There is a fellow who has a wild hog hunting ranch on the San Pedro just south of Reddington road in the Cascabel area. Sometimes they get out of his place and become fair game for the rest of us.

C/W member says his card got hit
coueshunter84 replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
As of yesterday my account was still down $383. And I have gone through everything I have paperwork wise on the application. And I can only find 3 applications, ONe archery elk , one archery antelope, and one jr. elk. I'm so confused. Dont know whether to be happy or not. I wont be able to check the account again until Monday. -

That might explain why my card got hit 2 times. I would rather then give me a jr elk tag for the youngster instead of refunding the second set of tags. As the bank told me both transactions have gone through aleady. But I guess if they want to give me both sets I will take them. LOL>.. Maybe auction them off on here. LOL>. -

$ 191.50= One archery bull and one archery antelope. But according to the bank they hit me twice for that amount. Dont make sence, as the only other application on that account was for jr elk. Which is by the way a $50 tag. to answer the above question. Maybe I will get 4 tags in the mail. LOL..... Do you think they would notice?? AS long as the kiddo get her jr elk tag I will be happy. Although drawing both archery elk and speed goat in the same year is quite the coupe... -
Beautiful, No doubt about it. Just wondering why they do not differentiate between the Desert/ Rocky Mountain sheep, and the Goulds/ Merriams. That would bump it up to 12...LOL.. 13 if you also threw in the Desert/ Rocky Muleys. HMMM. We do have them all. Now if they could just throw some goats and moose up around the San Fransicos we could really have fun trying to get tags.

AZ Game and Fish releases survey results
coueshunter84 replied to Huntin'AZ's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'm done, There is no way to appease everyone. I dont envy the position the G&F is in. I do not liek the changes they are making , but realise that other folks do. And no matter hwo the survey was worded. there are a whole bunch of folks who believe that way. Especially the folks who havent had a tag in an ungodly amount of years, the USO types who make a living on our hunting bonanza, the out of staters who want that once in a lifetime " western adventure" and the list goes on. Not many folks have the pateince to wait for a tag and believe they should have one every year. And the G&F also seem to be money hungry. Maybe its just the way were precieving it. Its all in the point of view. Most the folks on here would probably be classified in the unusually dedicated catagory. Meaning we dont mind waiting a couple of years for a quality tag. but boy wouldnt it be nice to draw a Dec tag every year. or your unit 9 archery bull tag. Wouldnt hurt my feelings either. But I know its not going to happen and I'm ok with that. to a point. I have not seen an elk tag since 01 or a rifle coues tag since 02, I have never drawn an antelope tag here in AZ and it took me 10 years to draw my first turkey tag ever this year. My kids are however doing pretty good on tags sor far. Last year I had one wanting to hunt and she drew the javy tag she wanted, and had an otc archery deer tag also. This year I now have 2 who will be hunting as both drew first choice on both javy and turkey. I'm kind of saddened by the fact that my hunting will now start ebbing off as they get older and hopefully want to hunt more. But its pretty cool to know I have instilled it in them. I dont know, really I just dont know. Where do we go from here? -

TRiesgo, Good deal. And again the second pic looks even more like the one were after. Way cool, And yes my daughter is getting very good at giving me gray hair. It was her decision to hunt with the recurve, and to put flourescent pink and chartruse shield cut feathers on her arrows of course over the flame arrow wraps. LOL.. I really need to get pics of her set up. Everyone on here would get a kick out of it. Good luck on tagging that muley. I hope to see pics from you also. -

