Glad you are looking forward to it, family is important, nothing else matters. Personally, I'll rob Circle K's before I move east of the Mississippi

MRL, not if it keeps some of the younger readers from making a mistake, that's what us old folks do, share a little of our experience, don't want to take it, we don't care, learn the hard way

My youngest daughter came to me with a check sent to her, I instinctively knew it was some type of scam, they were wanting something back from her, don't remember what. I said the way you deal with stuff like this is take the check to the Credit Union and have them see if the check is for real. Only after it is verified should you follow any of the instructions that came with it. I got the Thanks Dad a couple days later. If it's too good to be true it probably isn't. Same deal on her looking for a truck for her husband, guy was selling his in Mt because he was getting deployed. Told her if you can't put your hands on it, drive it, leave your money in your pocket and keep looking.

TJ, take a weed sprayer you've only put water in, works great to rinse hands, wash of dishes, etc. and for carcasses add some ice to cool the water down and you can pressure wash it, granted not much pressure but enough for the big chunks

I used to butcher on my tailgate, tip something over today and put it in paper tomorrow. Go home with wrapped packages of meat and put them in the freezer. Was nice to just fling stuff over your shoulder to feed the coyotes and crows. Would thaw it out gracefully, like you, let it sit in the fridge for 3 or 5 days before cooking, letting as much blood as possible drain out. Worked great for me. Now with the fridge I have left things in it for a month before I took it apart, just check the temp every day. Makes for some tasty steaks. I am anal about my meat care, throw away an ounce of questionable meat rather than chance a pound of good meat going bad. The big thing is get it cooled as soon as you can. Frozen water bottles are the best thing I have found for the meat cooler, put down a layer, stack in the qtrs then shove bottles wherever they will fit. I never open my meat cooler until I have something to put in it, keep your food and beer in their own cooler.

Have You Had Enough Yet?
azslim replied to Alpinebullwinkle's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I'm plumb sick and tired of both parties. So fricken busy try to get their side, their agenda, their wild a$s ideas in place they forgot who they work for. They are supposed to being helping us, their bosses, not pushing forward an ideology that only helps their ego. They are both so busy with their playbooks they forgot the goal of the game. Fire them all and start over, get a plumber, a carpenter, a burger flipper, someone that has walked in our shoes, lived paycheck to paycheck, sweated paying all the bills. If we get people like that in office maybe we can get something done. The bulk of our politicians are rich and never worked a hard day in their life. And when they get their office they focus on lining their pockets and the pockets of their big contributors. I'd like to see a couple of amendments: 1. No lifetime politicians, 2 terms and you are out. 2. No laws passed that Congress is exempt from, if it is good for us it is good for them. See Obamacare, their one term lifetime retirement packages, insider trading exemptions. -
Which rifle for a youth hunter?
azslim replied to SteveKDC's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
just make sure the rifle fits them, take them with you when you buy it. Have them pick a spot on the wall, close their eyes and mount the rifle. When they open their eyes they should be able to see edge to edge in the scope and have everything feel right to just squeeze the trigger. You can fudge with the scope a little to correct the eye relief, but properly set up you shouldn't have to. They will be able to shoot a rifle that fits much better than one where they have to lift their head a touch, or inch forward or back, to get set, and recoil won't be as much of an issue. I put a cheek pad on the rifle I bought when I started my daughters out, raised the comb just enough for them, and didn't get in the way for me. -
if you want to hang meat it should be in temps no higher than 40 degrees, the gamey flavor you will hear people complain about is actually the meat going bad. I have hung meat and night and coolered it up during the day with no problem. I have on old fridge on my back porch I age stuff in now, works good.

9 year old accidentaly shot - hope it wasn't a CWT's family member
azslim replied to PRDATR's topic in The Campfire
copy that, old habit AD's, have to agree with ND's, all I was around could have been avoided -
depends on where I drop it and how far it is to camp/rig, doesn't matter if it's pig, deer or elk. My goal is to get the hide off and start it cooling as soon as possible, been using pillow cases for that chore, keeps the meat clean, let's it breathe and are cheap at yard sales. Sometimes it's gutless, sometimes clean and skin, then the meat is put in a cooler full of frozen 16 oz water bottles. Don't be putting your meat in ziplocks or garbage bags, keeps the heat in and makes it sweat, save that for when it is cooled down back at camp.

Obamacare: A real story
azslim replied to PackerMenges's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
didn't want to hear that, have a knee that needs swapped out but not yet, and 60 ain't that far off -
glad it was boars for you. Can't say with 100% certainy, just been told by a couple biologists, javelina are very social and will adopt orphans. Pretty sure it will work for weaned pigs but not for one still on the boob. Adobe Mtn Wildlife Rehab has had a few little red's, my daughters got to bottle feed them till they were farmed out elsewhere.

Been around about 8 AD's (accidental discharge) over the years, couple came pretty close to my foot or leg, have my head on swivel (if I can) and make sure chambers are empty when I have new hunters with me. A couple of guys over the years have earned the right to pack their guns how they want with me, usually it's with an empty chamber. If it makes them mad so what, I'm helping you you're not helping me, I'll pack my trash and go home. -
can't tell if that is a growth, wound, wart on her nose or she is licking snot

actually they don't want you to eat the tag, meats just fine.......

Had a cousin in Montana, Col in the Hiway Patrol, did 3 tours as a Green Beret in Vietnam, killed himself pulling a shotgun through a fence. One moment of inattention is all it takes. -
