Spend $25 and buy a hard case at Walmart and keep your tackle box. I use the plastic containers for game calls, fireline meds, my archery gear. Lots of uses for those plastic boxes that let you adjust the size of the slots.

I have friends from Wis that will come out and buy an archery tag in Jan and come back in Dec if they don't fill it.

I am constantly scanning when I glass, a couple passes over terrain and you get to recognize things, then you notice changes or movement on subsequent passes. I say there are 3 P's for glassing, Patience, Persistance and the most import PADDING - it has direct impact on the first 2.

Check safe stores, when I got mine it was a "last year's model" and saved just shy of $500 on it. Don't skimp, the cost of good safe is about the same as a rifle with real good glass, bet they would get more that one rifle if someone robbed you. I have to thank my wife for mine, she said I could not buy another gun until I bought a safe, we had no room left under the beds.

You will starve to death if you plan on living on your guide money, unless you start an outfitting business and have several quality guides working for you. The outfitter side is where the red tape really begins, insurance, permits, hiring people and getting gear. If you just want to make enough to cover your guide license, buy some gear and write it off, get to go on hunts and learn some country and meet some good people then you should be happy. I have worked for a couple different outfitters, I show up with my optics, knives and bedroll. I like it that way. Never get rich but I get to go hunting every year, especially this year where I didn't draw a single tag.

When I scout I am up and down multiple hills seeing what they offer for glassing and overall views of the terrain. Come hunting time I will hit what I feel is the best one and may stay there all day. Hunting pressure also has an impact, been beat to my Plan A glassing spot more that once, that's why you have Plans B, C, etc. I tend to hunt closer to the pressure (other hunters) on the first day or two, get high and use the other hunters as beaters, they will kick out a lot of deer and not even know they did it. As the season progresses and the deer head to the inaccessible (no roads) parts of the unit I move that way.

Used several different ways to add suet, pork or beef, to game for burger or sausage, have had the butcher at Albertson's save if for me, bribed him with a pack of elk sausage, I have hit Costco on Sunday's, they have ground pork that I have added to game to make sausage, either 70/30 or 50/50 game to pork, or bought a fatty pork butt and ground it up. Have ground up game with 70/30 burger or as pointed out 1 lb bacon to 3 lbs game. Lot of different ways to do it, nowadays I add pork to make sausage and just grind up game for burger.

I'll grind up my burger fresh on occasion, a couple of game steaks, handful of bacon strips, maybe a green chile or pepper, grind them all together and make a good burger.

However far I can see them at. The more you glass the better you will get at distances, sometimes you may see an ear flick or just the straight, symetrical line of the back or a leg or look through bushes to see something moving behind them. Glassing is a skill, the more you use it the better it will be.

I have eyeballed the Ruger in a couple of magazines and have thought about adding one to my safe. But I also found a Series 80 Colt Commander at a pawn shop that has been there a while, the longer they sit the more haggling room there is. Hopefully some of you can educate me, I haven't been around a 1911 since I got out of the Corps more years ago than I want to own up to. Any issues with an 80? I'm leaning towards a smaller 1911 to carry on my scouting/hunting packs, I have enough weight as it is so smaller is better for me.

Will be picking up the Garmin Oregon 450T tomorrow. A couple of SD cards and you are set, I already have the AZ/NM 1-24,000 card. I run into these quite a bit on wildland fires, the maps are real nice when you are in strange country for the first time. I believe they come stock with the western states 1-250,000 maps. Used at $99 Etrex for many years, hope I can get the 11+ years of hunting info off of it and into my new one easy.

How many people and for how long? I'm an okay hand with a frying pan and dutch oven, nothing fancy, just filling. So far I have no guide gigs for archery elk, at least cooking would get me out of town.

Was just reading in either G&A or Shooting Times that Hornady teamed up with Hogdon and are producing the powder used for factory Leverevolution loads, should be easy to come up with loads that match the factory using it.

Big deer tend to bed in the flats, they will feed in the foothills at night and head out to bed early am. Get high where you can glass the NE face of hills and trees, think shade.
