nice job TJ. I understand about the knee, my feels great now - that because I got it worked on in Sep, it was so bad I had to turn down a couple fires at the end of the season, I couldn't hump my pack.

Taking Photos of Your Coues Buck

a short chunk of monofilament line works to tie a mouth closed if necessary -
Sunflower Valley.....and hook up with the kids camp, it used to stage at the N end of the valley. You can take your son out and learn some of the country and habits, then go back when your tag is good. G&F should be able to tell you when/where the camp is.

I know a couple people that drew the tag on their first try with no points. It's like any other draw......somebody is po'd when it is over.

Ballistically they are equal out to about 400 yds, then the WSM starts dropping a little more.

With a "new baby" budget look at Vortex Vipers 15x50's, they are great glass for the money - around $600 depending on where you get them, saw them on sale a while back for around $400 but don't remember where.

I like Gold Tip XT Hunters, good arrow that won't break your wallet.

If you don't have tripod mounted optics you need some, even if it is just putting your 8's or 10's on a tripod, you will see more game. I hunt by myself a lot, just start taking the long cut. Plus I'm getting a bit long in the tooth and while I can remember when I could scramble around like a billy goat those days are past. I'll walk a mile out of my way to take an easier route. I give my wife a general area to start looking, if I move I call her and give her the new spot (if I remember, the age thing again). Hunting accidents are very low in Az, as a result blaze orange isn't mandatory. It just takes a little time to get used to hunting in Az. I grew up in Wy and we lived on wild game, but we pretty much just drove around and killed stuff, didn't have to work very hard at it. Here in Az I had to learn how to hunt, Wy mule deer and Az mule deer are completely different in habits, coues habits are closer to Wy mule deer. When you have free time go scout, the more you watch the game the better you will understand it and learning the terrain will only help.

I picked up a case in a swap a few years back for the spotting scope & tripod, gave the tripod away but still have the case. Where do you live? I'm in the NW valley, Glendale. You could look it over and see if you want it. It has a protected pocket for the spotting scope and a flap that covers the tripod. As of now it doesn't attach to a pack, it has it's own carry strap, haven't looked to see if it can be attached to a pack. I was after the tripod for a friend, the case was just extra.

I agree, he's been dead a while. My WAG is wounded by a hunter, lots of times the muzzle is crushed in a lion kill.

deer and cattle eat different things, elk and cattle are grazers, predominantly grass, deer are browsers, more shrubs and brush altho it it seems Az cows will eat darn near anything, a Wy cow would starve to death in Az.

I carry a pad, for a long time carried a $5 fleece blanket to sit on, now I use it to keep warm while I sit on my pad.

You need a 10" butcher knife for steaks, flexible bladed and stiff bladed boning knives and a grinder and you can do everything yourself. I've used hand crank grinders, counter top models and now have a big one. I use my garage fridge to age now but have killed something one day and put it in paper in the field the next, I would just let the steaks age when thawed by taking them out 3 to 5 days before I wanted to cook them. I have a Seal-A-Meal and age my game in the garage fridge before butchering, but it was real nice to take paper in the field and do all the butchering there, just fling the stuff over your shoulders and feed the coyotes/crows and when I got home I loaded the freezer and only had the grind to worry about. Pillow cases from yard sales make excellent game bags if you do the gutless method, then the garbage bag keeps your pack from getting bloody. If I can, weather permitting, I let my qtrs hang uncovered at night so the rind up, then cut the rind off taking any hair or dirt with it, you don't lose much meat with a sharp knife and it beats picking hairs. I'm pretty anal about my meat care, throw an ounce of questionable away rather than chance tainting a lb of good meat.
