    Scouting

I would study maps in my living room to plan making the most out of my gas, you can cover a lot of terrain on a weekend and if you find an area that you like give it two weekends. You will be surprised how much you can learn from 4 to 6 weekends during the summer, pack light and be mobile, put up a cot at the tailgate at night and break it down in the morning, head up on the occasional Fri night so you're ready to go Sat.

    Scouting

this time of the year I'll scout roads, water and trails just to familiarize myself with the unit if it's new to me or expand my knowledge of one I've hunted and I never spend the night in the same place twice, hit the high points to glass daybreak and evenings, then drive and walk terrain during the day

    Badlands Superday pack

I use mine when I'm scouting or out for a day traveling country and don't need to carry a lot, switch to a frame pack come hunting season. They are nice packs.

    fossil creek backpack trip?

there was a parking lot at the top of the canyon before you started dropping down, park there and follow the old jeep trail down. have done Hellsgate too, a must to be able to water proof your packs because fastest way is to go through the deep holes, had a ball fishing my way down the creek, ran into 4 bears, one mama with a cub, keep that in mind

    New to Coues / AZ

if you are planning a backpack hunt you need to be positive there is water around to filter, otherwise plan on a couple of trips humping in water before you hump in your camp, or head to the truck and resupply every couple days. Don't count on water sources flowing until you have seen it with your own eyes.
  7. the end justifies the means for these folks, as far as I am concerned they foment scenarios like Baltimore for the increase in violence to justify them shoving more gun laws down our throats, it's not the elite of the gun grabbers that face the bullets, they are more than willing to let someone they don't know die so they can get their way

I want to reload, I need advice....

I load my pistol rds with a single stage Rock Chucker, weigh every 5th charge just for peace of mind. I'm not a competitive pistol shooter so no need for many thousands of rds. I do mine in stages, clean one night, de-prime and size another evening, I use a Lee hand primer and will prime up a bunch while watching tv, then when I'm ready fill with powder and put the lids on. I'll do a couple hundred at a time. I load .357mag, 40s&w, 44mag and 45acp. I also reload about 15 different rifle calibers, from 220swift to 45-70. Nice being able to work up a load that your rifle likes, buy a new caliber rifle and pick up dies & brass at the same time. You can get a lot of life out of brass if you don't hot-rod your rounds. I like the hand primer because you feel when the pockets get too big and the primers almost fall in, then I'll pinch the brass with a pair of pliers and throw it away.

Sausage Fest and Meat Grinder Review

you can get hog casings from Demark Sausage Co in Phx, address is 7712 W. Golden, if you don't use them all up (hard to do because you get a big batch) store them in a ziplock in a salt brine, I make my brine with kosher salt pick up a can of food grade silicone for keeping rust at bay while stored, I got mine from Cabela's Bruce Aidell's Complete Sausage Book has the best recipes I have run across, I have 5 other books but I always go back to this one Sprout's & Winco have bulk spices, you can also order online from Penzey's, these are the freshest, supposed to be a store in Scottsdale but I haven't visited it
  18. I backpacked from Bear Flats to Gisela in the early 90's, steep rugged country, in 5 days we ran into 3 bears, good fishing, didn't get far enough out of the creek bed to comment on the deer but should be good. If you go along the creek you need to waterproof your pack and be ready to swim.

    Smoked quail

a brine I like with fish and birds is 1/4 cup brown sugar and 2 Tblspns kosher salt, then a little minced garlic and minced onion, enough water to cover, usually about 2 cups, brine overnight then smoke however long is necessary. This is for smaller batches, adjust as necessary if you are doing bigger batches.
  20. I have a wool shirt, jacket and rain gear, they make good gear. I emailed them suggesting they come out with some Az pants, they should be double fronted, like Carhartt's, and also double seated because our rocks are all mean, just like our bushes. I have a hard time dropping big bucks for new gear, I think this stuff was worth it.

Which GPS would you buy and why

I have a Garmin Oregon 450T, I like it because it came pre-loaded with maps of the US, I travel quite a bit during the summer on wildland fires and if the dirt roads have numbers they are usually on my GPS no matter what state I am in. It is fairly user friendly, altho I hate the "delete all waypoints" button but that is due to my fat fingers and not putting on my glasses. There are a lot to choose from and mine is several years old but I can't stress enough how nice it is to have maps of the entire US.
  25. I bought a bunch of stuff from BigMoqui a couple years ago, it is great jewelry at a killer price, I dropped way more than intended but knowing a little about silver & turquoise what he has is selling at a price that can't be beat, especially nowadays you will be getting it cheaper than if you bought it from the artist as the prices are from several years ago.