TRiesgo, That fellow looks pretty familiar, Were you in unit 32? Just curious, as my 13 y/o daughter has been after a buck that could be his twin with her recurve. Just havent been able to get within the 25 yards she needs yet. Close several times but still not quite. Day before yesterday he had 4 does with him. Got within 35 yards and almost stepped on a yearling...LOL.. If it does happen to be the same buck Good luck , this next weekend we have permission to sit on one of those dirt tanks on the private to the East. Maybe just maybe he will hit the same one they have been hitting. So if you see a little pop up on one of those tanks its probably us. -
ndaniel, What type of target do you have? I would bet that you have a piece of an arrow in there somewhere. Maybe a misplaced fieldtip, insert, or something, or she shot more then one arrow at the target and hit another head. from what I seen this year those blades are pretty stout. The one I hit my pig with this year had no damage to the blades at all after going through all that bone (hip socket, femur head, back bone, ribs and all). its was just a little dull, to the point where it still shaved hair with all the blades but you kind of had to force it. So the blades got replaced and the tip got touched up with a diamond hone and an Arkansas oil stone. The tip is a needle again and the new blades take hair easily. And it still spins perfectly. Cant ask for much better then that. If you have the chance I would replace any blades she has already shot, except mabey one or 2 heads, and use those for practice and leave the rest spun up and ready to kill with. That way she can still practice with her broadheads , without dulling any of her hunting arrows. And carry an extra bunch of blades with you when she hunts, One shot and they need to be replaced. Thats one bad thing about heads that you cannot resharpen yourself. You have to have extra blades. And might paper tune it again if those heads are hitting that far from the field points. Her rest or knocking point might be off a little. Or during the off season take it to a shop and get it tuned up good. The shop I use ran $75 per bow last year for new custom string, and cables, and what he calls a " supertune" where he takes everything apart , lubes everything and recenters the rest and the peep on the new string . Never have any problems with anything flying different other then increased drag on the blades causing them to drop a little faster, as in the case of the T-locs with me. Out past 50 yards they start dropping off just a little. Maybe a couple of inches compared to the ultimate steels and mechs. enough to notice it that far out but no difference to speak of closer then that. Greyghost, Same thing with the 75gr. untimate steels. You have to crank them in pretty good to get that little keeper washer to stay put and not release the blades. If you look at the heads when you put them together it does not take much movement at the tail end of the flange to get the tip to release from under the front, so any movement fo the head will cause them to turn loose Just make sure that you take care of the arrow shaft while tightening them. I use a piece of 7-9 ounce leather and a good pair of sidelock pliers, the red loc-tite, and a broadhead wrench that has a handle on it. Once you get them really tight you should not ahve to worry about losing another blade. Just make sure you spin them before you put them in your quiver. I have found that if you actually try to turn the insert while doing this then thats about how tight it needs to be. Granted I do not look forward to replacing the blades on them, but dont want to lose another blade, so I deal with it. Kind of a royal pain in the posterior to get them all in, but once you get it finished LOL.. You already know what kind of damage they can do with 2 of the 3 blades missing, think of what it would have looked like if all 3 had stayed intact. Oh and if your shooting with the HIT system from Easton or the other one , make sure the inserts were not set all the way in. The last couple of packages of the untimate steels I bought. state in the "warnings" not to use them in the HIT system. I just either hav ethe inserts set a little shallower or buy them cut and do it myself. They have short shanks and will only get a few threads if any at all unless you do something to work it along with those arrows. Good luck and good hunting.

ndaniel, Which head did she use? And not picking, but should probably change the blades before hunting with any head shot into a target or anything else. The only heads I have found that do not dull after hitting a target ( to the point where they will still shave hair after 30 or so shots into a block) are the steel force titaniums. But I send them back to get sharpened just ebfore the seasons anyway. My wife shoots them out of her Bowtec stalker lite. And the Shuttle T-locs do a fine job on the javys. Got mine this year with one and did not have any problems with the head at all. She jumped the string the first shot and required a second arrow, the only shot I had the second time was as near a Texas heart shot as you can get. The T-loc took out the right rear hip socket 2 vertabre and a couple of ribs before exiting, and was intact when I picked it up. After washing the arrow all it required was one fletching and new blades, and its back in the quiver waiting on a whitetail. Ultramag, The secret to the Ultimate steels is a pair of pliers and a strong broadhead wrench. I had to stick a muley in Oregon several years ago 3 times, lost 2 blades off of the first head, all 3 off of the second, and 2 off of the third. When I got back home and told my story to a cousin of mine he showed me how its done. The heads have to be extremely tight in the shaft to hold that short little shank on the blades into the ferrel. Also might not hurt to loc-tite them in. After that I have had no problems, with the 4 animals I have taken with them since. Take a towel or a piece of leather and wrap it around the shaft before you apply the pliers. Oh and dont forget the little keeper washer, that will mess the whole thing up on you also.

