Love the Triton-XL's. They are a step up from the regular Tritons. I shoot the 100 grain XL's and love them! Hope to put them through an elk this winter!

The bi-colored bear, very pretty.

I love the golden rust color of your bear, beautiful photo! Did you measure him from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail? What were they feeding on in that regrowth area? Are there berries around, or were they flipping rocks for insects?

Very nice color! Any more pics?

Sweet job Mady! My longest shot ever was 250 yards! I guess I need to hit the range and practice if I ever hope to even take a 300 yard shot! Sweet skills on that trigger!

That second bear has a color phase to die for!!! Is that a 2-bear limit area, or did you shoot one and your buddy shoot the other, but you went ahead and posed by both of them?
-
YES, certainly do not be bummed out over that beautiful color scheme! I am salivating!

Experiences with a .338 win mag / Suggestions for wet weather?
kidso posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I am planning an Alaskan brown bear hunt for fall of 2017. I am interested in using a .338 win mag so it could also double as an elk gun in our state. Because I mostly hunt archery now, I have not followed industry changes in centerfire rifles. I do not build guns, nor do I reload, but I am interested in purchasing a solid factory .338 win mag that is basically weatherproof and could handle rain and snow without failing. Anyone have any advice on great guns for wet weather hunting based on their own personal experiences? Any comments on the new Savage line or Mossberg centerfire rifles? I see Mossberg has a 4x4 .338 win mag for around $400 bucks and Savage has a 116 Trophy Hunter .338 for $150 more with an included Nikon scope. Anyone have any experiences with these lower priced rifles? I do have a Browning A-bolt Stalker in .300 win mag, which I love, but want to use a bit more THUMP than that for brown bear. I might just get another A-bolt Stalker in .338 or a Remmington 70, but was curious about the Savage and Mossberg models I brought up. Thanks.- 27 replies

Units like 23 are quite interesting with their increased hunting pressures and low sow quotas. These early closings, typically with sows and younger bears being harvested, actually buy time for bigger bears, that might be a bit smarter than the smaller ones, to grow even larger. There are plenty of BIG bears in 23, especially where one has to pack in for a couple of hours off a forest service access road, where houndsmen and e-calling symphonies won't be part of the picture. It will open again!

Multiple e-callers? Bears won't come into a concert arena!!

Nice color-phase. What did he do with the other half?

Now, that is the picture I was looking for!!! (The hide in the grass during the day!) -
Say yes to SUCCESS!!!!! Great job and nice shot. The rug will be awesome! Are you hooked on bears now?

Holy crap, I can't shoot worth beans beyond 200 yards!! Would love to see that hide in the light to see how light it as, since you described him as "elk color." Beautiful bear! What are your plans for mounting him? -
Depends on your definition of "decent" for bears. You already took a beast and could chase his shadow for another 20 years, or you can start thinking about the variety of color phases available and chase after them. Your tag, your call. That being said, that blonde looks sweet and is a little bigger than you think...it is just so far away in your picture that size estimation is difficult. Get out into the field and make your decision when the bears come; no need for desk-top hunting here!

Light sandy brown cinnamon or darker reddish-brown cinnamon? -
Agreed with the 300 pound weight and badly rubbed. Would be a tough one to rug, but great for a shoulder mount.

Why in the world would you be camping out at Four Peaks this weekend, especially in this hot, gnat infested weather?
