California SB1221
azslim replied to bonuspointjohn's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Yep, but that is about 10% of the population, and 10% of us believe in hunting as a conservation tool, it's they 80% in the middle that vote with their hearts based on a 30 second commercial that we need to swing to our side. -
California SB1221
azslim replied to bonuspointjohn's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
It would be hard to capture, but I have thought if a video could be made of a coyote taking down a helpless fawn, and a pack of wolves devouring a cow elk in labor with a calf and show it to the public a few minds might be changed about these walking stomachs. The anti's had no problem showing puppies in leg hold traps when that issue came up for a vote. -
Practice with the broadheads you plan on hunting with, number them so you can tell them apart, put your best fliers in the quiver where you will grab them first, sharpen them up after practice and go put your tag on an elk.

Online draw system fails AGAIN!
azslim replied to Gr8 White Jr's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
procrastinators pay dearly, that'll learn ya to put it off to the last minute worked fine for me last week, but it only had a couple users not a couple thousand all trying to do the same thing at the same time used to work the deadline at AZGFD when it was on Greenway, was surprised at how many waited until the last minute, sent their wives, friends, parents, inlaws, etc to drop off apps and were plumb indignant when they missed the 7:00 pm deadline despite having 6+ weeks to get their apps in good luck folks, hope you get in for the draw and get the tag you want -
the continues to grow, as it does the ears move down on the sides and farther apart, if you see a bear that looks like Alfred E. Newman then you best shoot him........

Grilled Elk Tenderloin
azslim replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
tenderloins seldom make it home, I usually cook them for breakfast the next morning with OE eggs and hashbrowns. I do have a few chunks of backstrap stashed from deer, been skunked on elk tags lately. -
flowers, chocolate and jewelry..........good luck

find out if they are the new HD's or the old model, should be able to get the old model for under $500. And Vortex will honor their lifetime warranty on 2nd hands I have been told.

Vortex Viper 15x50's will run you $650 to $700 depending on where you get them. They are great glass for the money. I prefer the Outdoorsman's bayonet stud mount over the the Vortex, but it costs over twice as much. Their 15x56 Kaibab's are great also, they'll give Swaro's and the like a run for their money at half the cost, $1300ish.

buy some good bino's and mount them on a tripod, most of us like 15x56's, climb on top of a mountain and use your glass

Gila Wilderness Fire, smoke plume seen from the house
azslim replied to ScottAdams's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
that's cooking....... -
I've cooked steaks and roasts, made breakfast sausage and burger out of lion, used it in a Chicken and Apple sausage recipe and it was a waste of time and meat, edible but not near as good as chicken or turkey.

Ban "TOXIC LEAD AMMUNITION" in the Kaibab
azslim replied to azmetalman's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
have mixed emotions about this one, my daughters volunteered at Adobe Mtn Wildlife Rehab for their HS years and had a bunch of hawks, owls & eagles with lead poisoning, they vomit and puke green, so it isn't junk science made up to cram a law down our throats. Don't really like it, have my reloads all set for lead/jacketed rds and haven't tried any of the new non-lead offerings. So this is a case where I don't like it but they ain't lying, don't know that there is a happy medium. It's neat to have a Condor fly over your head at about 10 ft, wish I'd had a camera. -

Swarovski 12X50 EL Binocular
azslim replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
find something to lean against and don't tank up on coffee for hand-held use -
last year on the Pacheco fire we camped in Borriego Canyon, one night the Div Sup felt eyes on her, she opened hers and was face to face with a black bear, she screamed and the bear hauled butt. Next night she slept in the middle of the group not on the edge by the trail. One of the Pleasant Valley Shots had an encounter with a bear on the Horseshoe II, felt someone tugging on the end of his sleeping bag, thought it was a crew member so he swatted at him, the bear swatted him back and rolled him down the hill.

Horse packing ruled illegal in wilderness areas
azslim replied to DesertBull's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