border story in the news
coueshunter84 replied to russd's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I believe that military mind would call that a diversion. While everyone is dealing with a position being overrun, you run the old end around play and get all your product into the US without harassment. Just more evidence that the Mexican military is part of the problem. Sounds like an invasion to me by folks who have some military training. I hope our folks got some good licks in. If this keeps up we might just be on the front lines. -
You can apply for tags at any age, and the G&F will take your money as far as I know?? However they must turn 10 before they finish the hunters safety class. And they must carry the card with them while hunting until they are 14 to prove they have the class. Going through that right now for the second time. My 9y/o has both a javalina and turkey tag. She turns 10 on Feb 4th, so I had to put her in for the general season, and find a class that finishes after that date. I had to do the same thing with my oldest, couple of years ago. She drew an archery javy tag, and was not able to hunt unitl she had the card in her hands. They would not give her the card after she finished the field day, even though she passed the final test on the 8th I think it was. If I remember correctly they had to mail the card. I think the first day I was able to get her out was about 4 days after that. That year was quite frusterating. This time around I was able to plan it better. Good luck with the kids. Its a blast having them along.

I have found them to be a little louder then the other fixed heads I use (rocket ultimate steel 100's). And they have just enough more drag to start messing with my sight out past 50. CLoser then that and they shoot right with the ultimate steels and the mechs I use. I havent hit anything with them yet, but a couple of my family have and had no problems with them at all.

And who says Javies aren't mean little boogers??
coueshunter84 replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
In all the years I have worked in the EMS business here in AZ. I have transported 5 people who have been "attacked" by Javies. ONe of those was a 3 year old who was on her back porch at the wrong time. took about 3000 stitchs for the plastic surgeon to put her face/head/and neck back together. All of the others were leg injuries, most of which were pretty significant injuries. One of which I believe ended up losing the leg. So for those who like to feed them in their back yard( garbage cans, dog food, cat food. included).. dont let your kids outside at night. and if you go outside at night watch your step. -
How old was your deer? If the deer was old enough then it could have been any one of a number of ailments. Heart disease or anything else along those lines. Might have been a sick deer. or maybe had some sort of genetic problem. Animals get quite a few ailments, alothough most of them are fatal real early, and the rest fall into the " if it dosent kill them it makes them stronger" catagory. And like every other animal on the planet they are suspetable to old age. So could have been anything. even the "soft heart".

Boy now thats a big ole can of worms. Any of you who hunt the northern part of unit 32 and are havin gto pay for access now to the private ground. Well thats mostly the " rotten apples" of the OHV world causing that one. Not neccessarily hunters. But guess who end up paying for it. Back to the tags. I would not mind paying a little more to make sure G&F are hiring and keepign quality wardens and other people. Its just that the fee increase is quite significant over one years time. Was this caused by mismanagement over the past couple of years, or greed this year? Thats the question I would like answered. If it was mismanagement over the past couple of years then I kind of understand the increase. But if they are just greedy, then we need to stake them to a pole. But either way I'm still in the same boat with the fees. And no I dont have to put in for every animal, and neither do my children or my wife. But with the rates of drawing a tag. can you find another way for me to get them out and hunting, and try to pass along the heritage that I grew up with. I havent figured that one out yet. And its kind of hard not pass on eating out a couple of times a year or so when you dont eat out in the first place. I just dont think it make sence to want to increase hunters and passing it along to our youngsters and then raise the rates to where we cant afford the tags. I will figure out how to apply for as many tags as I can. and will probably be able to swing everyone applying for whatever they wish to apply for. But OUCH!!!! And with the first applications ( and the most expensive ) now coming right after Christmas, and right before I get my taxes back. that is not going to be fun in any sence of the word. But I will make it work if I can. So my kids can hopefully get out there and hunt. And right now they wish to hunt more then they wish to go to Disneyland. And maybe just maybe if they can draw a few tags I can keep it that way.

