This hunt took place in 2005. My Daughter was 13 at the time and drew a tag on her second try. Talk about luck. It took me 17 years to draw my first tag and that was for my second choice. As luck would have it my Father drew a tag for the same hunt. Being that my Father has always been a meat hunter, he has never tagged out on a bull bigger than a 300 6x6. So I convinced him to hold out for a 320 or better. We hunted hard for five days and passed on 15 bulls before my Father shot his bull at last daylight. The following morning my Daughter and I decided to do some glassing before we went to help my Father and brothers pack out the bull when we glassed up a big 6x6 about a half mile east of my Fathers bull. We put the bull to bed and then rushed down to help my Father and brothers quarter the bull (and to keep them quiet). It was 12:30 when we stared after the bull. To get to the bull we had to make an extended hike and I was getting tired, so I asked My daughter if she wanted to continue or to try for him the first thing in the morning. She said "we are all ready here lets keep going". My eyes kind of watered up. One because I was proud of her response and two because I was a hurting puppy I then grabbed her rifle and her pack and started to hike up the trail. At 2:30 I realized we were getting close and that my Daughter had fallen back. So I stopped and waited for her. I then looked Up the steep hillside and noticed a tan object and thought to myself that it was the color of an elk. I looked down the trail at my daughter and then glanced in the area where the tan spot was and realized the tan spot was gone. So I began to glass the area and to my surprise that tan spot was the bull we were after. He had moved a quarter of a mile to the west and was feeding. I then advised my daughter that I had spotted the bull and she ran to my location showing no signs of being tired. The shot was basically straight up with a shooting lane of only two feet by two feet. The angle was so steep that she was not able to sit or use her shooting sticks. So I located a tree branch that was about seven feet long, grabbed it about three quarters of the was up and had her rest the rifle on my fist. Her first shot hit him behind the shoulder. The bull hunched up and began to move up the mountain side. I then told her to shoot him in the neck so to try and stop him in his track. Boom, and the bull drops. He then begans to roll down hill and with every roll his rack hits harder and harder. All I can think is that after all this hard work this bull is going to busted to pieces. The bull ended up getting his left side legs wedged under a downed aspen and stopped rolling. It took us two full days to get my father and daughter's bulls out piece by piece but It was a hunt that we will never forget. My Daughter is 18 now and has grown up to be a beautiful young woman who still loves to hunt! Time flies by fast enjoy every second that you have with your children because it does'nt last forever!!!!

This is My boys third coues deer and by far his best. Opening morning two days before his thirteenth birthday. His birthday is during the second week of November, so you can guess which hunts we put in for. We watched this buck for over 40 minutes before he took the shot. 385 yards from the prone position, one shot from his .270 and his hunt was over. One heck of a birthday gift.

Here are some sheds my boys and I found in June. We went out five times and had good luck. The last pic is of me and my future huntress!

As far as the rut goes it would be better to wait for the second week. However, living here in the White Mountains I have seen just as many monster bulls taking in the first week as in the last. It all boils down to you doing your home work, hunting hard and being persistant. If you find that bull you are looking for it is better to get on him as soon as possible rather than waiting and having some one bump him in to the next county! Or worse, in to their pick-up bed!!!

Awesome bull! I'd score him a shooter.

It all started when my daughter and I found out we both drew elk tags for the same hunt even though I put us on seperate applications. This was the last of our 2009 hunts and the preious hunts ended with great results. This would be my dauhgters second elk hunt at 17 years of age (she scored on a huge 6x6 when she was thirteen). Due to school her hunting days were limited. So the first decent 5x5 we located was toast. I decided to hold out for a monster or something unique(I also have a huge 6x6 on the wall). It was either of the two or go home empty handed. I was able to connect on a very large 5x5 that I considered to be unique due to it's size. We were accompanied by my Father, brothers, nephews and very good friends. Oh yeah and my daughters boyfriendwho also had a tag for the area and connected on a 6x7. I almost forgot about him It was an awesome hunt filled with alot of emotions, long range shots (373yrds and 465yrds one shot each). My son asked us to use his .270 which we did. That .270 made a believer out of me, I'm used to using my 7mm and my daughter uses a 30-06. That Barnes triple schock ammo is awesome! We also had a comical moment when my 8 year old boy treed himself after having a bear walk up on him and my thirteen year old boy while they were glassing. We had some unbelievable luck in 2009 and if we never have that type of luck again I won't be dissapointed!

Unit 27 Oct. for me. Looks like another pack in hunt! -
This hunt took place in October of 2008. It was a pack in hunt that we had planned for awhile. My friend Oscar and I decided we would pack in for several days and take our boys along for their first pack in. A half our into opening morning I was glassing down a finger that my boy and I had spotted several deer on, when my boy started glassing a finger directly to our left. He spotted several deer and directed me to where he had last seen them. As I started to glass the area I noticed a buck that had decent mass and was fairly tall. The buck then decided to bed down and put a large bush between him and us while I was trying to size him up. I continued to glass the area and noticed three more bucks. One of the bucks was wide with a non-typical antler growing from the base of the left main beam. We glassed him for about an hour before he also decided to bed down. My boy then asked if I was going to shoot him. I told him that I wanted a better look at the other buck before I made my decision. About three hours later the first buck stood up to change positions and I was able get a better look at him and noticed that he was a tall 4x4 with decent mass(excluding the eye gaurds). Even though the second buck(who was bedded 75yrds away)had a non-typical point and was fairly wide, I decided to take the first book due him being the dominant buck and I love deer with tall racks. One 260 yard shot form my .243 and my hunt was over. My boy was very excited and wanted to get a little loud. I then advised him that the second deer did not move from his bed and to stay quiet. The second buck was sound asleep. So I asked my boy if he would stay and glass the buck while I went back to our spike camp to get Oscar. Our spike camp was only 20min. away. I thought he would be a little hesitant being only ten years old at the time. I thought wrong! He said yes and asked me to leave him the rifle. So off I went doing double time trying to cut the time in half. Well to make a long story short Oscar was not at our spike camp and two and a half hours later we were back with my boy. My boy stated that the buck had moved to a different bush and due to multiple trees in the way he could not find him. We then began to glass the last area my boy had noticed him in and were able to locate him. Oscar made a great shot and we were finished opening day at 1:15pm. As we walked up to Oscar's buck we were all exited due to the non-typical point and this being Oscar's first coues deer and a great one at that! This was another great hunt that we were blessed with and one we will never forget!!!

Well I was fortunate enough to draw a late 12aw tag but due to having alot of fortune that year my hunting days were limited. I had also drawn an elk tag which began the following Friday. I passed on a total of 32 bucks, which drove my boys crazy! I let them know that the deer Gods would be good to us for being patient. We were down to our last morning, when our patients payed off. My boys and nephews had a great time squirrel hunting.
