have yet to hook up on a March bear. They do start coming out in some areas, as shed hunters will report fresh tracks they come across. They usually feed on grass and don't move around too much. I buy that OTC spring bear tag as an insurance policy, just in case I run into one while scouting out areas for the spring archery only bear hunt that follows that early open season.

    Two down plus a question

About 20 years ago, I came across a little red like that and bent down to kidnap and raise the little critter. It instantly threw up all of its hair and began popping its tiny teeth at me and I thought it was goining to take off my fingertip! I wisely backed down and a vain 170 pound teenager was completely schooled by a miniscule 1-2 pound piglet!

    Two collector guns

Two of my "collector" guns just taking up space. Maybe you can turn a worthwhile profit on these items at the Crossroads of the West gun show this weekend or market them yourself at other venues. I have shot them both and they are fun shooters. The Winchester is especially collectable. 1. Browning A5 autoloader 12 guage. Serial number (B14###) dates it to 1940-1945 when these shotguns were made in the USA in the Remmington factory, I think, due to German occupation of Belgium. Has a polychoke on its barrel tip. $500 2. Winchester 1906 pump .22 expert model. This is the rarest of the three 1906 models and had nickel plating as an option. Original wood and finish. Has an after market iron sight, but I have the correct sight that came with the rifle, but have never had it put back on. Serial numbers match (651###) and date it to 1926, I think. $600 You can buy them both for $1,000 or could be open to trade for

    unit 33 javelina

I thought for sure I was going to find a den of rattlesnakes in that cave, but fortunately, I didn't. I kept Lance in mind when he went into a mine shaft after his archery bear last spring and thought that this couldn't be any worse! Killed a black widow when I was up to my waist in the "squeeze hole."

    My first Javelina

Or simply put the arrow back into its spot when it is done. Did that on my face-shot bear and it is pretty interesting to look at with a 5 inch shaft sticking out where the bear whacked it off.

My camera didn't make it....burned up.

I had a sweet bear canyon in Four Peaks that burned to a similar extent back in late 80's or early 90's. Only about 2% of canyon still held vegetation. I continued annual trips into the canyon to monitor regrowth and it took 12 years before the vegetation was thick enough and solidly reproducing to lure bear back into it. And bear have used it every year since then. It will be fun for you to make one trip a year into your spot and photograph and monitor the regrowth and the return of wildlife into the area.

    Blew My Chance

No, I was not relieving myself. I have a cheap and effective, but definitely too small in size, pop-up turret blind. I can only lay down inside its boundaries if I curl up in a fetal position, or lie on my back with my legs bent upwards. Anyways, I cleared a nice 8 x 10 foot section of forest floor directly in front of my blind's door and built up walls of fallen timber around its perimeter about 4 feet in height. That way, I could lay down and relax outside of my blind with plenty of room and still be in a natural-made blind with plenty of cover. The problem arose in that I decided to leave that still safe outer area and go inside my enclosed pop-up blind as the bull was coming straight towards me. I was afraid he would get too close and see me behind my walled fortress due to his extreme height, as he was on an elk trail that passed within two feet of my blind. In hind sight, I should have held my ground and stayed put, and probably would have had a 2 or 3 yard shot as he passed by me, but I panicked and felt that I needed a roof over my head so I would not be seen. Go figure. I blew it because I was afraid the bull would get too close and figure me out for what I was...a hunter.

    Blew My Chance

Sat my ground blind all day Friday with nothing but crows and squirrels coming in to visit. Saturday around 9 am I heard a rock roll, while I was outside of my blind, and looked up to see an elk at 50 yards coming in quick. I peeked up to watch for antlers and saw the bottoms of them as the tops were in the tree branches. By now he was at 30 yards and cl;osing, so I grabbed my bow and quickly crawled into my blind. However, my didn't raise my second knee high enough and it cought the bottom edge of the blind, causing the entire blind to move, making a terrible racket on a noiseless morning. I heard a commotion and looked out. The bull had spooked and ran diagonally away from me,ehind two pine trees quartering away. All I could see from my angle was his back half. I panicked and drew my bow back, but my arrow was pointing out the blind's window and the bull apparently saw the movement and was gone. Lessons learned for next year. No meat, but an adrenaline rush all the same.

    Nice Bear

Was working to pattern this bear with a friend for our archery elk hunt this Friday, but had bandits break into the trail cam and steal the SD card. Debating whether or not to hunt for him or a bull elk this weekend. Without the collected data, it is a tougher call to make.

Great job! It has been a crazy year with bears that low in elevation this late into the season. Have to love the 3 hour pack out to earn the bear, though!