Just sitting here adding figures, Family license Wife, me, 2 oldest girls. $137.20 Deer tags x 4 + 2 archery tags. $ 238.50 Antelope tags x 4 $340 Elk tags 3 reg and 1 jr. $422 Javy tags, 3 reg 1 jr $51.25 TUrkey, 1 reg 2 jr. $60 Lion tags x2 $29 Sheep tags x 2 $544 Granted this is everyone drawing everything, But the grand total comes out to $1822.25 That of course does not include anything other then the tags and licenses. Add to that fuel, camping supplies, ammo, wear and tear on vehicles, clothing ( kids need new camo and boots about ever year). And everything else required. That makes it very hard for a large family to hunt. Whats next a lottery at home to see who gets to put in. I still have 2 more youngsters waiting in the wings for their #10 b-days. I know for some of you this is chump change, but grief. do we want to pass our hunting heritage on or not. Even with the "jr. " hunts added in . My oldest wants to put a bull on the wall before I do. There are no jr. Bull elk hunts. Try explaining to a 12 year old why she has to apply for cow only. I thought I was doing pretty good until she threatened to run an arrow through me. How is that fair? If those of you who conscider this chump change wish to pitch in. I would be more then happy to to take hand outs. Or have you explain why taxidermy is out of the question for the 360 bull the oldest runs an arrow through come next Sept. . Take a kid hunting,,,, But only if you can afford it!!!
-
Yes!!! fun!!!! try this with 4 hunters in the family, and 2 more waiting on the #10 b-day. Its going to be real fun trying to get everyone who wants to hunt applied come Jan. I will be applying for 4 elk and 4 antelope. Add the cost of the licenses and that adds up real quick. And then again for the rest of the fall hunts, as at least 2 of us will be putting in for sheep this year. Not real fun when you add those prices up on a working mans salary. thats a big chunk of change.

