    Quest for a dove

Shot my 40 lb Bear 43 times last night. Got some tail feathers but no dead birds. I thought I would only try it once but now am hooked and want to get one more then ever.

    iPad for checking trail cameras.

I am so happy that I saw this post. I too am sick of trying to look at pictures on my camera's screen. I didn't even realize that there is an adapter for the Ipad. I have a nice hard case to transport it in so I just ordered to adapter to check picture. I hope it works well.
  3. I am looking for a Brittany Spaniel breeder in the area who sells pups. I live in Las Cruces New Mexico and would like to find someone within 500 miles who breeds good hunting dogs. Lost my last dog about a year ago and am finally ready to find a new pup to train up and get in the field. Haven't been able to find too many breeders in New Mexico and Arizona online and was wondering if anyone had experience buying from a local breeder who may be able to get me the dog I am looking for.
  4. I've been hunting muleys in the Sacs but haven't been able to put the smack down on a monster yet. Put the stalk on a couple this year during the archery season but just wasn't able to close the deal.
  5. Great job man. Every post you make makes me think I need to stop spending so much time in the Sacramentos and head to the Gila.

    turkeys

I figure they must be freeze dried. I had a big eastern mounted about five years ago and went with a replica and regret it every time I see a freeze dried head. I guess I know which route I will definitely will be going when I get my next bird mounted. Hopefully it will be a big merriams in full strut.
  7. Thanks everyone for the information. I am still probably about 5 months out from being ready for a pup, since my house is still being built and I won't be able to get one. I will absolutely start making some calls though to see when people have litters coming in.

Those heads look awesome. Just wondering what process you use to do those? Great job on the mounts they look great.

    What broadhead do you use?

I use Rage 2 blades. I have shot one muley, four turkeys, and over a dozen whitetails with this head and have had really good luck. I have used muzzy and montecs in the past but keep coming back to range since they are easier to tune. It doesn't matter what head you use as long as you tune your bow, know their limits, stick it in the boiler room.

    San Carlos Gobbler!!

Congratulations on the hunt. there is nothing better than putting the smackdown on a big old bird. Your story got me really excited and impatient for New Mexico to open. I need to get my Merriams to finish up my slam.

    best call for spring turkey

It is all about what you can run and make sound good. Over the last few years I have acquired a ton of really nice calls. I still mix it up though. I like diaphragms for either really loud calling or in close shots where I can't move. Slate is my ultimate go to call though. Easy to use and works in almost any condition. It is also easy to change the pitch on these by using different strikers. Box calls are also very easy to use. Just remember. It isn't actually necessary to get the most expensive call on the market right a way. They may sound better to you in the long run but some turkeys just don't care. I killed many birds using a call I paid 7 dollars for out of the bargain bin at wal mart when I was 14. It isn't going to win any awards but I can make it sound good and the toms seem to love it.

    NM Oryx!!!!

Congrats on the tag. I have to say though that I am extremely jealous. Just saw that my money was refunded to my bank account and that I didn't draw

    Custom Calls

azslim Just reread your post and saw your link for someone in Florida. Thanks for the heads up.

    Custom Calls

I have a hobby of buying custom turkey calls. I like to buy them from the states that I have hunted in. Needless to say I have a lot of calls from Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois. I am looking for custom call makers in New Mexico and Arizona so I can add to my collection. I haven't been able to find much just doing some internet searches. I planned on asking around at the NWTF banquets but thought I would ask here to see what everyone has and what is their favorite working or ornamental turkey calls.

    Custom Calls

Thanks for the input guys. I am looking for custom calls from the places that I have hunted so Arizona and New Mexico (especially New Mexico since I have three hunts here and no call to show for it) are top of my list right now. If anyone has a hookup in Florida I would also be interested seeing as I am going for an Osceola there this year. (Just confirmed the trip and couldn't be more excited) Good luck everyone this spring. Hopefully the turkey gods smile on you all and old grey beard doesn't give you the slip
  16. I am a resident of New Mexico wishing to apply with a Non Resident for hunting licenses. Just wondering if their is a way to do this or not. Haven't looked to much in the rules book but lets face it sometimes that is more confusing than it is helpful. I figured I would ask here since people here are usually very helpful and probably will be able to explain it in laymens terms. Any help is appreciated

    Group applications

Thanks for the info. That is what I figured based on what I was reading but just wanted to make sure I read it correctly. Looks like we will both just put in as seperate. If we both draw awesome. If he draws and I don't I'll just go along and help out.

    Wisconsin

So after six years of applying I was finally drawn for a coveted Wisconsin bear tag. Unfortunately I moved away from the state and at this time do not know if I will be able to return and hunt. I figured some of you hard core bear guys might enjoy some pictures from the baits though. Here are a couple that my "guides" back home have sent me enjoy.

    Gunna Go Postal!

I think you acted pretty reasonably. I have had two cameras stolen this year. It really sucks when people mess with your stuff. The first one that was stolen cost me 300 and I had only had it for a week. The next one cost around two hundred and I was able to manage 50 pics off it before it was jacked. I am now stuck using cameras that cost around 100 hoping and praying they aren't stolen. I would have probably confronted the guy myself. Although I have a pretty bad temper when people mess with myself so it probably wouldn't have been pretty. Kudos for you for just moving their stuff and not destroying their property

    Wisconsin

Well I got lucky and am leaving tomorrow for 12 days of nothing but bear hunting and hanging out with the family. Hopefully in 12 days I can post pictures of a monster bruin for you all

    New Mexico 34

Hello everyone. So I drew a rifle tag for 34 in New Mexico. I have never been Mule deer hunting before and am looking forward to the hunt. My question however is where are these deer? I have been scouting all summer long and have seen tons of elk but only a couple of deer. I put out trail cameras and only have elk to show for it. Just for the record I have been scouting hard around Cloudcroft and the Sunspot area. The only other place I have been hunting in New Mexico is unit 17 where I saw a lot of deer but few elk. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to look at lower elevations in the transition areas?

    New Mexico 34

Thanks for the info guys I really appreciate it. These past fews years have thrown me a pretty steep curve ball in how to hunt. I went out yesterday scouting an area and was finally able to pin down some deer. It is amazing how many you can find when you are looking in the right area. Put the camera out to so hopefully in a few weeks I will have some pictures to help me out as well.

    New Mexico 34

Thanks for the help. I was talking to a guy at work who said he used to hunt around Timberon when it was over the counter so I was going to check it out on my next days off. In all reality I am looking for what kind of terrain to look for these guys in. I have seen a lot of deer in the dessert and around Ruidoso but they still elude me in 34. I figured in three months worth of putting cameras out I would find something in the high country but I only got elk pictures. Do you look for the transition area where desert meets high timber or elsewhere? I grew up in the midwest where finding whitetails wasn't that hard, the hard part was figuring out their core areas and travel patterns.
