Realization of how lucky we are all.

my wife has medical problems, when it was first diagnosed and she spent lots of time at the hospital she would feel sorry for herself - until she saw little kids that had just barely started living coming in for treatment, that changed her attitude. No matter what we face, at least we have spent some time on this earth, seeing a baby, or a kid that is 3 to 5 fighting for life puts a different slant on things. -
waterproof your boots with bacon grease, it might help....... or better yet take your friend along and waterproof his boots.......

I try to park about 1/4 mile from where I sit, strip down and put my scent-lok on when I park the truck and wear it just for the short walk to & from the blind.

takes a couple weeks for them to get used to a blind, move it and you start that period all over again. A blind is where I wear my scent lok gear, it helps

Legal But Not Ethical - hunting with a .25acp, it's a centerfire round so it is legal Ethical But Not Legal - putting a wounded doe out of her misery because some pinhead gutshot her These are a couple examples I give in my classes when we cover Hunter Responsibility and Ethics. Can't force them on people, just hope you get them started on the right track. I've noticed that respect seems to be the key, if you have respect for the animals you are hunting you tend to do what is necessary to ensure you take them cleanly. Have run into quite a few people that don't respect themselves let alone others and game. Would like to put a knot on their head and bend their rifle barrel around a tree.

That is exactly why those tags are put out. The Hopi's own quite a bit of ground there and these tags keep it open for the rest of us.

I have 3 BAR MK II's with the BOSS in the safe and highly recommend them, my youngest daughter used to shoot my .300wm with a 180 gr rd when she was 12. The combo of the semi-auto action and BOSS take the bulk of the recoil out, I usually get to see the game react to the bullet in the scope. Why don't you step up to a .30 since the recoil will be less, but I have to admit my first one was .270win, pretty partial to that round. Have no idea what they cost now.

It's not just guns. I have run into people in the woods with borrowed bows, brand new equipment that their "Buddy" put together for them, 2 to 3 days practice, I could go on. Lots of folks like to hunt but not all of them put in the practice to be even marginally proficient with their equipment. What are you going to do but shake your head and mumble as you walk away - just as well try to teach your dog to play the piano as waste breath trying to teach respect and ethics to them.

I agree that record books have not been beneficial to hunting in the last 20 years, changed the name of the game to size only - even with beginning hunters who should just want to learn not get to the top of the hill right out of the chute. I know I have several friends that feel like me - I would send a pic or two out to a few people of a record book animal but could care less if my name was ever put in a book. Growing up meat was the name of the game, and if the meat had a big rack on it great, but the rack was not the whole point of the hunt.

Depending on what I have going on I would like to come down and help out if I can, won't know for sure until date gets closer.

here are a couple of my recipes. A quick, no-brainer chili 1 can Rotel Chili Fixins 1 can black beans 1 can kidney beans 1/2 to 1 lb meat peppers - I carry dried jalapeno's & chiletipenes 1/2 onion diced brown the meat, onions, dump in the canned stuff and peppers, simmer a while dumping in a blast of beer as needed for liquid - best is when about a can of beer has been dumped in over a couple hours while lies are being swapped. I usually bake up some Marie Calendar cornbread to go with this. Or a pork tenderloin, 1 can Rotel Chili Fixin's and 1 can of water, cook under pressure for 20 mins and you have shredded taco/burro meat. 6 quail, 1 to 2 cups rice (depends on how many people), chicken bullion, water and a big blast of orange juice. I've made this one in both the pressure cooker and the Outback Oven, takes longer in the oven.

Great bucks! I'm sure I'll draw flack from the cola blanca crowd but in my mind desert mule deer are harder to hunt than little friggin elf deer.
-
dontcha know you are supposed to put newbies & NR's on dink deer to begin with, then they work up.......... nice bucks.......and Az is nothing like the flat ground of the mid-west, have a couple of Wis boys showing up in 3 days for desert mule deer - hope they remember their Carhartts and leather gloves.