I am not sure how the State Land Dept. sells the land. But I do know that the majority of the monies that come from from State land, Come from those leasing the land. ie Ranchers. That is the day to day and year to year monies that are always there. An dwill be until they get ranching abolished here. Which is what Prop 204 was about. And like stated above, its the Humane Society of the US, and Peta behind that one. Not anywhere on paper that I was able to find. But that what happened in Florida. thats the initial stepping stone of this round. They started with trapping now they are back. Add that to the Props dealing with the state trust lands, and you have quite the conspiracy going. Think of it this way. Most of the lands we hunt here in AZ are leased by ranchers. What happens when the ranchers are gone, and The Nature Conservency owns the whole state. If I remember correctly only about 10% of the state is currently private Not counting the Reservations or goverment land.. The rest is forest, state, federal. We cant hunt on Goverment,BIA, or Federal ( the national monuments) so they dont have to worry about those lands. But if they can run the ranchers off the lands they lease, and get the rest sold off to developers. Then we're out. They are attacking from several angles. Until we can get everyone on the same page, they will continue. And if they can attack each segment one at a time, we're doomed. And the real fun thing about all of this is they have 10 and 20 year plans. They are way to patient with things. ONe at a time. Attack on a different front each time. With the same overall goal the whole time. its all about being Vegans, and outsourcing ever natural resource we use here in the U.S.A. BE afraid very very afraid. -
My apologies also for "hijacking " your thread. I guess that means I get classified as a goofball also. Seriously. Your in for quite the adventure getting into archery, and doing it the "right way" and to do that I guess you have to be a little off. Kind of like the rest of us. As stated above you dont need loads of money to get started. My first bow was a $25 yardsale special Bear Polar II. About 40" axle-axle with training wheels ( the first round cams). I shot it for years and actually took a doe with it back when the Jan seasons allowed that. And I was still shooting the ( cough, gag, Choke. Gasp gasp.) metal arrows. Of course with the $3 a package Wally World broadheads. And fingers no less, without a sight. And Yes I still have that whole set up. Its in the closet. I break it out every once in a while and get back to my roots, shooting instinctivly. Which is actually kind of refreshing the couple of times a year I do it. To the point where I'm actually thhinking about useing it for Javies if I draw a tag for 07. But with that said its hard not to want to upgrade after you get started. The old if it isnt broke dont fix( replace) it. is a hard rule not to break in this field. The "newest" equipment on the block is akways so very shiny and enticing. Seeing how I use all my willpower up while actually hunting I usually dont have much left to avoid the newest gadgets. As for shops. I have no idea about any in the Valley. There are several in Tucson. the one I use and another one posted by Bobbyo. There is also a couple of shop in Safford. One at Gils outdoors, and another one I cant remember. Either way you should visit as many as you can and shoot everything. The way the maunfacturers work you will have to hit many shops to see a wider variety of equipment. Each one will try and sell you on what they have. Dont let them unless it feels good to shoot. Same thing with those of us on here. We have already figured out what feels good to us, ( Hoyt for me) I really like Bowtec. but cannot stand how they feel in my hands. Same thing with Matspews . and PSE. Nothing wrong with them, they just suck. err. dont feel good in my hands. LOL.. So go and may the force be with you. Good luck on your endeavour. Shane

Congrats, Now if I can just get you guys from putting ridge lines in pics. I will talk to Robert about that one He knows better. LOL..
-
Elmergoo, I have a $20 bill and a 120 yard pin. Bring it on. First one who connects with the cash keeps it. LOL Oh and I shoot Hoyts.
-
First things first. Where are you at? That so folks can pitch in with shops local to you. Thats the important part. Start with a good archery shop. I use Shooters Edge in Tucson. its on 29th just East of Swan, Right next to The Marksman pistol range. Find a good shop and they will measure you for draw length, after that it wont take but a few minutes to find a starting draw weight. Then after you get your length figured out. Shoot every bow they will let you shoot. Pay attention to how they feel in your hands, and how you think they shoot. Then go find another shop and shoot everything they will let you. A good reputable shop should let you shoot about anything you want. ( I hope your not a lefty) Then go to another shop and do it all over again. YOu will have to hit several different shops to get all the different brands of bows. And dont discount brands you havent heard about or arent main stream. Darton for instance. Figure out what feels best and shoot best for you. Dont listen to anyone on here about which type of bow. ( I shoot Hoyts) Go with whatever the shops have in your price range. And find the one you want that way. Every bow maker out there today has quality equipment in several price ranges. Go with what feels good to you and fits your wallet. Then you get to choose accessories. For that you can come back here and I'm sure we can twist you in several hundred directions. LOL. And that aside from what they will try and sell you at the shop. Oh and the " the arrows are reusable so it wont keep costing that much" only works for so long. After that one wears out your on your own. Hopefully the boss lady will understand by then.. Again get what feels good. And dont settle for the first one you get your hands on. You might end up going back to that one, but dont stop there the first time around. Good luck,, And oh the best advice I can give you. Stick to the rifle. LOL
-
Bummer, I would have really liked to see that one when it happened just to see her face. If she has any understaning of the lingo or just sat there waiting her turn to speak again to ask him what recoil means. LOL.. Either way that classic. Nothing like slapping someone down ad they might not even know that it happened. LOL
